Toshiba Blu-ray players and laptops to release soon

By: Jamie Pert | August 10, 2009 | Leave a Comment

We recently heard how Toshiba had ‘bit the bullet’ and decided to start releasing Blu-ray players, despite initially firmly backing the HD DVD format. It is now official as Toshiba have now applied for membership of the BDA.

The BDA is the Blu-ray Disc Association, this shows that Toshiba plan on releasing products that support the Blu-ray format. Toshiba did not mention any products that they plan on releasing nor did they mention any dates that we should expect to see them, they did however release the following press release:

“In light of recent growth in digital devices supporting the Blu-ray format, combined with market demand from consumers and retailers alike, Toshiba has decided to join the BDA. Toshiba aims to introduce digital products that support the Blu-ray format, including BD players and notebook PCs integrating BD drives, in the course of this year. Details of the products, including the timing of regional launches, are now under consideration. We will make announcements in due course.”

I would imagine that we will start seeing affordable Blu-ray players manufactured by Toshiba ahead of the holiday season, as we hear more details we will keep you informed.
