PS3 Slim and Price Cuts: Production Increasing

We have more news on the rumored PS3 Slim console for you to read now, as it has been reported that Sony are increasing production of PS3 units in preparation for the release of an 160GB Slim model.

According to Electronista, Sony have been ordering double the amount of hardware parts for this Summer, compared to what they ordered in Spring. The increased demand of the parts has led to lack of supply at Renesas, which make key chipsets for the PS3.

This has led to speculation that Sony are pushing on for a redesigned PS3 between August and September, with a price cut also following at the same time.

How does an ‘increased demand of the parts’ lead you to believe there will be a price cut? Terrible journalism.

Higher volume purchase will lead to cheaper parts but surely the Slim will require new parts (and modified production) so it can’t possibly come out at a keen price. Then again, the PS3 Mk1 could potentially benefit from a slide in price if the new Slim is to sit alongside it.

However, all this makes me wonder why they’re pushing for a Slim in the first place. The PS3 is a stunning looking console and one that sits proudly with any HD television. Unlike the 360, which looks a little hurried in the aesthetics-department.
