PlayStation 4 (aka PS4): Expectations

We have an article for you to read now which checks on the current progress of Sony’s Playstation 4 console. They have listed the facts of what we know so far, as well as expectations that everyone hopes to see in the new console.

As reported from Play-Mag, they state that Sony have been working on the PS4 for at least two years now and that an expected release date should be around 2011 / 2012. They also say that Sony will need to appeal to a much wider audience with the PS4, if they are going to be a success.

As for hardware, Play think that the PS4 will be once again be powered by Cell, but this time with several chips working together. Other features can include real 3D imagery and Super High Definition.

They also state that the PS4 wont have a dual shock controller and that they think the new console will rely more on voice and movement recognition.

Some interesting points there, have a read of the full article and let us know what you think.

The article (at it’s core) is full of conjecture with a healthy dollop of nonsense. Although it fuels something interesting. What would we expect from a new PS4?

Definitely want a dualshock controller still. Good quality anti-aliasing as standard (so those HD games look suitably decent). I don’t see them going for DLC only. I think a PS4 would still need to cater for some sort of optical media (or equivalent) but could well be the last Sony console with such a thing. DLC for the PS5 I reckon.

I think the smartest thing Sony could do is learn from their mistakes. This means that even if the hardware isn’t the most powerful next-gen, they’ll still lead the industry.

the problem with HD games is that most of them look very jaggy and the details aren’t well resolved. i say look at warhawk. It’s 720p with clean detailed textures. it has great controls.

I prefer alot of low def games simply because the objects are resolved and you can see the detail clearly. HD games to me look very bland. They just don’t have enough resolved detail. Objects are jagged and there is a lot of artifacts. its like all the objects and textures are low def- which they are, but they are using high resolution frames which show all the flaws.

It’s like animations like ice age. the animals are made at very high resolution so all your eye can resolve is realistic character. the actual frame resolution is respectively similar if not more.

Trick is, to have enough resolution to resolve the pixel detail. too low and the image is unresolved. Too high res and the detail is too minute for eye to resolve.

Games need more depth, too many games. killzone 2 is a good example of using depth of field from FPS perspective. I think gears of war two is the best in regards to detail, subtlety and animation. of except for the problem it has of delaying the textures being made.

I think if you have too much monotinous details then your eye lacks the immediate recognition of what object is.

I think ps4 should be a console, cloud gaming is a pipe dream. Too slow.

Use 4 cell processors in unison. quad graphics card system. 12 gigs of ram. If sony made such a system stricly to play games unlike pc’s. Then we could see a new benchmark in quality. The idea is to make games much cleaner. current gen have pretty good detail but suffer badly from artifacts.

And stereoscopic 3D should be standard on the console so you can use shutterglases and other methods. Not bl*%dy anaglyph.

I wish a developer could work on bringing binaural sound to games. the idea being that you can virtually see where the sound is coming from. You can hear people move up and whisper in your ear which is earie. I think binaural is what would really engage the nrain with the game.

Yeah I don’t know if the PS4 will be all that we are expecting. In 2011 we’ll finally get to see the next generation of gaming consoles – who can guess what it will include? We didn’t really know much about PS3 except for video capabilities, I think Bluray was quite a surprise. But I would not be surprised if all games came as downloadable content. After all, there is over a year before we will see the finished content. Everything is going towards the internet, anyways, and Xbox360 is already utilizes a lot of their internet powers to promote their gaming. It is only logical that PS4 would follow suit.
