Sony’s Downloadable PSP Games: following iPhone’s success

By: Alan Ng | July 15, 2009 | 2 Comments

It has been reported that Sony will no longer require concept approval from developers who are working on games for the upcoming PSP Go console. Looks as if the move is due to Sony’s plan to get developers interested in the UMD-less handheld as much as possible.

As GamaSutra reports, Sony has already cut the price of PSP dev kits, as announced a few months ago. Sony are also offering shorter quality assurance processes and better yet, allowing low price points for some new titles.

Gamasutra also states that the PSP Go download service will operate in a similar way to Apple’s App store and might even offer non-gaming applications. Interesting.

The PSP go will die a death, it’s way over priced and has far less functionality than the iPhone or original PSP for that matter. Sony are fools if they think they can replicate the iPhone and iPod market, where the costs are minimal once you have your hardware.

Looking at the iTunes Store is a very solid idea. The Apple community is something to be respected. However, that initial hardware price-point simply must come down. Why replicate the failings of the PS3 cost in mobile form? For the love of god… think, Sony! Get good quality hardware out at an affordable price.
