IPhone 3GS: Waiting for activation and availability

IPhone 3GS: Waiting for activation and availability

By: Daniel Chubb | June 20, 2009 | 24 Comments

Many of the early buyers never saw a problem when activating their nice new iPhone 3GS, but for some it has been a nightmare.

We have had reports of problems with Apple iPhone 3GS activation, and some users have been waiting for activation over an hour. Many gadget fans crave for instant gratification, and this is something that was not happening when it came to activation.

The new iPhone 3G S has a lot to offer like video recording and voice controlling, so the “Waiting for activation. This may take some time” message is sure to rub people up the wrong way.

One of the LA Times news reporters had this very problem with their iPhone, and they called Apple to find out what’s happening. They were told that after the online setup, some users might have to wait a few hours for their iPhone 3GS to find the network.

The new iPhone in 2009 has been much easier to get hold of than the iPhone 3G in 2008; although we are not sure if there was more availability or this was down to less demand.

It’s true! I waited for about three hours before my iphone 3gs was activated. All around me people’s phones were activated instantly, and had me worried my phone was faulty. It’s all good now though, I’m enjoying my 3g speeds :D

Forgot to mention; I just walked into an apple store after visiting best buy and an att store and after about ten minutes in line (during which apple gave us snacks) I was in the store purchasing :)

After waiting about an hour for phone to activate, I called my carrier and found out that phone would not activate until agreeing to the new contract via automated system. After doing this the phone activated within 5 minutes.

Your new sim card has to be activated by your carrier before your iPhone will be activated. I was advised this when I called o2 about the “waiting for activation” problem.

    I got mine today.
It’s been hours and stillnot activating.
I phoned O2 and they said to out in the sim that came with the phone, but I didn’t get on. I’ve only got my old (none 3G) sim.
I’m going to the O2 shop to throw it at them tomorrow.

From an email I received from AT&T:

To activate your wireless device & service, you must follow these steps IN ORDER:

Step 1 – Charge your phone – for best results, leave your phone OFF

Step 2 – Activate New iPhone using iTunes
    • Download and install iTunes
    • Connect your iPhone 3G to your PC or Mac
    • Follow the instructions in iTunes

Step 3– Check for unheard voicemail messages and write down any important information.
    • Once activated, all messages and greetings will be lost.

Step 4 – Activate Your Service

    Learn how

or call 1-866-895-1099 from another phone
    • Be Ready to give the wireless number you want to activate, the account holder’s SSN and shipping zip code

Step 5 – Turn New iPhone ON & Make a Test Call
    • If your test call is not successful, call 1-866-391-0749 from another phone

I hope this is helpful to some.

Hiya, this is sooooo frustrating! I ought mine on a Sunday and it wasn’t till tuesday that I got mine working. I tried the lot: leaving it off/ on, removing sim etc etc.
What I did to get mine working was ridicuously simple: dismiss the message n go into Settings, General Settings, scroll down to the bottom and choose Reset. At the top choose the Reset All button. Says are you sure about this etc keep going and it will turn itself off then start up again n just leave it to do it. It should then search for a signal and once found a message pops up saying iPhone activated :D I then got texts through from my network but this may differ depending on your network.
It’s worth a try as it worked for mine, I’m writing this on my iPhone ironically lol. It is definately worth the wait as it’s an awesome gadget!!
Good luck hope it works out xxx

I bought this on Ebay this week. Had the same error "Waiting for Activation". Took it to Apple Store and they could not resolve it. They have replaced the phone immediately without asking any proof of purchase. Also they gave me a receipt for the new phone. They are helpful. Try visiting Apple store.

I bought a iPhone 3gs today on pay as you go. I set it up on itunes and then inserted my sim card and activated it. So I thought. I did this round about 13.00. It is now 20.30 – and there is still no difference. It still states waiting for activation, this make time some time. There is the option to dimiss but i'm like what?
I phoned up orange (that's the sim card i've got) and the woman said that it can take up to 24hours to recieve texts, read them, delete them, turn your phone off and then back on again and it should be ready to go? I was like ok then, she then said on her end that my account was active. I'm so not used to new gadgets like the iPhone 3gs, but I guess i'm just on of the unlucky ones.
