Garmain looks as though they have done a u-turn on connected PNDs. A Nuvi 1690 has now shown up on the FCC website and it looks as though it has been cleared. The new device will offer both GSM + GPRS cellular connectivity.

According to GPS Traclog, in the past, Garmin took the approach that consumers did not want yet another monthly bill on top of their cell phone plan, this lead the company to develop the nuvifone. We will now have to wait to see if Garmin have an alternative subscription model for their latest device.

GPS Tracklog does not have much information on the Garmin Nuvi 1690; although they do point out that it will include features such as Bluetooth, as well as being able to utilize the Wavecom GSM modeule Q2687. It is assumed that the new device will be available in time for the shopping season.
