Star Trek-like translator
By: Peter Chubb | July 1, 2009 | Leave a CommentWe are all familiar with the universal translator from Star trek, well this technology might not be as farfetched as we thought, as it could be coming to our smartphones soon. Dial Directions and Sakhr Software Co. have now merged and with it comes a new technology that will turn your Apple iPhone, RIM BlackBerry and Windows Mobile device into a voice and text translator.
Computer World explains that in the past, Dial Directions developed software that offered voice activation and recognition software; this has been used to offer driving directions via a cell phone. Sakhr has been making Arabic speech and language technology for the U.S. government, and other customers.
The new voice and text translation application for your cell phone enable users to speak in English or Arabic, that speech is then translated into speech. As this is still new technology the results are not real time, but it is a start. We are certain that as time goes on the technology will become much better, as well as a choice for a number of other languages.
