It is not all bad news for AMD, we know that Intel are dominating the desktop and laptop markets but AMD are doing a much better job in the server market. AMD have now announced five new chips, two of these will be six-core Opterons, which are highly efficient.
According to Daily Tech the two low power, HE 45nm processors are intended for those servers that require 4, 6 or 8 processors. The first is the 2423 HE six-core Opteron, this will run at 2GHz the other is the Opteron 2425 HE, this will run at 2.1GHz.
The new HE processor range has a price of $455 to $1,514 and will have to be purchased in 1,000 unit quantities. This new low power chips use just 55 watts of power, a typical Opteron chip uses 75 watts or 105 watts. This allows enterprise users to pack more servers in to its data centers without the worry of increased power consumption.
