Palm Pre Users: We want a virtual keyboard

There’s just no pleasing some people is there? It has been reported that many Palm Pre owners are complaining over the lack of a virtual keyboard on their device, with many of them wanting an on-screen keyboard similar to that which Apple’s iPhone has.

According to Electronista, many are annoyed that they have no alternative than to use the hardware keyboard on the Pre, when most would prefer a virtual on-screen solution.

It is thought that Palm prefered against adding a virtual keyboard, so they could save up more space on-screen for data. Little did they know that so many users would be complaining about their QWERTY keyboard.

What are your thoughts on the Palm Pre keyboard, is it really that bad?

This started because there was word going around that someone with the SDK found a virtual keyboard in the Palm Pre that could be used in landscape mode. This created a lot of curiosity and buzz about the virtual keyboard on the Palm Pre. I think the wording that “Palm Pre owners are complaining over the lack of a virtual keyboard on their device” is a misrepresentation.

I love the keyboard on my Pre! It’s easy to use and the layout is awesome with dedicated buttons for internet use like period, @, /, and the much used _ button. The keys feel great and the bevel on them makes it easy to know which key you’re pressing. So despite the small size of the keyboard I rarely find myself making typing errors. Go Pre! This phone rocks and once you get used to it it’s so much faster to get work done with the ability to have as many open windows as you want. I’ll never go back to the stone age!

Having used a Palm Centro for a few years now, I find the Pre keyboad simple enough to use. I especially like the dedicated “@” and “.” keys. Occasionally I have to search for a punctuation or accentuation mark, and the keys are hard to read, but overall I like it.
