Zone 40 Wireless Gaming: Alternative to Nintendo Wii

Zone 40 Wireless Gaming: Alternative to Nintendo Wii

By: Daniel Chubb | August 9, 2009 | 107 Comments

If you can afford both the Nintendo Wii and the price of the games, then you will not find a better games console for you in today’s market, but if you find the price of games high then we have an alternative for you.

This is the Zone 40 wireless gaming console, which looks like the Wii but is much more focused on those that like budget gaming. The mini console includes 40 built-in games – hence the name – and comes with controllers.

Currently the Zone 40 is mostly sold in the UK, and designed for 2 players aged 8 years and over. So remember this Christmas, the Zone 40 will give “fun for the entire family” at a much lower price (around £25/$40).

it maybe a good thing for families that can’t afford the games and a good gaming system for their kids especially with the economy. Atleast these kids will have something and not feel like they have nothing when the other kids do. obviously you didn’t grow up in a family that struggled!! If you have such a problem and have money why don’t you find struggling families that parents lost their jobs and donate a system to them!your the people that don;t give 2 craps about people and their hard ships. So why don;t you get off your F’N high horse and do something constructive!!! All I see is a looser and it’s really actually funny!

    Hi,
Got one of these for my son, cannot get him of the thing now, very cheaply priced and excellent value. It does not come with an mains adapter which is the problem, but Maplin sell compatable ones at £5, I managed to get a free one at busyuk.co.uk :)

    Regards
    Sean

you guys are dumb… at the end of the day you have coke and pepsi… it is what it is.. their both cola…zone 40 and wii are both just gaming systems…and for 40 bucks who cares! its all for fun anyway..I own a wii its cool, but i think the zone 40 is alright to!

  • Suzette

very, very, well said. Thanks for going to bat for the rest of us. I am here because thinking of getting this console for my family for Christmas, they wanted a wii but WE can`t aford it this year in the mean time I thought this would at least do them untill next Christmas in hopes that the economy will be better. If so we will donate this system to another Family. question though, what games are are built into the system ?

  • scmom

The reason Wii’s are so expensive in the first place is because people like you buy them and think there should be no competition to bring the price down. This is AMerica… it used to mean free to be competitive. But big corporations bought out everyone; choice is disappearing. Is that what you want?

  • K. C.

    Dear Lauren,

You are a high quality, number 1, grade A+ jack ass. I say this for a few reasons. 1) Not everybody cares that much about “gaming systems” like you seem to. It is a game…who cares. It keeps me, the wife, and the kids occupied for a few hours when it is raining outside, or whatever the reason may be. Nobody needs to be on these stupid games very long in the first place.
    2) Nobody is bringing a lawsuit you know-nothing-piece of crap. There are no viable basis for lawsuits here. This has been happening for the past, well, forever. Somebody invents something, or has an idea on how to improve something and come out with a new product. Then people say “WOW! I like this!” and others duplicate it. Just take your precious Nintendo. Atari had a game that involved a joystick, then someone invented a hand held control with buttons…no not nintendo…Magnavox! Nintendo didn’t have this until over 10 years later.
    3) Not everyone can have their daddy buy crap for them. Some of us actually have to work for money. Some of us harder than others. I have a feeling you are either one of the daddies girls (who get everything ever) or one of the others. Either way you are a jackass, so just shut the hell up you snot-nosed brat and let people be happy. Thank you.

    K. C.

There is a cool video review of it, although the reviewer doesn’t seem to like it, some of the darn games look good (especially the sword master game where you kill zombies) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4V5Y2MYF1QQ

  • Thomas

You don’t need 3 Wiis for 3 kids. You have it hooked up in the TV room so anyone can play. 1 Wii is not expensive.

  • Sara

I did a lot of web searching for information and reviews on the Zone 40. Originally we saw the first version of this that only comes with like 7 games and is a much more ‘cheap’ feeling version for $40. Good thing we didn’t buy that one, because upon research we found out about this Zone 40 version that has 40 games.

I understand why some people might say this console is not worth the buy, but being one that doesn’t just have $199.99 on hand for a normal Wii (not to mention Wii games costs anywhere from around $19.99 to $49.99 a PIECE) I think this was a decent way to experience Wii-like games and movements.

I’m going to just take a stab in the dark and say that since this is a cheaply made gaming system, some people complaining of glitches may just have a faulty device. We bought ours from CVS which you can return items for full refunds to. We figured if this device was glitchy and awful we’d just get our money back.

Surprisingly enough we had quite a bit of fun playing all the 2 player interactive games and there are even a few 2 player arcade games as well. Also to top that off, there are a few of those arcade games that are interactive as well.

So yes this Wii knock off is not 100% interactive on all 40 games, but a good half of them do require controller movements. The graphics themselves don’t move as ‘smoothly’ as the Wii does, but I did find myself physically moving all the same as I did playing the Wii at friends house and demos at electronic stores. I still have to swing and swivel for it, it just kind of flows that way even if you don’t technically HAVE to do so for the sensor to sense your movements.

All in all if you are just wanting physically interactive fun with a Wii similarity, your $40 might not be so wasted. It does come with a full 40 games (and yes, like 5 are track games with different yard lines) but that still is like 35 games more than any Wii will come with. It keeps you entertained for a good while and fun for the family.

Downfalls? Only that there won’t be any way to get more games for this console (it will personally take me a while to get bored of 40 games anyway), only 2 player maximum and this did not come with an AC adapter but it works off batteries if you don’t have a universal adapter laying around (luckily I did). But at least it came with the ability to do that and not have to rely on batteries for it. It works without batteries if you have an adapter for it.

By the time I’m bored of al $40 games I’d honestly probably have my $40 worth anyway, and can try to find something else along the lines of this. You just have to go into it thinking that it’s not 100% modern technology, the graphics are a step back but you still get a decent Wii-like experience. I didn’t feel like I wasted my money.

And my device did not have any glitches, everything worked perfectly!

  • Sara

Oh and one last note to my review as if I haven’t said enough, the majority if not all of the ‘arcade’ games are knock offs of old Atari and Arcade games. I personally found this a bit fun to go back to the past and play games I haven’t gotten to play since I was younger, and not to mention the few racing and fighting games. You can’t really complain about it. It’s $40 which is really cheap, so you get cheap with it. But if you’re in the same position as me (not a lot of money to spend on expensive gaming) you appreciate things like this. Even if it is knock off versions of other games.

  • Throwmyself

The graphics for the Wii were a step back so this thing must be terrible. Didn’t waste my money on the Wii and found this thing to be pretty laughable. But, if I was a kid in Obamas economy I would take whatever I could get.

  • Howie Feltersnatch

You don’t have money for 3 Wiis, but you could buy 3 TVs to hook up three crappy games to? (Wait, how do you even have money to afford the care and feeding of 3 kids? Condoms cost like $0.50 each, tops, you know.) Your kids hate you, you know. They don’t tell you to your face, but they secretly hate you for buying really shoddy Chinese knockoff games. They’re also upset by you buying them “FroutLoups Cereal” for breakfast, along with “malk” to pour on them. And they really hate their Addydas shoes with the soles that keep peeling off. Also, you’re not doing yourself any favours with that “Rollex” watch your wearing that’s always 5 minutes slow.

  • Tai

Quite frankly, I\’m really glad there\’s an alternate to the so called \” game console\” out there. Yes, it\’s not as savy and detailed as the modern overpriced consoles, but least it gives you an opportunity to have fun at a minimum cost. All that glitter are not gold, price a factor? maybe, but sheer access to games at little cost or none is quite a good market strategy and must be applaud rather than lampoonated! it\’s portability and power source options should be a thing of reflection for other console makers. All in all, not bad for the price and should not be compared to higher resolute games consoles. If you have one enjoy it for what it is.

  • Chrissy

What games are acutally on this system?

  • Heather

I don’t understand why everyone is fighting about this. Its just weird. As far as infringement is concerned, this is a plug and play game. It has limitations far below a Wii. Just because an article compares the cosmetic design to a Wii, does not mean the company threw a “Compare and Save” sticker on the box. With all the generic products out there, what are you so mad about? These are not even close in relation. Xbox 360′s stand up. too. I don’t see a cool steering wheel controller, etc. Chill out. Its a decent alternative for families. Just because someone cannot afford to buy a console that costs a couple hundred dollars and games for at least $50 a pop, does not mean they cannot afford to feed their family. These people have certain priorities and make certain sacrifices. There is an economic crisis in our world. It is not fair to make snide remarks to one another about money. Someone that was just on top of the world might be digging through the trenches now. Overall, I think its a wonderful idea to add wireless features to a plug and play game. I have seen this advertised in the United States in a CVS Pharmacy circular for $29.99. I will more than likely be picking one up for Christmas. I would just like to know what games are included.

  • shannon

How did THIS turn into a racial conversation? Some people only have one thing on thier mind……

  • north carolina

The amount of ignorance on this site scares and annoys me. I just saw this game in a sales paper and sought out reviews before going to purchase it for my sons. The price is great, whether it is as great as Nintendo system is besides the point. Who gives a fuck. All I want to know is if the system is worth buying period. Are the games great, is the quality decent? That’s all I want to know. The whole comparison to the Wii is besides the point. If I wanted to hear about the Wii, then I would have researched reviews on it instead. What I have read here is a bunch of racist comments, discriminations against social classes and pure ignorance. Are you all Americans? I mean truly, this is some sad shit that I have read. American or not, you all need to check yourselves. I’m ashamed to even be of the same species as any of you!

  • KB

There is no need to write all that extra garbage for a simple comment. If you do not like the game system that is okay. if you want to give people advise not to buy the system, that is good. but to go from that to “your children hate you, they don’t tell you to your face, but they hate you.” Common! be constructive, not destructive. With the economy, everybody is looking at their finances a little closer. No matter if one has money or no money. If the system is that crappy, then educate those of us that are not familiar with the system. Thanks that would be much more appreciated.

  • ddawn30

The control dont work to get to the games. And dont know how to play it .DOes anyone know howto play and hook up.

  • Kristen

    Wow!!!

I saw Zone 40 in the CVS flyer for $29.99 and was curious to what is was. So my husband told me to look up reviews on it…Wow…what is all this crap I’m reading??

My family has been fortunate over the years to have owed Nintendo, Nitendo 64, PlayStation, X-Box, Playstation II and X-Box 360…along with the Nintendo GameBoy and the PSP.
I have a husband that loves electronics and gaming so my son has been very fortunate. They play games like Madden, NASCAR and Call of Duty and they do the on-line thing. Graphics are very important to them. I have never really gotten into playing on any of those gaming systems…I dont have a clue how to use the controllers.

I grew up with Pong and then finaly got Atari (it was like I died and went to heaven).

I have played WII at a friends house and made up a character and bowled and had a really good time.

Unfortunately, no one in my family cares about the WII… so when I saw this Zone 40…I thought this might be something fun for me. SO I came on to see if it was any good…I know it’s cheap, but does it work?

If the answer is yes, it works and it’s fun!!!
    or No, I don’t recomend it because…
If someone could give the Pro’s and Con’s it would really help out a lot of people.

I think most people would appreciate that from someone who owns this system.

If it does work…This would definately be under my christmas tree to my son if he was young, due to… X-Boxes, PS3′s and WII are very tempermental for young children they don’t hold up well when they get knocked over or kicked from swinging feet games get scratched with a little bump to the console and then your out upto $60 for one game.

This is a great alternative for young children if someone could answer the main question at hand for people writing in…
“DOES THIS WORK AND WHAT GAMES COME IN IT”???

  • Howie Feltersnatch

Alright already. No, the game does not work. The games are all very, very lame ripoffs of other licensed games. The controls are not very responsive, the graphics are bad, and none of the games are fun to play more than once. Example: The Pac-Man ripoff has a mouse eating cheese in a maze, chased by cats. When you eat a “power cheese” you grow bigger and attack the cats, but can’t eat any more cheese. WTF? It’s like the thing was programmed by retards. You’ll want to play with the sound turned off, too, because most of the sound effects are annoying 8-bit loops.

This game isn’t worth $5. It doesn’t work well, the games suck, the instructions aren’t helpful, the graphics and sound are terrible, the quality is very poor, and it’s almost certainly illegal as it’s ripped off copyrighted content and isn’t properly licensed. Also note that it isn’t UL listed, and could potentially be a fire hazard, or harm your TV.

  • yallarestupid

Think about it..40 games comes built in. Does the wii have 40 built in games? Only wii sports come free with tennis, baseball, bowling, golf, and boxing. your looking at paying about 30-50 bucks a game. this is a great deal. Dont knock it, til you try it. I am a Nintendo lover myself. I still have my Super Nintendo with 30+ games. I’m willing to give the system a chance. It is only 40 bucks, if your complaining about 40 bucks and 40 games built in, than there is something seriously wrong with you. I own 5 systems. It keeps all my guests entertained, especially with my 3 47inch hd tv’s.

  • Howie Feltersnatch

After your guests go home, they all make fun of you. “What’s up with that guy and his lame-ass, 90s-style crapgames?” they ask. “He should get a real game system. Let’s quit coming over here.”

  • KBoogie

With all of noise & nonsence I still haven’t read a true response to the actual product. (Stupids-slow in apprehension or understanding.)

  • Aura

DO NOT BUY, this is a complete KNOCK-OFF and many attributes of the console & games deserves a LAWSUIT not only from wii. I’VE actually SEEN AND PLAYED this thing. All this economy budget crap has nothing to do with it when you directly try to say it a great alternative to the Wii when its not. ONLY BUY this if you have CHILDREN 8 & under because play-style and graphics are that similar to cheap dollar store key chain racing games which will only be entertaining to them or perhaps vintage game enthusiasts. Not to mention the whole point of the Sensor+Control Movement from Wii DOSE NOT APPLY to this thing at all sense it virtual half the time requires no movement except for basketball. Another fact if anyone plays this with short tempers then they will definitely destroy it after seeing how even though there are 2 distinct remote labeled 1&2 they both work as one at the same time causing a lot of rucks.

  • sharon

nice one couldn’t have put it any better myself-respect

  • Really

Wow, I can’t imagine how crappy your life must be for you to come on a site to review a product and verbally assualt someone for doing THEIR best for THEIR family. You’re right, condoms AREN’T expensive…might want to mention that to your folks!!! They should have used them.

  • http://yahoomail jojo

i have all ready got the zone40 in bm it was only 19 pounds and 79per

  • http://yahoo.com 40

at least he has a game system. you so poor you cant even afford to go to the free clinic

  • John

I bought it for $29.95 at CVS. I used a $5.00 CVS coupon to get the price down to $25.00. In addition, I got a free adaptor worth $5.00. So my total cost was about $20.00. In spite of all that, I’m taking it back. It’s just pure crap that is not even worth $20.00. I’ll simply apply the $20.00 to Wii.

  • Tank

Obama’s economy that he inherited from 8 years of Bush + 20 years of Republican congress. Stock market is up 2,000 points since Inauguration day.

  • Tamira Hopkins, Upland, CA

First of all, just wanted to say that CVS Pharmacy has this on sale for $29.99 today and their version of Wii Fit on sale for $39.99. I am going to buy both of them this morning. I have 4 daughters and have ever allowed video games in my house because I prefer the to play outside like we did as kids. When Wii came out, I loved it because of the interactiveness, but the price of games were crazy. With two of the girls in college (along with myself), one in high school and one in 5th grade, I think this alternative is pefect. We still get to enjoy our family games night beyond board games, but we get to do it AND be able to get them a new computer for school. Iprefer the facthat they ca’t get nline with this system. I have parental controls on my laptop to monitor where tey go online, and from what I hear, Wii doesn’toffer that safety mechanism.

BTW…for those of you (jackasses) that judge others by what they can afford, perhaps you should stop being one of the reasons I abhor capitalism!!! People like you get your money, have proably never walked a tough step in your life, and then walk all over the ‘little guy’ to get where you are, all the while you are putting those beneath you down for doing their best to make ends meet. You should be extremely ashamed of yourself. NOT the attributes I would like passed down to the next generation, so please keep your disdain, negativety, and hatred to yourself where it can eat you alive without darkening our world.

  • jklf

you could buy 1 wii and then get 3 remotes

  • Eric A.

I have never viewed this site before and cannot beleive the level of hostiliy here! I have been to many other forums that discuss much more controversial issues that affordable gaming systems and had people be more rational. That’s the beauty of the internet – it allows a person to anonymously vent their rage at people without any real consequense. Howie, I’m looking at you.

  • Eric A.

If your freinds only come over to your flat to play video games then I feel very sorry for you, Howie.

  • Me

I think it’s pretty appalling how few of you have anything relevant to say about the product. So it’s not a Wii. So what? Epiphone guitars may not be on a par with their more expensive Gibson siblings, but that does not mean the Epiphones should be condemned as junk (e.g. by people who’ve never played one) or that people should be reviled for using them. They were good enough for The Beatles and I dare say plenty of people will enjoy the Zone 40, especially given the price. As for all that lawsuit stuff–Far-Eastern manufacturers have known exactly how far they can take this stuff for decades, so I don’t see why the case of the Zone 40 should be an exception. Going back to the guitar analogy, Gibson ended up buying Epiphone, back in the day, because they knew they couldn’t beat them ;) Those of you who are old enough may remember the rash of Pong rip-offs that came along after that very first home console. I’m guessing a lot of companies made a helluva lot of money out of them.

  • Nicagee

Wow, I thank the only person here, Sarah for giving a real review. So many others are incredibly rude and boorish. I have a Wii for my kids and was looking to give these as gifts for the holiday giving tree. After reading about it, I am going to buy a few to give away. They are $29 today at CVS. Think it’s worth it and maybe someone will appreciate it.

  • Pamela

You know, I just came to this site to get a comparison between two products since the economy has certainly affected my pocketbook. But it really saddens me to see all of the negative comments and personal attacks on here. I just don\’t understand why there is so much anger and hostility toward others, especially over a game system. The world would be such a better place if people would just show a little kindness and respect. :)

  • chris k

GAME IS REALISTIC. I CANT GET ENOUGH OF IT. RAMBO IS THE BEST GAME ON THE BOARD……..

  • http://nice jackie ward

I’d like to respond to Howie on Sept 20th. I just found out aboiut the zone 40 and am, thinking of buying it for my Autistic grand son. I am a BLACK female 66 yrs old and I resent the idea that you have of my people. 1st. We are not all ghetto,. 2nd every black person is not a drug dealer. I am a retires R.N. with 42 yrs of nursing. The game I’m looking at seems tobe able to help my grandson as it not as complicated as the Wii. We have a Wii and he has trouble with the games . So I would like for yuo ,MR. Howie to get to know blacks, before you commet, you racist jackass.

  • jade999

This is most depressing site with negative people taking every opportunity to stab others and ruin others a chance to make kids happy. Who really want to buy anything for their kids if their kids have a classmate or friend like Lauren (the bitch from hell, nothing us good enough for her. I would slap the shit out of her and buy her shit) WAIT TILL she gets old and worthness…. maybe then she understand money doesn’t come easy. And perhaps she will eventurally learn MONEY is not everything and not the true happiness in life. Money can’t buy love, and certainly can’t buy happiness. Some family acturally find their life is happier before wealth.

As far as racial and political here in this site, go tell it to someone that cares. This is about a $30 to $40 game piece site. They are here to get info and feedbacks on the zone 40.

  • Viral Enigma

Hahahahahahahahahaha!!! you people make me laugh. You are on a website that shows a new product which is a cheap alternative to one of the cheapest next-gen gaming consoles ($149 now) and all you can seem to do is verbally attack each other? Truly remarkable. Growing up, I had a Sega Genesis. Was I happy with it? No. But that was when technology sucked. Now-a-days it’s all dual-cores and 16gb ram with a 1tb hard drive. If you really want to get your kids something nice and good for the holidays, get them something to increase their IQs not drop them down with the rest of the world. Books. Fiction, fantasy, romance, non-fiction, math related, history related. who cares. All in for a more intelligent and educated world where everyone doesn’t go around “blaming” each other and starting “flame wars” and are productive members of society, SAY I! (Indigo for life)

i bought a wii for my boyfriend and I than I went and got a zone 40 for my 3 kids and we love them. the only problem is i have no idea of why i got them because we could not wait to play and than two days later just nothing we dont even look at them but when friends come over they have a blast.

whats a condom?? did your mom forget to wear one

  • michael

I only came here to see if this game is worth the $40. Not to hear a bunch of adults that still play Lego Blocks. I just want to know if this Zone 40 Wireless Game system is any fun and how the graphics are. I know that its NOT a Nintendo Wii. It cost $160 dollars cheaper but does it play similar to a Wii? Are the games any good?

  • jamie darroch

hi im buying either a wii xbox or alternative for my boyfriend for xmas but does this console limit you just to the 40 games its installed with or can u buy different seperate ones? im kind of on a budget so this seems a good idea bbut id prefer it so you can buy seperate games aswell x

  • http://yahoo carol

with your attitude, are you sure you HAVE any friends??? and if you have 1/2 i’m sure they can find lots of other things to make fun of besides a lame game.

  • Jody

Thank you to sean deane and kieran, I needed a review and instead I got to read idiots insulting each other until your posts. As far as the “rip off” comment, did you ever stop to think that this was the original patent application and the large gaming corps were the only ones with the $ to develop it? Search for the original XBOX design from a no name person before Microsoft “developed” it.

  • Cris

I was looking at something cheap to replace a Wii for my son. He is 3 and does not need a 200 gaming system. He can make do with this. when he is old enough, then he can get the newest console. And well said to those above. the economy is not good enough to spend money in things that are not needed.

  • Matt

Honestly, if I had kids, and wanted to stay on budget, I’d probably just buy an older-generation system instead (Genesis, SNES, even PS1)

I had a PS1 when most people had PS2′s, it’s not so bad, really. At least older-generation systems have the legendary games of the days of old. (which are fairly cheap nowadays) Not cheaply-produced software that was probably the final project of someone’s Assembly Code course.

  • Yoshi

just bought the zone 40 at CVS on sale for 39.99 and i did recieve the ac power adaptor for free. First the graphics are hookey but what do u expect for 39.99. the interactive games like tennis and ping pong are my favorite and i have to admit i did have fun playing them. the other interactive games like bowling and golf scoccer and baseball i did not enjoy as much. the arcade games are a just to simple for me and i have not found one that i like to play. Overall i would say it is good only for the tennis and ping pong and i would not recommend it for a teenager. i will say to someone who wants to buy it to go ahead a purchase it and see if you it or not. If you dont like it they said i can return it for a full refund.

  • Simon Buckingham

HA! Funniest comment ever. I showed my kids the picture of the Zone 40 they got angry and tore up the circular.

  • http://10363sw6st yanelis muniz

I need to get that because my family have it

  • Colleen

Definitely an inherited mess. I’ll be so glad when we start seeing things turn around with more jobs…it’s coming. Soon maybe people will all be able to afford the Wii or whatever they choose to spend their money on. In the meantime…I appreciate your long review Sara! Down to the point and what I was seeking! Not this mess of ignorance.

  • nikki

wow, all the trash talking and nastiness was less than helpful. thought this was a website to get reviews on stuff, not a personal space for people to compalin about anything and everything from politics to race…if anyone has bought this and has an actual comment about it it would be appreciated. was planning on getting a wii for the house but kids’mom got one for them for christmas and there is no need for two of them, thought this might be a fun alternative but dont want to get it if the games are really lame or boring will just save up for a wii…so if anyone has actually played this thing and can tell me what some of the games are I would appreciate it, thanks!

I often wonder what really makes people sit at a computer and make comments like this. Anyway, here I am doing just that. All I can say is that there is a saying “fools and their money are soon parted” and I believe after working for a designer fashion company for many years that sometimes you are just buying a “name” and the priveledge of “keeping up with the Jones’s”. What happened to good old Family values of spending time with your precious children instead of shirking your parental duty and dumping the kids infront of a small screen! I think for the money, you get what you pay for it has 40 games, and no designer tag and boy am I grateful for the feeling of the extra money from the saving jangling about in my pocket.

  • g6

Howie has anyone ever told you that your an ass whipe? Be true to yourself you know you don’t even have a wii so get over yourself. I’m going to buy the consoul today its only 29 at cvs its worth a try. My daughter is not pickey she’s greatful for everything she gets exspecially now I’m off work due to a broken wrist so this is up my price range.

  • ME

Alot of these comments are RUDE,IGNORANT AND JUST PLAIN STUPID!!!! ITS A GAME SYSTEM!! WHO CARES WHERE ITS MADE OR THE FACT THAT IT DOESN’T DO WHAT THE WII DOES!! ITS NOT THE WII!ITS AN ALTERNATIVE FOR FAMILIES WHO CAN’T AFFORD A WII OR ANY EXPENSIVE GAME SYSTEM FOR THAT MATTER,I AM BUYING THIS GAME AND I AM ALSO BUYING A WII FOR MY BROTHER,SISTER AN MOM…I CAN AFFORD BOTH!! I AM ACTUALLY BUYING MY WII FROM QVC BECAUSE THEY HAVE A BUNDLE THATS A LIL OVER 300 BUCKS WHICH TO ME IS A BETTER DEAL THAN BUYING IT FROM WALMART OR SOMETHING…..U GET MORE EQUIPMENT.But I am buying this game for MYSELF an at CVS its only 29.99, im not expecting it to be as great as the WII but in my opinion the WII isn’t ALL THAT, I’ve played it……..people are so defensive on here like the WII is their life!! get over it!

  • gwen

i will like to kown if i should buy this zone 40 game thank you

  • ME2

Americans are really dumb!!!! They think the first item that hits the store is all that and will pay any amount. There head gets full of water, and they don’t really think. The one’s that really think are the ones who buy generic, they got more money in their pocket.

  • Peter

I can’t knock anyone who can’t afford a Wii, times are hard. But if you’re looking for a cheaper alternative this is not the answer. The games are shallow and get boring very fast. If you’re looking for an alternative I’d personally buy the re-issue of the Sega MegaDrive which is cheaper, comes with some great games and you can buy MegaDrive cartridges to play on it, meaning you are not limited to so many games.

    http://www.game.co.uk/Toys-and-Gadgets/PlugandPlayGames/~r341250/Sega-Mega-Drive-Console-15-Games-in-One/?mid=341250&cm_mmc=BigMouth-_-%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20Cool_Stuff-_-%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20Sega_Mega_Drive_Console_-_15_Games_in_One-_-link

There are some great games in that and it’s a much better alternative to those who cannot afford a modern console.

This Zone 40 isn’t very good quality at all.

  • E V

Do not buy this cheaply manufactured item. Imagine the embarrassment and ridicule your children will face at school when it’s discovered they don’t have the latest console system, and everyone else does.

If you insist on buying a console, buy a vintage console like a SNES, N64, PSX and so on – you could probably get a PS2 for under 50 dollars, with games, if you know where to look.

Here’s another suggestion – Buy them books, or a cheap laptop (80 dollars), so they don’t end up like you when they are older (Poor and clueless…)
There are thousands of high quality free flash games all over the internet, get them internet access for Christmas (Not to mention they’ll mature from all the knowledge on here.)

  • Linda

Did anyone try the zone 4o extreme fitness with the mat?
Does it make you move ? Is it effective work out ?

Also is the dancing girls a real dancing game ? Does that make you move ? Like the dance dance revolution ? I know there is no foot pad for it.

I was thinking about the wii console plus the wii fit plus and the newest DDR party 3 , but decided its too much money for us with everything needed.

Plus the fact all of these electronics deppreciate so quickly; not a good investment for the cost . I dont really care about the rest of the games so much.

  • Lenny Kotack

My child wanted a wii and I bought him this.

He now stays in his room, quietly rocking back and forth, wondering why I hate him. Sometimes he comes out only to sharpen his butcher knife, his new hobby gotten quite fond of. I lock my bedroom door at night.

  • Debbie Stutts

    Thank you Sarah,
I have been debating about this system for the last two weeks.
I am a single mom of a 7 year old girl who has only asked for a WII on her Santa list this year. She has played at others house with mutiple kids. I have just returned to work after being unemployed for 15 months and while I could get the WII it would be the only thing we would get in addition to I don’t believe she would play all that much without other children around. The Zone 40 is on sale this week at CVS for 29.99 and I have a rewards coupon for 5.00 more dollars off.
I have them holding one for me and after reading your review and Mary’s list of games I am on my way right after work. I only hope all of these other people are never left in a money crunch with children.
Merry Christmas and once again thank you!

  • Peter

    LMAO Lenny.

There’s a lesson to be learnt here people. Buying cheap rip offs can have very adverse effects on seemingly normal children.

  • jul

no lawuit to worry about evidently as this same system was sold last yr as well — it is n ecellent alternative to those that canot afford a wi n the kids will love it little things r better than nothing GOD BLESS R CHILDREN

  • Lindsey

Hi everyone! I have searched the web for quite a while now, just looking for the dimensions of the box that the zone 40 gaming system comes in. If anyone who bought the system or happens to know the dimensions of the box please let me know. Thank you!

  • http://none michael

First why do people compare this to the wii.

You get what you pay for say 25 pounds and not 180 pounds.

    Review here:

First make sure you have batt for

    Zone 40 review

First go and buy batteries for this you don,t get any.For some reason they don,t get you a philip screwdriver to remove the screw. This is a bad pain in the ass for something aim at kids

Ok there 40 games built in to this .

The word wireless is abit misleading and works on the same way as a remote control for a tv and not like the wii or the xbox 360 wireless pad does.

As for real time graphic they look like a super nes, megadrive in a way.Don,t think your getting wii grpaphic for this price.

The controllers do not charge up like the wii so make sure you have back up batteries.

The zone 40 is very light and easy to carry around but looks cheap for a clone in a way.

Some games are good and some are not ,the baseball one is not bad.The sound is ok for something at this price.

P.S: Not bad for 25 pounds and should keep the kids going for abit untill they get bored. But you pay for what you get in the end.

  • Karolin

We got the Zone 40 as a family game this morning for Christmas. We have 2 kids, ages 10 and 12, and they have played this all day. The visual quality is kind of fuzzy, for lack of a better word, but it is really fun. It is what you make it. We knew it wouldn’t compare to at least the visual quality of the Wii, but we just wanted something for a little family fun. That is more important to us than technological advances. We are having a blast with it so far!!! I am very thankful that a company came up with an inexpensive alternative to interactive video games for those of us on a budget….

  • s-j

Save your money, it’s not very good. The games graphics are of a similar quality to a sega megadrive. Your kids will know it is rubbish after 20 minutes.
Buy yr kids books or something you can enjoy with them other then this load of toilet

  • anon

Well I bought a Wii and a Zone 40 for my GKids. The WII SUX. On the boxing game I threw 415 punches and only 78 swung at the target. And YES it is set up correctly. For the money the kids play the Zone 40 all day and the WII WII sits on the shelf unused. Another form of American money going to another conglomerate company for crap that is over rated

  • Florence

You guys are cracking me up!!!

Well… I recently bought a Wii, had played it earlier this year with my sister, mom etc., had a blast. But I bought it because I wanted to get my son a game system. I had seen the Zone 40 at CVS and am technically savvy or just wise enough to know that I wasn’t going to get a $199 Wii from a $40 game. However, the main reason I chose the Wii is because of rock band, and the 19 dollar games cost about as much for us both to go to the movies or eat out and enjoy it then it’s gone. With a game, it continues to pay for itself. Oh, and did I mention I love rock band. But with economy slumping (but showing steady promise), a Wii is worth the lay-a-way at K-Mart. But wait a little while longer, I’m not downing a cheap gaming system, but for me.. I’m not the type of person to waste my hard earned money on something I’m not 100 percent or at least 95 percent sold on. I’m an IT Tech by profession and a gadget girl so I also like the fact that I can add to a Wii and I read somewhere in the instruction that Gamecube games can be palyed on this as well. And what if I don’t want all 40 games.. Cheap as they may be it’s still my dollar wasted that could be in my sons piggy bank. He’s playing the Wii now but when my sisters get here in the Spring it’s an all-girl rockfest-YEAH!!!

  • Tai

That post makes you seem inbred. Please stay off the internet.

  • http://www.product-reviews.net/2009/08/09/zone-40-wireless-gaming-alternative-to-nintendo-wii/ Sue

I asked my husband about the Wii & he didn’t want it so I thought this would give him something to do and he loves it ..reminds him of the old atari and nintendo systems. Kids are spoiled today & it’s our faults without realizing it. We were brought up to give our kids better than what we had and we go the limit to do it, but we are just starting to realize that we had it pretty good as kids. So lets blame the great great grandparents for making each generation want more for their kids. My grandkids all have psp3, dsl, Wii & you know what they asked me for for Xmas ???To make them all blankets pjs and bathrobes because you can’t BUY love in the store & when I say I will Buy them these things they say no nana you always make us the best stuff. The right fabric ..Skulls , wrestling, kittens etc..the softest material so they feel loved when they snuggle down at night and these are not little kids my 19 yr old grand daughter wants a queen size soft minky blanket. All I’m saying is forget the racial slurs & name calling althou believe me I know this is you Right, I lost my son in Iraq , fighting for your “RIGHTS” but it is every Parents right to provide for their child the best that they can whether with Wii or Zone 40 , because if Santa brought them a gift they are happy. Just think of those kids that didn’t get anything how Happy they would be to open a pair of gloves or a scarf or to have parents who love them. I know personally that everyone including the grandkids would GLADLY give back everything to have 5 mins more with their Uncle Mat , to here him say Merry Christmas guys Whats up..

  • http://? Jeff Hardy

    Guys Really
All this guy is doing is trying to help people that cant or doesnt like the wii. Sure it doesnt have the latest tech on it, but it is designed for kids that r very young. So while u guys hate on him, i respect him for helping people even though i have ps3, 360, and wii, AND NOW THE ZONE 40

  • stevo

Hi to everyone,i totally agree with all the positive remarks about the zone 40 as i too purchased one for my own use and i think it’s the best thing i’ve purchased for a very long time,as someone rightly said “it is a blast from the past”but with the added twist of today’s technology,i am 47 years young and would much rather use the zone than the xbox that i have,to finish off i would like to put my own fly in the typical consumers ointment,it goes like this i personally think that people only buy things like the wii to say that they have the latest technological offering just for the sheer hell of keeping up with the nextdoor neibour,i’m sorry for being affensive but it’s true,i wish everyone a very happy new year (uk citizen).

  • steve

What adverse affects?i don’t think that material gain is the key to a childs wellbeing at all and as far as pc’s are concerned all that a pc does is turn them into little mutes.

  • Jacks

Wow. Some of you really are elitist pricks.

Since when did having to buy cheap consoles become a reason for hating your parents? It’s a pretty poor knock-off, that much is true (trying hard to look like the Wii seems a big mistake really), but at the same time don’t go bashing people who WOULD buy this console because they have no other option.

The cheap option is hardly a bad one sometimes. If the choice is to buy the best high-end console out there with little income, or nothing at all, be glad that there is a middle ground on which people can game and be happy. You don’t have to buy it yourself, so kindly stop sneering down your fecking noses. You don’t have anything to lose by decently agreeing to disagree.

Personally, I had a Master System when I was 5, with one inbuilt game and three others at the very most, right until I was nine years old and I bought a Mega Drive with my OWN POCKET MONEY. My mum didn’t buy one for me, I bought it myself. So I wasn’t a fussy child, and I would rather have semi-decent games consoles and be able to play classic-styled games, than be completely denied of gaming experiences at all. Wouldn’t you agree?

  • http://www.facebook.com/aliabidispace Ali Abidi

Zone 40 never did get their idea from the wii, people think that just because it has a similar controller look. Zone 40 is actually not a lawsuit scam, it is just an ordinary game machine like the N-Joypad

  • constantine

well somebody likes it. sega are releasing a version of this full of there own games check out zone sega

Obama's economy??? Obama has been in office since Jan. 20, 2009. The sub prime crisis and current economic debacle was caused by the BUSH administration which allowed 8 years of abuse in the banking and derivatives markets.

  • http://creationsofwords.blogspot.com/ Oscar Fredhage

This is being promoted as an alternative for Wii. It certainly is not. The thing that sets Wii apart from other consoles is it's controller system; you can move the controller to move objects, tilt it and tilt something on the screen, tilt it while moving, etc. If you slash in one way, your sword slash in one way. Slash in another way, and your sword slash in another way.

The controller on this, on the other hand, has one feature; if you move the controller, it reacts exactly the same way as if you pressed the A-button. Always.

Therefor, it is not a good alternative to the wii.

"But", you might be thinking at this point, "it comes with 40 games included". Well, about them…
Well, this is true. However, some of these are basicly the same game. Also, I've had other "alternative" consoles before, consoles that came to a better price and included more games of far better quality. The graphics of these look wierd, fuzzy and… well, just bad (and this is compared to other alternative consoles, or major brand consoles released about 20 years ago, not modern consoles of major brands). And the sounds in them gets repetative, and eventually gets really anoying. The games themselves are quite boring in the long run, and you get tired of them within a few hours.

I'll give you the advice to either buy an older console of a major brand (a Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, PlayStation, etc), which you could probably find reasonably priced somewhere on the web (often with a couple of games included), or atleast that you look up other alternative consoles before buying this. The games on the Zone 40 are mostly re-makes/rip-offs of games you can find online, and there they most often have better graphics and, more importantly, are for free (for example, visithttp://www.newgrounds.com).

The Zone 40 is sold for about 40 dollars, but that's really not what it is worth. 10 dollars is about what I would say you should be ready to pay for it. Spend your money on something more worth it, or save them to eventually buy a major brand one. I can't stress this enough; if you are going to buy a cheap console, at least don't buy the Zone 40.

  • charli

this was a great review, i bought one this morning from CVS and was worried my kids may not like it they don’t game much so i thought this would be a good treat for them. but for everyone looking to buy one if you have a cvs card you can get one this week for 20 with a free ac adapter. i had to buy other things(things that i needed anyway diapers etc) and managed to get it for $10. great deal. and if the kids don’t like it i will take it back

once again thanks for the great review

  • RJAY

YOU ARE A COMPLETE IDIOT…. YOU ARE IGNORANT TO SAY SOMETHING LIKE THAT…… FROM THAT ONE STATEMENT LETS THE WORLD KNOW YOU ARE A MISERABLE HUMAN BEING….

  • 8>11=T;0011=3

Its ok, not great it will give you a wii like game with poor sound and poor graphics you get 40 games 1/2 are rubbish. Of the the remaining 20 games 15 are FUN (alot) due to the two player option or hand controller movement thing.
Technically the games are poor but if you play games for fun then at $1 a game it is easy to get your moneys worth.
I like it ,if you do not own a wii and own another games system then yes get one (hand controller movement thing),if you do own a wii forget it why would you?

  • http://www.kidsalwaysfirst.weebly.com annoyed

    does this work or NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thil

We have it, my kids love it. I'm not really into video games much, but I enjoy sudoko and a few others on the Zone40 from time to time. We choose not to waste our money on over priced items that consume our children's minds and our wallet. We prefer educational games, books, movies and spending time together. But it's a fun way to spend some family time together without breaking the bank. Really, we have better things to do with our money than spend several hundred dollars on a console and $40+ for games. It's probably nothing like a wii, but for us, we don't need more than the zone40. And if it breaks, well, we're not too worried about it….it's only 40 bucks! I guess the problem most people have is that they don't appreciate the things they have (family, home) and want more and more and the best of the best for themselves. Seems selfish to me.

  • Thil

As far as lawsuits, why? I'm sure they make enough money….though greediness the big corporations thing these days. What about the knock off apps for the iphone and htc phones? are they going to sue for that too? Why can't people be happy with less, and share with other people that have none? It's a greedy selfish world we live in! I feel sorry for ya'll that act that way.

  • hannah

my brothers just bought 6 of them. im not sure why… but we got them for only 4 dollars each. I think the store was REALLY trying to get rid of them.

  • Ron p

I have this unit and for the money–it's Super

  • Alex

The makers of Zone 40 cannot get sued for making this motion controlled gaming console. Is Microsoft going to get sued by Nintendo for making their motion controlled console? No. It's like Wyoming suing Colorado for looking too much like it.

  • Peter Wilson

will someone please email me a copy of the instruction manual for the 2009 zone 40 wireless game. With all the stores and talk , no one can come up with a manual. Had one but it seems to have grown legs and walked off. Thank you

  • robert

i had a zone40 and it caught on fire today.

  • The legit story

This game system is a total waste of money.

You can’t even compare this game system to the Wii.

This game systems graphics are MAYBE on par with NES that came out in the mid 80s.

If you buy this for your kids, your kids will NOT BE HAPPY.

The reason the Wii costs 200 dollars is because it uses sophisticated graphics processing hardware and software and the games are inter-changable.

This piece of crap plays 40 built in games and 40 built in games alone!!! It probably only plays garbage like the original Donkey Kong and maybe Duck Hunt. Hello!!!! How could you compare this to a Wii?

People, save your money and buy a Wii, If you buy this you’re getting ripped off. This game can only ever play the 40 games it comes with. The Wii can play whatever new games come out and is inter-changable.

This is not an alternative to a Wii, it’s a rip off and it’s nothing like the Wii at all.

  • Howie Feltersnatch

    Ghetto Wii is ghetto.

  • cjb3

THanks for your detailed report. I know I'm not buying a Wii! Geeze! I own a Wii already and was thinking of getting this for my 5 yo son.

  • CharlieS

"If I was a kid in Obama's economy, I would take whateverf I could get." Wow — what an utter lame comment to throw into a videogame review. Obviously, right-wing kooks like to troll videogame review blogs as they seem to have nothing else to do that's productive..

  • Pissed off american

A friend of mine's, child was lucky enough to get something for Christmas this year, he didnt care what brand it is. So those of you bitching about it not having internet, and what not. THINK of the kids that dont get anything, or have money to get anything. Thats all people thing about, THERE SELF, not the poor. So instead of spending your money of WII games, how about you donate it to someone that NEEDS it. No wonder America is going in the shit hole. Stop thinking about your self and think of those with nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • steelbox

I would probably buy an older system. PS1 in fact. You are not limited to just 40 games. 1000+ library of games a lot more fun. I do not condone piracy, but buying this is just a excuse for not downloading ilegally. Between an illegaly built system or illegaly download software, i think ill stay with the second. If you want to spend 40 buck for the kid to enjoy, i say take him out to the park, to a camping with a clean unpolluted river for your to enjoy the nature while you still can.
