Cash for Clunkers: Staff Doubled for CARS Program
By: Peter Chubb | August 4, 2009 | Leave a CommentThe recent Cash for Clunkers Program has proved so popular that the U.S. Transportation Department has now doubled its staff; the reason is so that they can try to clear the backlog of dealer application for the Car Allowance Rebate System or CARS program.
The backlog thought to be in the hundreds of thousands has proven too much for current the U.S. Transportation Department staff; this was evident in how quick the governments’ $1 billion package was exhausted. Since then, the house has now voted 316-109 for an emergency measure to allow a further $2 billion for CARS.
According to Bloomberg, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is hoping that the House will act quickly and rush this measure through. The huge backlog of applications has lead to dealers complaining, as they have been spending hours with the Transportation Department to try to process these applications.
