Cash for Clunkers Program: Charities Worried

By: Peter Chubb | August 10, 2009 | Leave a Comment

Since the launch of the Clash for Clunkers program, there have been a number of people criticizing the incentive. According to USA Today, the latest is a number of charities across the United States who are worried that people are now trading in their old cars to get the cash incentive, rather than donate them to a charity.

Kidney Cars program director, Chad Iseman has said that they have seen a dramatic impact on the amount of cars that are being given to them, saying that he expects at least a 10 to 15 percent decline since the launch of the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS).

Kidney Cars along with a number of other charities in the U.S. met with Congress in April to express their concerns with the program. The Cash for Clunkers Program proved so popular that it ran out of money in just a few short days.

The $1 billion that had been put aside was meant to last up until November; the US Senate has now made another $2 billion available to the program.
