Expectations: Google Chrome OS download and release date

There are huge expectations already for Google Chrome OS and the news only officially broke a couple of days ago. There is no official download release date for the new operating system, but we do know that a range of Netbooks will have the opportunity to run Google OS in the second part of 2010.

We do expect the new OS to offer fast wireless WAN capabilities, much faster than today’s standard. What Google will also focus on is speed, and this will be done by making certain that its new operating system will not hog system resources, something that Windows is famous for.

We reported in an earlier post that Google Chrome would be free, and this will certainly have a huge impact on people’s decision to download the OS. We run a poll yesterday asking if you would download the new Google Operating System, I am certain that the news that we will not have to pay will make a few people change their minds.

Yesterday many of our users asked which hardware manufacturers would be offering the new Google Chrome OS in their Netbooks; we now have the answer for you, read our recent article on that here.

Let us know what your expectations are for Google Chrome OS

    Happy Days
Will change to Google chrome OS the second it is available. Microsoft’ lousy products stuffed in our left ear now can stop. The arrogant anticustomer attitude will end. Vista was the ultimate middle finger from MS. Looks like the Redmond Giant will wind up where GM is –Bankruptcy First– Gone next
    HAPPY DAYS !!!!!!!

no way mate, microsoft still rules, the chorme os wont be running all the applications, servers will still function with ms software, and you didnt talk ab out windows 7 it is one good osi have tested it for three months now without any problem and im running it on a low spec computer so mate MS will still rule, but i welcome google os i will se it but microsoft will never die or shake

      • “no way mate, microsoft still rules”

        lmao, are you kidding me???????

don’t know about the new chrome cuz i havnt run it yet, but i can certainly tell you microsoft, and everything done by them is nothing but crap.

        Linux baby! FTW

      • Tyler says:

I agree microsoft rules and always will

        • Mees says:

          Yes,
Microsoft Windows will still be the primary OS on New pc’s I think.

But I must admit, Vista Sucks!
I’m gonna buy 7 as fast as possible.

I think I’ll give Chrome OS a try on my older Pc….

      • mikedawgy says:

dude get a grip Mac is the ultimate, I just wish I could afford it, lmao, I have used ms windows 7 also on a low grade pc, honestly, surprisingly I haven’t had any problems, but I still have to say I absolutely love using my xubuntu,

    • Matt says:

Try Windows 7 before talking smack on Microsoft. It’s a lot better than Vista because it runs more smoothly and takes up less resources.

      • Mitchell says:

The problem with Microsoft lies not only in speed, but also in security thousands of viruses exist for windows, compared to close to none on linux. You can try to say “It’s because Linux has no market share”, but this is not the case. Almost every server runs Linux or BSD. Including sites dealing with lots of money like banks, so it is most profitable to hack linux, it’s just so damn hard because it’s so secure. I could go more in depth here with how open source improves security, and Windows has no root account and so on, but I’d rather keep my comment under a page long.

Microsoft also has NO real package manager. (Add/Remove is NOT a package manager). I mean a centralized Install/Update/Uninstall program for managing all software on a computer, like Ubuntu’s “Software Center”, or Synaptic if you’re more advanced.

You could try to argue that Linux isn’t as compatible,
-No MS Office *BAM!* Linux has OpenOffice, which is perfectly compatible (And no ugly ribbon)

-No Games, try UrbanTerror, Sauerbraten, Tremulous, or Wolfenstein, there’s plenty of games

So for almost every Windows software, there’s a Linux equivalent

And as for speed, no matter what windows does, a system that needs de-fragging can never stay as fast, for as long as a system that never fragments in the first place

        Linux-1 Windows-0

Idiot. How are you going to use any of Office Applications? Any real software? Chrome OS is for browsing the web & that’s it. It is not an ideal replacement for any OS, the only thing it will be good for is running alongside another OS.

      • air2 says:

Hmm and how do you think what applications will be in a few year? I guess we will see a lot more ‘online’ applications, like google docs, or office@live, live@edu, google apps etc. So I bet chrome OS is googles weapon. Because the OS is lightweight, pretty vast including SPDY (googles successor of HTTP). So the way its going I see huge potential for chrome OS.

  2. a BITCH says:

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

FINALLY…MICROSOFT WILL HAVE SOMEONE TO COMPETE!!!

    • Anonymous says:

This will not compete with Microsoft, it’s a completely different share of the market retard.

      • yoyohomie says:

Ummm yes they are on the same market. They are both operating systems, and the apple os hasn’t been able to make a dent in microsoft’s profit, Chrome wil though. Microsoft did so well they had to give out their codes to other companies to avoid monopoly, issued by government

    • Anon says:

Microsoft are already competing massively with Apple.. idiot..

      • 1man says:

ha ah funny 3% Apple to 90+ % Microsoft big competition
ha ha chrome is gonna be a burden to google vista didnt suck it was too early released with no support. when users run into problems they gonna start blaming Google when the problem probably has nothing to do with them.

    • joed says:

well i think its not gonna be a great competitor for windows but,

lemme ask u how many people know about the other OS exixting

probably those computer geeks only would try to use this but

if it really works great still

MS wont get bothered with this

it’ll be difficult to turndown ms thou many people have many complaints theyr still using it

  3. steve says:

Does anyone know if it will run on generic desktops? What will driver support be like?

  4. Matt says:

Yet another OS that won\’t do anything…no MPEG2 stack, no iTunes, no Photoshop, no Bittorrent, no Nero, no WinRAR, no GPS navigation without the internet, no media management CD/DVD rip & burn, no ACID Pro, no EphPod, no iMovie, no Movie Maker, no Final Cut Pro, no Excel, no Look@LAN, no Wireshark, no Ethereal, no GoldWave, no IZArc, no QuickTime, no VMWare Workstation, No VideoLAN, no Veeam, no ImgBurn, no Visual Studio, no Softerra LDAP Browser, No MapPoint, no ProTools, no AVID…nothing freaking cool at ALL….I can’t WAIT for it to hit the street!!!

    • linux runs VMWare (but why, when you can use Virtualbox for free?), also can run MS Office and Adobe CS3 under Crossover Office, and has native versions of Nero, Bittorrent, etc, file-roller (which comes with damn near every version of linux can open RAR files as well as just about any other archive format. In fact, Linux comes ready with free alternatives to just about every piece of software you mentioned above.
      BTW, Linux had VideoLan first.

    • Jenkins says:

      Matt,

Most of what you said “Well it doesn’t have this or that…” You need to wake up. It’s based on Linux therefore Linux applications will work. No Nero? There is a Nero version for Linux plus great alternatives, No Excel? Have you heard of open office? No VMware? There are other alternatives to VMware and even there is a version of VMware for Linux. No Wireshark? Really? There is also a quicktime for Linux as well. No Bit Torrent? Yeah right because Linux is anti Bit Torrent and they don’t have any bit torrent clients… *rolls eyes*

It’s time for you Microsoft fan-boy to wake up and look around. I’ve wasted entirely to much time on you…

      • travis says:

just about every single item he mentioned, short of pro-tools, which is a mac-only item, works just fine out of the box with many versions of linux. i could name them, but it’s pointless.

my guess is he just looked at the apps listing on his mac and ranted about which one’s he -thinks- no one else can use.

typical mac user thought process - “i got a mac. you don’t have a mac. you can’t do what i can do, cuz i got a mac. it was expensive because it was better, and it can do what your computer can’t.”

        whatever.

      • lezlow says:

linux isn,t anti anything get linux ubuntu download super ubuntu 9.04 and download qbit torrent no probs better than windows no anti virus windows sucs but we suck harder and longer?

      • Jenkins friend says:

It’s based on Linux therefore Linux applications will work? Same thing was said about Android at first, then google said it uses a modified version of the linux kernel thereby making it impossible to run other linux app on it. What about if Chrome OS is the same story?

As for those apps you guys are mentioning, dont you realise that this is an OS that has more to do with the internet?

    • Eric says:

      Hello

No bittorent, no winrar, what are you talking about, look properly before commenting. Linux have very serious business backing are growing in leaps and bounds. Look out microsoft the good times are over for you.

  5. Todo says:

Googles Chrome Browser wasn’t all it was cracked up to be and we’re still waiting for all the add ons they’ve promised. This sounds like just more hype. Also, Cloud Computing and Security don’t belong in the same sentence, after all this is Google were talking about…
I’ll of course toss it in VM ASAP but I’m setting my expectations quite low.

    • Steve M says:

I’ll agree that although I love google chrome, it leaves A LOT to be desired, and it’s nowhere near as good as IE or FF as far as website compatibility and smooth flash and media scrolling, etc.

I expect this OS will be better than the Chrome Browser is, mostly because it’s built on an already solid linux OS, and in fact if they have thinned it out to be fast, it may also be more secure (less running, less vulnerabilities) and more reliable as well. Hopefully other versions will surface after the netbook version with more functionality but still easy for anyone to use.

At worst it will definitely give Microsoft some competition and that’s always good! Can’t wait to try it.

  6. SaintlyMic says:

I have been so sick and tired of Microsoft’s ways of doing business. My first freedom from Microsoft was Sun’s Open Office Bundle, which is FREE! And, just as soon as the Google Chrome OS is available for download I am going to get it, install it, and put it through the tests. I tried Microsoft’s Vista and found it to be way too expensive and a piece of garbage. Vista was nothing more than a slap in the face to those of us who demand more for less! Instead, Microsoft offers less software for more money! And the way Vista breaks down it makes me wonder where Microsoft is headed next! I hope the Google Chrome OS outperforms Vista and Microsoft’s future Windows 7!

  7. John Hawklyn says:

Google Chrome will be fun to explore on a test system. Compatibility with legacy files, systems, devices will probably play a big role in getting any mainstream adoption early on. OTOH, as people are used to things aging out, perhaps they’ll be able to skip support for older parallel/serial/firewire/scsi ports and devices, freeing them to be able to focus on USB and Sata.

The relatively recent CanSecWest security conference’s in March of 2009 lends credence to the security that the folks at Google are mindful of. MicroSoft has been playing catchup on this front for some years now….

For Home/Student users I can see that A Google Browser based computer system could handle the majority of computer needs for the majority of non-computer pro’s. Folks that make their living off of computers with specialized computer applications will probably still be stuck with Microsoft tho…

One of my concerns with the thin-client model. Err, I mean the Cloud computing mode, is data durability. I’m not too worried that Google will up and evaporate, but other companies may not fare so well.

It will be fascinating to see where we are in five years with this!

    • GarethUbuntu says:

A Great Competitor against Microsoft And Apple!

I hope Google Uses Some (If Possibly All) Of Linux And Its Community’s Hard Worked Effort In Chrome OS

I Use Linux Every Day And There Will Be A Good Possibility/Chance Google Will Help Linux Overthrow Microsoft’s Reign In The Software World Or At Least Convince More Software Companies To Make Software For Linux And/Or Release Their Source Code Under Open-Source Licenses Such As The GNU General Public License, GNU Lesser General Public License and BSD License.

  8. Steven says:

HAHA. My anti-spam word is MICRO. They just need to get rid of that company all together (MICROSOFT) sucks.

When this operating system comes out, i am so gonna download it and install on all 6 of the computers in my home, including my personal laptop for school.

I am tired of Microsoft Vista always crashing, and having no support. Then XP is pretty good, but does crash all the time, and now it has absolutely no support.

OMG THEY NEED TO RELEASE THIS OS.

    • Jim says:

Lol, you will put it on every computer you own, have fun when nothing works…idiot.

      • Alex says:

If you are talking about apps not working, then you obviously know nothing about the amount of Linux apps.
If you are saying the computers won’t work, Linux takes less resources than both Mac and Windows.

  9. james says:

This sounds like just another way of pushing another UN!! needed distro of linux. or as my customers say LinSux. I’ll be glad to put it through its paces. But the main question if thier going to compete with the OS Kings(MS & MC) then it’ll will have to be easy to use and easier to learn. It will have to include every thing from the kitchen sink to Snow Shows, People have come to expect alot from a OS these days and its hard to get them to settle for less. by The way I like and use Dabien, and fedora. But getting a customer to try it is like riding on the space shuttle. Hope them well but, they better be prepaired for a swam of problems.

  10. lezlow says:

i personally dont use google because they succum to governments inrespect to privacy imagine haveing this on yourdesktop giving everything about you to… whoever?
    not wise

    • Sneh says:

Hey you bunch of jobless people.. if you say Microsoft does not provide support then let me wake you up and ask you to use genuine Microsoft products. Microsoft’s support is considered to be the best!! and that is the reason why 90% of the corporates go for Microsoft products.

Talking about Vista, I agree it was not a big hit as it had many bugs and also required more resources.. but Microsoft does listed to its customers and give them what they want..

wait for Windows 7 and you will see what a piece of magic it is….

and for those who are in server manageent roles…. just wait and watch Windows 2008 R2.. it will rock the entire industry.

Talking about Google’s chrome, its still a baby… it will take them atleast another 50 years to think of competing with Microsoft !!..

      • matt says:

        1. There is no need for insults
        2. Yeah MS does provide support, it may have great corp. support but those of us that aren’t part of a company’s IT team wouldn’t know this would we?
        3. Do you really think 90% of corps use only ms products
