Nissan Leaf and Cash-for-Clunkers: Changing Car Market

After the massive success of the “Cash for Clunkers” scheme last week, big question marks have popped up above the car market. It seems that more people than ever in the US are going for smaller and more economic cars. The Financial Times website has reported that Ford were the main benefactors of the “Cash for Clunkers” scheme with their small Ford Focus saloon being the most purchased car and Ford’s flagship SUV the Ford Explorer being the most traded in vehicle.
Also Nissan recently showed off its new mass-market electric car, the “Leaf”. And this car seems to have captured the attention of the American Market too. When the Leaf is launched, Nissan intends for it to cost the same to buy and run as an equivalent petrol-powered car, and Nissan does not intend for this vehicle to be a niche product but a mass market product. If the Leaf does indeed take off once it is launched we could see the end of an era of gas-guzzling beasts.
The “Cash for clunkers” scheme could quite well have started the ball rolling on the biggest change to happen to the US car market since the introduction of the internal combustion engine or the scrapping of steam power, I guess only time will tell, but watch this space!
