O2 iPhone 3.0 MMS problems explained and charges

By: Daniel Chubb | June 18, 2009 | 20 Comments

We posted a video today that shows you how to send an MMS on iPhone 3.0, although this is not much good if your not able to do this yet on AT&T or O2 are having problems at sending MMS on the new iPhone 3.0 software.

We have heard a few reasons why this may be but one of the best explanations about O2 and MMS on iPhone 3.0 was reported by one of our users who apparently contacted O2.

This is the tip that they left on PR News and it explains a little why you may not want to keep trying to send MMS.

I have spoken to a contact of mine at O2 this morning. The MMS fault is an Apple problem and not a network problem. That is why most people (me included) got the “Your MMS is up and running” message from O2 immediately after upgrading to 3.0 and it probably worked once or twice. This is a provisioning issue to be resolved by Apple and will most likely require you to re-install 3.0 when they find a fix.
DO NOT KEEP TRYING THOUGH BECAUSE THE NETWORK THINKS YOU ARE SUCCESSFULLY SENDING MESSAGES AND WILL DEDUCT FROM YOUR ALLOWANCE. ALSO, SENDING MMS TO 1010 WILL MAKE NO DIFFERENCE AT THE MOMENT IM AFRAID. WAIT 24 HOURS AND PLUG IN TO ITUNES TO SEE IF IT OFFERS YOU AN UPDATE.
Hope this helps.

So can this really be Apple’s fault and not O2’s, and if true we would imagine a lot of users have been charged for MMS messages that failed. Lets hope that’s more rumor than fact. Feel free to let us know your views on MMS and iPhone 3.0 in the comments.

Just got a message from O2 – They ‘know that I am waiting for MMS to be setup’ they are working as fast as they can to get it working

  • Michael

I’ve just recieved a text from 1010 saying they are having problems setting up mms but that within a few hours I should recieve a text saying it’s up and running, I don’t think it’s the iPhones fault just o2 not thinking forward and activating mms on every iPhone o2 account before the launch date of 3.0. Another o2 cockup.

    The story above is incorrect.

There is no such issue with MMS. We (O2) have had a huge number of requests for MMS activiation since the 3.0 software became available last night. Customers are being successfully processed and we are confident that everyone who downloaded the software last night will be able to use the MMS service later on today.

    Thanks,
    O2 Press Office

I have an AT&T iPhone 3g. I installed the 3.0 update yesterday and I still can’t send an mms… Does anyone know how to send one? Or is this an apple issue

  • Albert

I have the same problem – i dont have that camera icon too. And Im expecting that apple will figure out this as soon as they find out that many have the same issue

O2 are currently experiencing an MMS problem whereby the message is received by recipient, by if is showing from a completely different number than the one it was sent by. I spoke with o2 who advised I was a network problem and to rese my iPhone and wait 24 hours. I did the reset and everything is working ok again now. Was interesting for the person who received the replies from the recipients of my original MMS’s.

    Folks,

I upgraded iphone to 3.0 yesterday.
I asked my friend of mine to send an mms message.
But I didnt recieve it directly on the messages but asusual i need to log on to website to view the pictures.

Also Is there any one who can tell me step by step procedure to send/recieve MMS?
Am I missing something or is it the problem of AT&T /Apple?

  • RobSaint

I sent the MMS text to 1010 and got the reply that O2 will set up Picture messaging now and let me know when it is ready on the 20th. Still nothing… and no MMS working on my 3G. So what says ye O2 Press Office?!

I too do NOT have the camera button or the ability to send or receive MMS after updating to the 3.0 software.
Not seeing the icon to send pictures as shown on Apples site, I called Applecare as to why.
They said since AT&T was not ready that the icon will be available when the service is.
I asked when, as they both knew about the update for some time, they told me sometime this summer.
I hope a flood of Apple and AT&T workers come use my service, they can pay me up front and wait for the service until I am good and ready. Very LAME!

My husband and I just upgraded our phones last night. We both have the IPHONE 3G and upgraded to the 3.0. We have tried to send pics to each other and it is not working?? What is going on with this? Does anyone know?

  • carl

Having had the same problem of not being able to sent MMS’ I looked on the apple website and it says they will have it up and running ‘late summer’

  • Sara Brown

Definitely a problem, I could MMS within minutes of receiving the iphone 3GS and then it stopped on Friday and hasn’t worked since!

  • Gary

I did not see the camera icon, until I stopped the iPhone, and restarted it…

Well after numerous calls to AT&T and getting the famous, “well it is an ongoing issue and there is no fix time. Just keep trying and see what happens”, I waited a week and still nothing. Frustrated, I took a trip down to the AT&T retail store I was told by an AT&T associate that, “Well I haven’t heard of any problems with MMS on the Iphone. I think you should go to apple and check with them because it is not an AT&T problem”. By this point I was a little pissed, but what could I do. I then went home and gave Apple a call and spoke to an associate who walked me through the restore steps again, and still nothing. I called back and spoke with another associate at Apple, and after just a few moments of explaining what I did and that I spoke to AT&T with no success, he knew exactly what to do. He explained to me that the AT&T associate is mistaken and that it indeed was a AT&T problem. He told me that with the new carrier update there were some IMEI compatibility issues. He then called the AT&T after hours number and explained the situation for me. After about half an hour everything was solved and I am now able to send MMS on my iphone.

So basicly what it seems the fix is is that you will need to call AT&T and get the IMEI issue solved in the AT&T database. Then you will need to reset your network settings and when your phone reboots you will need to shut the phone off for 30 sec. Then you need to turn your phone on and MAKE A CALL. Apparently this step is a crucial one because the AT&T associate seemed to stress this point. After you make you call you should be able to send MMS on the Iphone. If this dose not work then you will need to contact AT&T again.

I think the worst part of all this is the fact that AT&T apparently knows about this issue because when I asked what was wrong the AT&T associate told me exactly what was wrong and exactly what the fix was, and they are not making this information public for everyone. It seemed like an easy fix because the longest part of the process seemed to be the waiting on the phone for someone to pickup. I am not sure who is at fault here, but I do know that AT&T says that it is an Apple issue because there is something with the Itunes update that is bad, and Apple says that it is an IMEI issue in the AT&T database. Whoever it is, someone needs to let everyone who is having this problem know what the fix is!!!

I was told by O2 customer services and technical support that O2 do not support MMS to South Africa / Vodacom. Interesting that it is left to the paying customer to resolve and yet no ownership is being taken by O2 / Apple (who together offer the customer a service). O2, what are you doing to resolve this with Apple for your customer…to ensure that your customers are indeed as you say ‘better connected@?
