ArsTechnica are reporting that a Linux developer has created a new kernel patch which could possibly allow the FAT filesystem on Linux without paying Microsoft licensing fees. At this time it is still unconfirmed whether or not this will defiantly not infringe Microsoft patents, we will keep you updated as we find out more.
The person who created the patch is called Andrew Tridgell, he is currently one of the developers behind the Samba project, this is the second patch he has created to try and workaround Microsoft’s patents. The first patch did work however it provided too many limitations for users, such as not allowing long file names.
For a detailed look into how this patch works be sure to check out ArsTechnica.
