China’s controversial Web-filtering scheme
By: Peter Chubb | July 1, 2009 | Leave a CommentPC makers received some good news yesterday, as China has delayed the implementation of a Web-filtering scheme. The reason for the delay in the controversial scheme was due to problems with meeting today’s deadline.
According to The Wall Street Journal, once the controversial scheme is up and running all PCs sold in China will have to come with the Green Dam software. PC manufacturers faced the tough task of making certain that the software was pre-installed, which means that they will have to disrupt its supply chains, which up until now is finely tuned.
There is a problem with Green Dam; it does not work on Apple computers, and it is not certain if they too will have to meet requirements by the deadline date. There are fears that sections of green Dam have stolen intellectual property rights, the U.S. government have been pressuring the Chinese government to reconsider its decision on this controversial mandate.
