It is no secret that technology moves at an alarming rate, and the news that a new OLED mini projector is in development for cell phones proves just that. The reason that this has not been done in the past is because of the drain on the phones battery, but as OLED does not require an additional illumination system, this is seen to be the perfect solution.
There are two benefits to not having to run with an extra light source, the first is that less energy is required and the second is the OLED technology is much smaller than a standard projector. The prototype projector measures just 2.5 cm long, with a diameter of 1.8 cm.
According to Gizmag, the lenses being used in the prototype are made from glass, but Fraunhofer Institute development team is working on an optical system that replaces the glass with plastic lenses.
OLED is certainly the future, this technology is already in use in TVs, but it will be some time before there will be a large screen version, and one that a typical consumer will be able to afford.
