Google Operating System: Will you Download?

We mentioned this morning in an earlier post that Google announced that they are to launch Google Chrome OS some time in 2010. Google Chrome is a browser and is used by millions around the world; this is because it performs much faster than Internet Explorer.

Google thought that they would build from this and offer an Operating System version of its popular browser. The open source code for Chrome OS will be released towards the end of 2009, which is perfect timing for when Microsoft launches Windows 7.

Those who purchase a desktop PC or Netbook in 2010 will not have the choice of what OS they wish to run, but what one would you choose. Most might say that they will stick with Windows as they feel safe with the software, but it is no secret that Windows always have problems and hogs so much system resources.

It will be interesting to see how much faster a PC or Netbook will perform while running Google Chrome OS.

Google should try to work up and release the new os before Windows 7

    • harry says:

With all respect , i think that we definitely need a beta to try it out, but on the other hand it shouldn’t be released before 7 so they could improve and learn from “their” bugs as well…

    • nathan says:

i am Exited to hear about google creating an os i have high expectations for it. i cant wait to give it a go. : D

  2. Jamal Masoud says:

We need a beta version for testing.

  3. David D says:

I can’t wait!! After Microsoft monopolizing PCs for so long with a flawed system I’m looking forward to a new operating system. After all, it can’t be worse than Windows!

    • Alex Wyatt says:

Having tested Windows 7 through various stages of its development and been VERY impressed I cannot wait to see what the Google OS turns out to be like. Win 7 will kill Vista stone dead (and about time too!) Hopefully Google have looked at ALL of the very many flaws in Windows (whichever version) and will release a product that works, is pleasing to look at and functional/customisable for those who wish to tweak. Good luck Google!

      Hi all.

I have been using Windows 7 build 7100 for months and have to say it runs well on my old MSI M670 note book with no reportable problems todate….

This is not a useful question. It is like asking “if there is an accident will you look?” the question should be something like “will you switch?”

    • John Hawklyn says:

It’s way to early to determine whether a switch is advisable. Probably for may computer professionals, often dependent on customized Windoze software, switching will be impossible, at least for a few years.

OTOH, for folks beginning to use computers, this could be a low-priced easy to use option that will make computers like appliences, spurring a slow ramp-up of serious adoption, at which point it *may* become mainstream.

      Time will tell.

In the mean time, I’ll load it on a secondary PC, along with some of my Linux explorations.

hello!!! I am clkwong@ . I love Microsoft , Apple and Linux operating system because I have choosed for my personal computer. It is great for Google to make another operating system in Intel PC. that means more softwares will be created for the end-user espeically for home business users which means that more moeny to be maken by computer software industry. And one more important and valued traits is that at least two computer should be purchased in home for two different operating system in home. Are you get the point???
More computer hardware will be sold.

I hope Chrome is a easier to use Linux. (The problem I have with LINUX is loading new programs) I have played around with Freespire, Puppy (this can be installed on a flash drive), Fedora, and some of the other Linux OS. I am impressed. I haven’t bought a new computer because of manufacturers not releasing motherboard drivers for XP, so I still use a 2.2 ghz Athalon64 socket 754 from 04. I think it is fitting for someone to piss in MS’s cornflakes, because they have been so arrogant about sticking VISTA down our throats. After all MS’s BS, VISTA is not as good as XP. I should have my choice of OS on a computer I pay for.

    • John Hawklyn says:

I’ll bet the Chrome OS will be MUCH simpler than Linux. I’m apprehensive that like the Chrome browser, it will be so much more simpler, like an appliance, that power users won’t have much down and dirty command-line controls.

Look at what Google has done with the Chrome Browser as compared with the Firefox browser… I suspect that pattern to be followed.

    • I see you never mentioned using Ubuntu within the linux distros, if you haven’t tried, i would strongly advise giving it a shot. As for the Linux Based OS from our friends at google, just take a look at the android OS for the G1 phone, that should give us all an idea as to what google could have in store for us as an OS in the near future, and John, you are VERY right, made by google, should be waaaaayyy simpler than any other linux distro.

      • Fredo says:

You are correct! Ubuntu and it’s derivatives rock! Amazingly easy to use and for those ppl who really can’t be without MS and specially now that computers come loaded with RAM and hd space, why not use Virtual Box. It’s relatively simple… an OS inside another… I do that for the apps that only exist on Windows.
OTOH, I’m not so sure simple is good… for those of us who need more control and love to get down and dirty with their machines, this isn’t the way to go… there are still a lot of n00bs hence probably why they chose this road.

        my 2 cents

  7. steve says:

This will be great as long as hardware makers support it with drivers. That’s been the problem with Linux, but maybe Google with have better luck. I’m more and more getting away from M$ and into Linux. Apple is way too expensive, so any thing that runs an a generic Intel platform will be for ME!!

  8. Steve says:

Looking forward to trying out the new OS. Will it be able to use open source software such as open office? Or is this intended to solidify Google’s hold on web based applications only?

How will it compare to Ubuntu, the Linux distro that’s is leading the fight against Micros**t?

  9. malik says:

Hell , we need to get free from cops knocking your door for bill gates. please google hurry up , imagine someone paying 80 dollars for windows in third world where it take 6 months to earn it.

  10. Chris says:

I have the RC of Windows 7 and it is stable a fast. I see google and just another freebe OS unless they stay with it. This is what Microsoft does. They will be hard to beat but if anyone could it would be Google. An easy install is what is needed for end users (hard install would mean its death from the begining)and compatible with all other OS so the average user can install it next to Windows.

    • Fredo says:

have you installed any linux flavor recently???
my computer-illiterate grandmother can set up any linux distro and mind you.. on usb stick ;)
seriously, it’s that easy… take a couple minutes to read up on the matter on ubuntu’s site and you’ll see for yourself.
