Windows 7 Upgrade: For and Against

An extremely detailed 3 page article has appeared on ComputerWorld discussing whether or not to upgrade to Windows 7. The article offers an impartial look into the benefits and drawbacks when upgrading to Windows 7. The article mainly looks at Windows XP vs Windows 7 however does look into Vista as well.

The four reasons that the ComputerWorld article describes as reasons to upgrade to Windows 7 are, “finding stuff is easier”, “it looks better”, “its not as prissy as Vista”, “Windows 7 networks like a Hollywood pro”.

Windows 7 has really concentrated on making usage as efficient as possible, they have done this by creating improved search functionality including better indexing and the introduction of libraries which group media types accordingly.

Windows 7’s new impressive interface is by no means a necessity in an Operating System, however it does offer some increased functionality such as gadgets, and also lets face it is nice having a fresh looking interface.

One of Windows Vista’s downfalls was its extremely annoying constant security warnings and also the screen fadeout, this sometimes resulted in users being so frustrated that they would turn of UAC completely, defeating the purpose of the security feature. This has been vastly improved in Windows 7 with less frequent warning and very few and far between screen fadeouts.

One major advantage of Windows 7 is its improved networking capabilities and how easy it is to set up home networks, all settings are integrated into a simple to use interface which even relatively inexperienced users should be able to use.

As for the disadvantages associated with upgrading to Windows 7, ComputerWorld list the following as the main issues, “tough to find the right version of the OS”, “it’s not necessarily faster”, “XP buffs still have to relearn everything” and “Microsoft is keeping XP as a stand-in”.
