Marine Corps Have Banned Facebook and Twitter
By: Jamie Pert | August 6, 2009 | 1 CommentAccording to an article that showed up on crn.com earlier today it seems that Marines have been issued a one year bane on social networks for a year, this is said to be due to the possibility of compromising the security to deployed units.
The ban is in place to stop Marines using sites such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, currently a lot of troops use these services to publicise their daily activities, however in the wrong hands this intelligence could be very useful.
There is one Twitter feed called ‘The U.S. Forces in Afghanistan Twitter feed’ this feed currently has near on 5,000 followers; the feed has been updated over 470 times, obviously most of the time these feed updates will not contain any ‘useful’ information, however why run the risk of giving the enemy any sort of information?
Do you think this is a complete over reaction? Or do you feel that it is a sensible decision? Feel free to add your comments below.
