Google Operating System: Will you Download?

By: Peter Chubb | July 8, 2009 | 88 Comments

We mentioned this morning in an earlier post that Google announced that they are to launch Google Chrome OS some time in 2010. Google Chrome is a browser and is used by millions around the world; this is because it performs much faster than Internet Explorer.

Google thought that they would build from this and offer an Operating System version of its popular browser. The open source code for Chrome OS will be released towards the end of 2009, which is perfect timing for when Microsoft launches Windows 7.

Those who purchase a desktop PC or Netbook in 2010 will not have the choice of what OS they wish to run, but what one would you choose. Most might say that they will stick with Windows as they feel safe with the software, but it is no secret that Windows always have problems and hogs so much system resources.

It will be interesting to see how much faster a PC or Netbook will perform while running Google Chrome OS.

I can’t wait!! After Microsoft monopolizing PCs for so long with a flawed system I’m looking forward to a new operating system. After all, it can’t be worse than Windows!

  • RealityBites

This is not a useful question. It is like asking “if there is an accident will you look?” the question should be something like “will you switch?”

hello!!! I am clkwong@ . I love Microsoft , Apple and Linux operating system because I have choosed for my personal computer. It is great for Google to make another operating system in Intel PC. that means more softwares will be created for the end-user espeically for home business users which means that more moeny to be maken by computer software industry. And one more important and valued traits is that at least two computer should be purchased in home for two different operating system in home. Are you get the point???
More computer hardware will be sold.

I hope Chrome is a easier to use Linux. (The problem I have with LINUX is loading new programs) I have played around with Freespire, Puppy (this can be installed on a flash drive), Fedora, and some of the other Linux OS. I am impressed. I haven’t bought a new computer because of manufacturers not releasing motherboard drivers for XP, so I still use a 2.2 ghz Athalon64 socket 754 from 04. I think it is fitting for someone to piss in MS’s cornflakes, because they have been so arrogant about sticking VISTA down our throats. After all MS’s BS, VISTA is not as good as XP. I should have my choice of OS on a computer I pay for.

  • steve

This will be great as long as hardware makers support it with drivers. That’s been the problem with Linux, but maybe Google with have better luck. I’m more and more getting away from M$ and into Linux. Apple is way too expensive, so any thing that runs an a generic Intel platform will be for ME!!

  • Steve

Looking forward to trying out the new OS. Will it be able to use open source software such as open office? Or is this intended to solidify Google’s hold on web based applications only?

How will it compare to Ubuntu, the Linux distro that’s is leading the fight against Micros**t?

  • http://quitegood malik

Hell , we need to get free from cops knocking your door for bill gates. please google hurry up , imagine someone paying 80 dollars for windows in third world where it take 6 months to earn it.

  • Alex Wyatt

Having tested Windows 7 through various stages of its development and been VERY impressed I cannot wait to see what the Google OS turns out to be like. Win 7 will kill Vista stone dead (and about time too!) Hopefully Google have looked at ALL of the very many flaws in Windows (whichever version) and will release a product that works, is pleasing to look at and functional/customisable for those who wish to tweak. Good luck Google!

  • Chris

I have the RC of Windows 7 and it is stable a fast. I see google and just another freebe OS unless they stay with it. This is what Microsoft does. They will be hard to beat but if anyone could it would be Google. An easy install is what is needed for end users (hard install would mean its death from the begining)and compatible with all other OS so the average user can install it next to Windows.

  • LorexBud

I am very excited about the new Google Chrome OS that will rival MS. Many corporations grow so large they lose sight of the needs of their customers. They become arrogant! (Google is an exception!) Customer service becomes a shamble! One morning these giants wake to find they have been abandoned and can’t understand why. Their mighty empire starts to crumble! Take heed MS! You shoved Vista down peoples throats and they are not happy with this product!!! I hope Google Chrome OS will be a bare bones OS and allow the people choose the add-ins they need or want.

  • Mike

I’m pretty excited about this, and pensive at the same time. I expect the OS to be streamline and fast, but am kind of nervous about the concept of running applications in-the-cloud. I’m also curious as to whether the system will even allow local file storage or if it will insist upon storing files on google servers. This would get annoying if, say, your internet connection went out. Internet connections are not flawless things, and it seems as if the OS will rely too heartily on a bulletproof connection.

And having the OS available for beta-testing would be great. But hey, they’re releasing the source code later this year and i’m SURE someone will compile and distribute it, so we won’t have to wait until mid-2010 (i would assume).

I also agree though that it would be best if it were fully released and shipping out on systems before Windows 7 (which is probably going to be April 2010).

And in case anyone is curious, i’m currently beta-testing windows 7 and it too is a huge system hog (though not quite as bad as Vista). It’s very annoying to use, because it thinks i’m an idiot and warns me before everything i do. It also seems to think that ie8 is constantly crashing because it keeps trying to recover webpages that are clearly just trying to load. I usually only have to wait about 10 seconds and the warning goes away because windows finally realizes it’s not a page-crash, it’s just taking forever because the windows kernel eats up 90% of my RAM (which, btw, is admittedly only 1gb because a chip went bad recently).

ok, i’m done typing for now.

It’s way to early to determine whether a switch is advisable. Probably for may computer professionals, often dependent on customized Windoze software, switching will be impossible, at least for a few years.

OTOH, for folks beginning to use computers, this could be a low-priced easy to use option that will make computers like appliences, spurring a slow ramp-up of serious adoption, at which point it *may* become mainstream.

    Time will tell.

In the mean time, I’ll load it on a secondary PC, along with some of my Linux explorations.

  • John Hawklyn

I’ll bet the Chrome OS will be MUCH simpler than Linux. I’m apprehensive that like the Chrome browser, it will be so much more simpler, like an appliance, that power users won’t have much down and dirty command-line controls.

Look at what Google has done with the Chrome Browser as compared with the Firefox browser… I suspect that pattern to be followed.

  • http://facebook/Davecartoon.com Afordoanyi

i am happy Google is taking these positive steps to solving our surfing/browsing predicaments.

  • Rob

Dude, the point is that we need something fresh. I am reluctant to bring up NEXT BUT Apple has the the right of way because it is NEW. Microsoft needs to go back to the drawing board, but they won’t. What Google brings to the table (hopefully) is NEW, FRESH, FAST. They know what is needed and can ACCOMPLISH it because they don’t have 20 years of backwards compliance ISSUES. Yet, we will see. I do agree with Chris, I too am running Windows 7 and it is STABLE. But the interface is ridiculous. Especially in the Control Panel(Black Hole) area and Task Bar – WTF. All they needed to do with Windows XP is make it faster and prettier and I would have been on board. I have no idea what they where thinking.

Hello! I am anticipating the release too, but I think it will not beat MS. XP is good and I personally am typing this on a PC with a tri-boot of Vista, 7 and Ubuntu 9.04 that has a 1.98 Core 2 Duo, 2 gigs of RAM, a 320 gb SATA hard drive and a 80 gb IDE drive. And soon as I can compile the new OS, I will run it too.

I want this operating system now.

Is this about Microsoft vs,,,,,,Google or Linux or XYZ or is this about a company creating a better more modern way of doing something. Like the iPhone…each individual part of the iPhone is not special, but put all the technologies together and make it useful that is what seperates the men from the boys…. The average person does not use an operating system! They just want to run an application whether for business or pleasure…So the question is what is this going to offer the average person way beyond what Windows offers? Forget about who the company is and is it going to be reliable…(yes that is important) but first focus on why is this going to be a killer OS for me to switch. Is this going to be best used on a desktop or more for mobility? Is this anticipating the roll-out of WiMax or LTE?

I’m growing very excited for the new Google’s OS… I’m also getting allot of customers who really hate windows and find Mac a bit of a challenge… So the up and coming event with Google is going to a very bright change for allot of PC users who really are tired having to buy a new OS(Windows every 3 Years)it seems…

Ofcourse i will download and install google operating system. Google has been servicing us since many years and it has solution for all our problems deffinately its operating system will be more user friendly than any other operating system similar to its search engine

  • Trigger

If you guys are so excited about Chrome OS, why haven’t you checked out other Linux distros like Ubuntu (www.ubuntu.com)? They don’t hog resources like Windows, and try not to limit like Apple.

  • Asad

i am using Ubuntu, its great very good. but wud love to try Google chrome. it should have to be much secure from virus or spywares, fast, easy installed, and must have good visuals then it can beat other operating systems. it should be best in all aspects as people have already so much expectations, otherwise it wud be hard for them to keep up….

  • Jeddy

Microsoft’s decades of market manipulation are over. Linux, Unix, Chrome OS, Mac OSX, bring it on …

I’m sick of my viral and malware vulnerable operating system — XP.

    Change is good

  • harry

With all respect , i think that we definitely need a beta to try it out, but on the other hand it shouldn’t be released before 7 so they could improve and learn from “their” bugs as well…

  • nishant

I hate microsoft products because all come with lot of bugs and many patch and service pack for these bugs.i am waiting for google os.best of luck google.

  • Shiva Prasad

    Hi Admin,

Yes, I have tried the windows 7 which is awesome. I request you to give the links of Google Chrome operating system if the OS is released or the BETA version release….

But, the thing is windows 7 is entirely different from that of windows Vista the latest version i.e 2009 with SP2…

The main difference between both the operating systems is that there is DREAMSCENE CONTENT in windows Vista 2009 with SP1 and as well as in SP2 and there is moving desktop in the Windows 7, which we do not have in Windows Vista SP1 or 2.

I request you th let me know the release dates of Google Chrome Operating system…

    Anxiously awaiting for the OS…

    Bye,

    Regards,
    Shiva.

I am all for trying it. I bought a laptop and it came with Vista pre installed. Goes without saying I deleted and installed a copy of XP instead. It really pisses me off that Microsoft have such a monopoly and there isn’t another easy to install option. I don’t think that I would mind as much if there was a choice of Operating Systems to buy with your PC. Windows is a great platform and really did start the PC revolution going. But there should be competition and I hope Google Chrome will be the one to knock windows off it’s perch!

  • MSandeepK

I have a netbook with Windows XP pre installed. Iam looking for an OS which could perform better than windows XP. As I know the issues I face by using Windows XP on a net book. I will download Google Chrome OS and install.

I would be happy if Chrome OS supports most of the applications which I install on windows can be installed on Chrome.

    Waiting for Google Chrome OS,
    Sandeep M.

I see you never mentioned using Ubuntu within the linux distros, if you haven’t tried, i would strongly advise giving it a shot. As for the Linux Based OS from our friends at google, just take a look at the android OS for the G1 phone, that should give us all an idea as to what google could have in store for us as an OS in the near future, and John, you are VERY right, made by google, should be waaaaayyy simpler than any other linux distro.

dudes i think its possible that google can improve its self by designing a strong opreating system that based from linux or windows xp ( not the fucking 7 or vista ) so they can build the system basing from information of two most advanced powerful system on the planet

My stronest suggestions is to get rid of Microsofts blunder OS’s, from XT tp 7. To much of HD spage is being used, it crashes often. In other words it need to be sold to Osama. He hill definitely nuke it. I am very excited about replacing my MS os’s wis Googles new OS.

  • David

I really am excited to see what they are going to come up with. I have a box waiting for the release. I am sure, since it is based on the same linux kernal and chrome background, it will be great. Can’t wait.

  • Paul

    Hi all.

I have been using Windows 7 build 7100 for months and have to say it runs well on my old MSI M670 note book with no reportable problems todate….

  • Marion

I hope the new Chrome OS is very light and it is less dependent on having to support so many device drivers. The drivers are what slows down a system and complicates everything else on the operating system. If Android is any clue to what Chrome OS is going to be, I just hope Google gets it right for the desktop. Desktops OS don’t need to be the client hogs that we are accustom to or all too familiar with(i.e Windows).
Ubuntu is a great desktop, but I see too many dependencies being added and has become less easier to manage. Canonical needs to look at Ubuntu from outside-of-the-box and see if it’s heading towards bloatware. I’m sure they are far from it, but they still need to analyze the Ubuntu road-map.
I hope Chrome OS gets it right and stays light!

I think this is great. Like someone said below, if anyone can beat windows, it would be Google. I was thinking of switching from windows to Mac but I may just wait for the Google OS to give that a shot first. I want to weigh all of my options and look at the pros and cons before I purchase a Mac.

good luck, thank for try to get off us from windows ghost

  • http://blog.mind-fields.com Fredo

You are correct! Ubuntu and it’s derivatives rock! Amazingly easy to use and for those ppl who really can’t be without MS and specially now that computers come loaded with RAM and hd space, why not use Virtual Box. It’s relatively simple… an OS inside another… I do that for the apps that only exist on Windows.
OTOH, I’m not so sure simple is good… for those of us who need more control and love to get down and dirty with their machines, this isn’t the way to go… there are still a lot of n00bs hence probably why they chose this road.

    my 2 cents

  • http://blog.mind-fields.com Fredo

have you installed any linux flavor recently???
my computer-illiterate grandmother can set up any linux distro and mind you.. on usb stick ;)

I’d like to be very honest: Instead of bullshitting around all day about Google Chrome OS, we should do everything necessary to enable all interested people (like me) to prepare themselves for that most important moment of downloading Google Chrome OS. The more we know in advance about all features and the possibilities of installation (e.g. concurrently with our old MS rubbish-systems, and other specialties), the better and easier will be the start-up with this new OS. Thank you all for good advices !!!
We are very happy about the fact that we can soon get rid of the black-mailing stuff coming from Microsoft…

  • http://none Jim

I would only caution that if everyone (which they will not) were to opt in to a google operating system, they would be at the mercy of Google to start charging a fee and then increasing the charge whenever they saw fit. Good Idea but with massive caveat.

  • Nathaniel

This poll taken is skewed. You can’t have a poll on a page that is specifically about Google OS. Mainly only people looking for information about Google OS are going to find the page. It is not a good cross section of the people that use the internet, which is who you should be polling.
