New PS3 Firmware 2.80 Update Confirmed

Sony has confirmed the launch its new PS3 Firmware 2.80 Update, which is now available today. Do not get too excited over the new update though, as it is just a basic update as no major additions or fixes have been issued in this latest firmware.

There are a handful of fixes though, this should help to improve performance of Trophy synchronization as well as increase the speed of XMB loads. According to The Examiner, they were still on conformation from Sony, but we have just learned that PS3 Firmware 2.80 Update has now gone live.

There is a rumor that the new update will bring with it a new feature to the messaging and game invite system; however, this has yet to be confirmed. All these firmware updates are now making the PS3 a better media streamer than Xbox 360.

Why not download the firmware update down, then comment below to let us know what improvements and new features you see.

PS3 has ALWAYS been a better media streamer than my 360. I wouldn’t let it anywhere near the Big screen TV in the living room, the 360 is simply too noisy.

The PS3 gets pride of place in my house, in short, because it does everything in one box, and does it well. The 360 get resigned to the spare room, on the odd occasion there is something on it I want to play (which is getting rarer and rarer these days).

I really like how it’s going. The only thing I really think needs 2 be done 2 the Playstation is the ability 2 be able 2 play your own music while you play your fav games. That by far would be a big jump over an Xbox 360. Please take thought of this. Thank you!.

How about private voice chats with friends while in game so I don’t have to listen to children scream swear words? It’s cool to have voice chat but I’m not going to use the PS3 and sit at my tv just to talk to friends that I could call on my cell.

erm, u can in some games like warhawk, supersonic areobatic rocket powerd battle cars and mspr

Unfortunately, that feature has been copyright-ed or patented by Microsoft, I do find a few games like SF4 able to play music content while playing though.

the only time my 360 got more use then my PS3 was the 1st year the PS3 was out. i only had one game for it while i had 8 games for my 360 and 10 games for my Wii. Then my 360 RROD a number of times, got the E74 error after the NXE update and then finally the RROD again and MS stopped servicing it. Now as with every generation of Sony consoles, i have 23 PS3 games, 6 Wii games and Zero 360 games(sold them all after throwing my 360 away). The PS3 has come aloooooooooooong way since the 1st year. Its now the dominate media device in my home. Whether im playing games or downloading movies and TV shows the PSN or watching a Blue Ray film on my 52″. My PS3 went from getting hardly any use the 1st year i had it to about 4 to 6 hours of use almost every night. Every generation my Sony collection started out slow but as time went on the exclusive software for Sony far our paced my Nintendo and MS collections. By the time previous generation ended i had 62 PS2 games and 4 Xbox games and maybe 3 N64 games. Sony always ends up the winner every generation, i think were seeing the beginning of the end of the 360s dominance this time around.

Re: playing music while playing games. Killzone 2 allows this while playing online. Just select the xmb and a music track or playlist and you’re good to go.

Nice. ill check that out. I know when the 1st PodCast for MGS4 was posted, Ryan Payton mentioned being able to play your music stored on your hard drive using the ingame iPod. but it never happened. i wonder why?

Hmmm really not a substantial update and it leaves me wondering why it recieved the update title of 2.80 instead of something more apropriate like 2.77…. but regardless any improvement is an improvement i suppose but as usual sony has failed to keep the majority of its customers happy including myself

the exclusion of a few features including but not exclusively “In-game/X-game Voice Chat”, “Organised Friends Lists”, “More Party Features”, “Better Online Profiles”, “Flash Drive Updates”, “Radio Streaming Ability” and of course “Ability to Play Stored Music on ALL Games” are just a few of themust have updates by the time the very much anticipated (By Myself) v3.0 update comes round.

I often see people complain about the XMB but personally i have no quarrels with it… the real thing which bothers me about the PS3 and Sony is its ability to put so much effort in to add-ons which (lets face it) no one need…. I mean Playstation Home? who are we kidding…. meet friends online and then be completely unable to have a civilised voice chat with them whilst using your system for its designed and primary purpose (playing games) without being interuppted by a child or forgein person who feels its nesecarry to braodcast loud music and/or there immature screams as they get there ass handed to them at the game in question….

anyway im ranting and dont like to… but really Sony need to get real…. at present would prefer to play my PS3 on my 32″ HD-TV but I just cant as I have a fantastic Microsoft based product…. and no its not a Xbox… its my PC which caters to all my needs including personal profiles and chats… only thing it needs is a blu ray player but why by another one?

so to sum it up Sony are only intrested in pretending to potential customers that there the best and once you spend your initial sum of money buying the console and a game or two they dont give a shit butthats life I suppose

I also think we are entering the Sony years again, and i hope the devs who got thorny at the start get their just desserts, as a few people have stated, my 360 seems to be getting less use as time goes on. MS would be well advised to use the rent theyve RAKED in and bring something better out.

  6. Mike says:

ya i wish u can talk to friends while playing, bc 360 has it and i like it. and u guys should make the online better

  7. The Crack Man says:

I owned my PS3 for 1hr before I committed it to an update. During that hour I had the ability to play all of my media via a Movie Network I have in my house. After the upday I could only play 1 movie. I have high hopes that this is getting fixed and I can only hope it was fixed with this update. Does anyone have feedback atating if the new update has resolved this, or if Sony is showing any sign they will fix the issue.
