PS3 Slim Update: new hardware rumors

PS3 Slim Update: new hardware rumors

By: Peter Chubb | June 24, 2009 | 11 Comments

When the original 60 GB Sony PS3 first came on to the market, it had all that you ever wanted from a gaming system. The console had Wi-Fi, SACD support, flash card readers and backwards compatibility, but a couple of those are now missing. The reason for losing some of those features was its price, but Sony have been working hard to drive the price down for the console, and rumors of a PS3 Slim have been going in to overdrive just recently.

According to PS3center.net, Sony are doing everything they can to bring the price down, and no doubt they will remove any more unnecessary hardware that they do not think is needed on the PlayStation 3 Slim.

According to PS3center.net sources the PS3 Slim will be missing non-gaming features that can be found in the standard PS3, this includes stripping away support for other operating systems, as well as the on and off switch to the rear of the console.

Do you think that any of these rumors are true of a PS3 Slim?

Stripping away support for other OS? How the heck is that supposedly going to save money? It’s not a hardware feature, there’s no special hardware to make it happen. It’s all handled by the Hypervisor and firmware. Not to mention the OS in question is a build of Linux – the poster child for open source, free software. What a pointless rumor, and removing a rocker switch from the back to save money? Come on fellas, is it April first again? Good grief, that’s just pointless and dumb.

This article makes no sense and plus I think the person who wrote doesn’t understand what’s involved.

wow. i am SO glad i bought the ps3 when i did

Dude I bought the expensive 160gb version, let me say that the ps3 menus are broken and a retard would have written a better interface for browsing files, and the god damn blue ray drive BROKE after only 3 months of ownership, and sony has the nerve to expect me to pay to ship this heavy POS to them for service. Microsoft doesnt make you pay shipping for the Xbox service, they overnight express ship you a box with postage paid for you to put the xbox in, and this steaming pile of sony crap cost me 3 times as much as the xbox.

    Thanks a lot Sony.

ps3stinks: the problem with the interface (XrossMediaBar, XMB) is that it’s based on the psp. and the psp originally only had like 4 features (play an mp3, play a game, play a video, um, play another mp3) so when it was really simple the interface was perfect. now both the psp and the ps3 have way too many features now, the XMB is no longer sufficient. on a side note, i’ve had my psp and my ps3 since their original launches. they’re still pretty useless!

Actually, ive heard MS no longer covers that cost.

Still find the slim PS3 complete rubbish. Or at least when viewing that tired old box shot. Look at it! It looks a tenth as sexy. Has the finish of sandpaper and might be able to keep some paper from blowing away. I don’t doubt that the bods in the R&D department are looking how to reduce the form factor but would’ve thought their attention is still with reducing current production costs to reduce the console we see on sale at present.

A smaller version… maybe one day but this just constantly smacks of someone having a bit of fun in Photoshop.

Personally I have no problem with browsing the XMB or 360′s navigation. Sure, my Games list in XMB is close to 40 titles but it’s no chore to scroll through.

    *basks in glory* haha!

Seriously, thanks Adrian. Life is too important to miss out on the fun things and people take consoles way too seriously. All three current consoles are wonderful in their own unique way. Of course, they’re battling it out and, for now, Nintendo is spanking MS and Sony’s posterior (potentially with the Wii controller ;-) ) but both rivals have seen that casual gamers are just as important as the older hardcore enthusiasts.

MS rushed their console out to get the drop on Sony. It initially worked but the Red Ring Of Death did them zero favours. On the flip side, Sony wanted to create the console equivalent of a cancer cure. The cell and the blu-ray being both quite the investment (and gamble).

Nintendo turned up to the party with below-par graphics but an innovative way to play games. Note the “play games” bit. It’s still all about that.

In a way, it’s not only been a success financially but it’s shaken up the industry; reminding both MS and Sony that it’s still ALL ABOUT THE GAMES! Could the customer ever shout that enough? I don’t think so.

to ps3stinks. my ps3 broke and they com 2 my house in 3days and gith me a new 1 swoped and my m8s broke and they did same thing cost me nothing and i was way over my ps3 warranty go on google and put in ps3 warranty it says free replacment . so your just talking **** your a box fanboy u can tell 100% sony very good 4 stuff like that were not talking about M$ here they suck 4 stuff like that

  • Aaron

Yes and if they did this, Its means you know have two systems on the market (the old ps3) and the new slim models using two diffrent firmware software, one which has the install os option the other which does not. this to me seems like it would cost sony more money,
