PS3’s First Pay-To-Play Video Game

According to a report on TheSixthAxis Sony have now released a new game on its Japanese PSN Store, this game is called Gomi Bako and is the first game which has been released on a pay-to-play basis.

The game costs ¥100 for 3 lives, which in UK currency is about the equivalent if around 69p, if this game becomes popular it may lead to more and more pay-to-play game emergin on the PSN Store.

Personally I feel that it is better to buy full games rather then paying to play, as I would imagine it would be quite easy to become addicted to the game and rack up a large bill.

Do you like the idea of paying to play?

I think the idea is a very good way to see if you like a game. However, what would be great would be if you could then stump up a certain amount of readies for the game per month and cancel a direct debit (or standing order) if you no longer want to play it.

eg. Mod Nation Racer comes out. I pay £2 per month and just kill the subscription when I lose my interest. When it comes down to it, we only have so much time to game so perhaps a metered service isn’t so bad. Constant revenue for the gaming industry and each software house would see trends forming; knowing which games to support and which games to let slip then plough their efforts into new offerings.
