8000 computer viruses caught by NHS

According to a report shown on www.publicservice.co.uk more than 8000 computer viruses have potentially caused disruption to the NHS within the last year, although exactly how much disruption has been caused is hard to calculate an independent review state that it was “entirely avoidable”.

The reason for the many infections is said to be a combination of many unnecessary security breaches, this is mainly due to people turning of automatic updates for antivirus protection and for the Operating Systems security patches, also some PC’s are said to have antivirus protection either turned off or incorrectly configured, this occurred in over 10 hospitals.

With so many infections within the network some important PC’s were left unable to access patient information and X-rays, which obviously caused major disruption in day to day tasks.
