Command and Conquer 4 requires always-on Internet

Following our recent article regarding Command and Conquer 4 more information is starting to emerge, however not all of this information is good news. According to a report on ArsTechnica, to play Command and Conquer 4 you will require an active Internet connection at all times.

The reason for the constant Internet connection is said to be because of the new “player progression” feature which allows everything to be tracked. The Community Leader of APOC said “No matter what mode you’re playing, no matter what you’re doing, if you want to play Command and Conquer 4, you’re going to need to have a working Internet connection.”

As the data is primarily for tracking purposes bandwidth usage wont be high, and apparently a dial up connection is sufficient for the amount of traffic it causes.

While I understand that most gamers these days have Internet connections I do feel that it will cause a lot of user’s frustration, especially people who have temperamental Internet connections.

I don’t really care much for C&C 4, but for some reason, I am quite disappointed by the fact that more and more games are going for the “always-on internet” requirement – or something to that effect (see Starcraft 2). Taking out playability just because there’s no net connection is pretty whack. It’s absurd that one wouldn’t be able to even play their single-player campaigns offline. And because of that, this game has already lost a significant amount of their target audience.

I agree. This is kind of ridiculous IMO.

What a joke. This is obviously because of piracy and I wish developers would just come out and say it instead of lying outright to their consumers. I’d be willing to bet this new feature was implemented purely as an excuse for them to inconveniencing legit consumers in favor of a few bucks. I’d also be willing to bet that this plan backfires just like always, and they end up with a game that doesn’t sell nearly as many copies. I’ve never really liked the C&C series too much, but it’s a shame to have to mark another RTS off my prospective buy list when there are so few being developed these days. Oh well, I’ll live.
