PS3 Firmware 3.0: Update bringing a completely new system

Exciting news for PS3 owners across the globe now as it has been recently revealed that Sony are planning to give the PS3 interface a complete makeover as part of a big pre-holiday firmware update.

That’s according to this PCWorld article, who have obtained the info from gaming site VG247. Apparently, the Playstation 3 firmware update 3.0 will be comparable to Microsoft’s ‘New Xbox Experience’, in terms of interface changes.

Other features that are said to be on the way include the ability to ‘rate players’, submit reports to Sony about disruptive players, download game patches in the background and the ability to submit screen captures.

Since the rumors broke though, Sony have stated that these are ‘completely untrue’ and are nothing but ‘pure speculation’. We’ve heard it all before though. Let us know your thoughts on the planned firmware update.

I hope it’s true, there are still plenty of features I would like to see added to the XMB.

Hopefully when they say it’s like the NXE update it means Home will be more tightly integrated into the XMB experience like the 360 Avatars – for a ‘must have’ application for gamers it seems a bit isolated and standalone at the moment…

How do we comment on complete conjecture? Be patient and see what happens, I guess. I very much enjoy the XMB but don’t partake in online gaming that much. As long as Sony listen to the customers then it’ll be fine.

Oh… (if we can’t already) can we be able to create custom folders for our games? I kinda want to organise things myself – with a bit more flexibility than currently available.

    • kratosgodofwar says:

You already can. Press triangle and go to information, then under the album, put in the name you want the folder to be and it will create a new folder for that game. Then if you want to put other games in there, just give them the same album name.

Mindless fanboys such as this poster are annoying.

      Wow….WOW….
okay… at least having basic punctuation would make that sound half good. Still nonsense. (end of my reply)

apart from that trash, I really hope they dont overhaul it to the point of the new xbox exp. cause that changed the interface completely. im pretty sure though they wont change the XMB, obviously its integrated into their tvs, phones(half ways) and the psp…

Is he drunk or just really stupid?
I don’t mean to sound like a fanboy or something but if anything ps3 is on its way up. the xbox has reached the top of its graphics capabilities while the ps3 is at about 60% and in the shorter time the ps3 has been out it has sold nearly as many consoles. I’m really looking forward to finding out if this update is true or not. :)

  4. bunimomike says:

Completely agree. Not only is it impossible to even decipher what the hell they’re on about but it can really ruin a place/website when they start to outweight the decent posts.

  5. Billy says:

This is true i just turned on my ps3 and today playstation network is down for major update.

  6. grant says:

can’t anyone have a decent conversation about games without immature fanboy trash talking obviously not eh ?

  7. Sash says:

What I would like to see is gameplay capture using video, If they add that, and screenshot capture, Id be happy. I also wouldn’t mind if they add the ability to play mp3s while gaming

    • Moorbs says:

thats up to the game creators really, on Killzone 2 you can play mp3s while online but i think they don’t want it to spoil the atmosphere created by the soundtrack they’ve chosen or made specifically.

  8. Sash says:

And ofcourse, I want to be able to play my old PS2 games

  9. Daniel says:

I have seen many people talking about the firmware update 3.0 for the ps3, but this is the first time i have heard of a interface change. This would be rather exciting as let’s face it the ps3’s XMB does look pretty dull (no offense sony). The main thing i think that they should include in the 3.0 update is the ability to play music stored on the hard drive during gameplay.

    Then i would be happy.

    • TheAlpha says:

What you on about, you can play music during gameplay??? At first it was only on selected games, but I’m pretty sure you can on most now. You definitely can on War Hawk and Paradice City.

  10. TheAlpha says:

What you on about, you’ve bin able to do that for ages?? Well you definitely can on WarHawk and Paradise City
