IPhone 3.0 Problems Continue

IPhone 3.0 Problems Continue

By: Daniel Chubb | June 18, 2009 | 64 Comments

It seems that the Apple iPhone 3.0 and iPod Touch problems continue, we are getting numerous reports from our users with a variety of issues. Below you can see some of the latest, but this is just a snap shot.

I got it last night from US and it took about 3 hours to install! Lost a lot of album art too. Otherwise, the new search function is worth the 5 quid

It deleted all my text history, and my contacts. I also can’t send or receive pictures, movies, or audio files

I have nothing but trouble, the download was fine but then when I went to install it saying that I cant update cause it cant because the “iPhone activation server is temporarily unavailable”. Can someone help?

What a LEMON, iPhone 3.0 downgrade – The bad news is that the hyped download started at all. It would have been better had it not happened at all. Like so many, the useless voice memo app pushed all the other apps onto different pages. Equally, follow-on pages are full of blanks. Which bright spark decided to put the memo pad on page one?
3.0 is more like putting a child in a sweet shop and saying NO! So it has an updated Bluetooth, oh please! What’s the point? More to the point what are Apple afraid of by not using defacto standard Bluetooth for mobiles. I guess the good news is the CABLE from the phone does work (please note I said CABLE a piece of wire to make a data transfer connection) which means when I take a photo at least I can grab it with my PC and use my PC to share it via Bluetooth. However, that doesn’t generate revenue for Telcos does it – oh some good news is the Skype app still works.
I was really expecting something from 3.0, industry norms from Apple, but what I got was a messed up layout, the stupid assumption that I have Outlook (which should have been buried at birth) and more things that don’t work. Oh well, at least AudioBoo ( cool app ) is still fine and can be connected to my PC, via the line in cable I made, to record audio blogs.
I really wanted to be excited by 3.0; the only thing that made my blood boil was Apple continuing to think that they know best. Maybe someone should send me an MP3, oh sorry that should be QuickTime NOT, of the Apple brainwashing hymn, and then maybe I’ll start to understand why my partners Nokia can do more than my iPhone and be happy about that.

The problems downloading the new iPhone 3.0 software were expected, and we knew that some users would get problems after installing the new firmware. But how big a deal is this really when we think of the amount of users upgrading the OS?

I just updated my iPhone to Version 3.0, I have 2 problems, In settings WiFi says NO WIFI! I can’t access my wifi network. Also, In settings, General, Bluetooth: Unavailable, Now i can’t access my Bluetooth headset. Now I can’t drive and talk hands free. 06/18/09 5:00AM ET.

  • Don

The SMS icon is blank because it’s now the “messaging” icon. Through that app you’ll send SMS, MMS and audio

  • Scott

2 HUGE PROBLEMS!!!!! 1) In the phone app, when i select to call somebody from the recent tab, I CAN’T HANG UP!!! it goes to the home screen, with the “tap here to go to the call” or whatnot, but I tap there and it goes nowhere, meaning I have to hang up by rebooting?! 2) When i try to connect to the authenticated network at work, the screen that should pop up asking for username and password don’t. instead I get an error stating that there is an HTTP issue with the authentication. This update sucks!

  • IAN

I UPDATED today all whent ok. Till i got to work. I did`nt notice that i have two battery icons. one shows as 78% and the normal one. MMS working great. youtube and safari
    wifi working too.

  • Sam

iPhone 3.0 appears to have broken the VPN capabilities. My IPSEC VPN connections won’t hold passwords any more – and they won’t connect even when I enter the password at the prompt.

  • Kevin

My WI-FI is useless now!!!!! Worked perfectly before this 3.0 update

It either asks for a password (never needed one before) and won’t accept anything

Or does connect and then immediately disconnects

All my other computers are fine, so it’s definitely the iphone update causing the error`

Some one on another site has suggested click ‘forget this network’ and then find it again ?

Is that a good way around this ?

Have received a text saying ‘we are fixing your MMS soon’

So other things are not up to speed yet either

    Hope this is fixed soon

  • Isamu

If you have a Sim pin on your phone remove it before you download the new 3.0 OS. Lets just say i didnt and 18 hours later im still without my phone while i wait for my new 02 sim card to be set up!!!!

  • Jason

I updated my phone to 3.0 and I cannot see any of my contacts except for the groups! I have AT&T so I am not able to send mms just yet. Download was fine but updating took forever with the whole server problem!

  • Rajen

After I updated, I had two problems:
    1. SMS icon doent have any wording (that seems to have been solved by Don)
    2. I am able to connect to wifi but iPhone is not able to download any data in safari, map, weather, mail. it works fine with EDGE network though.

    anyone have issue like this?

  • Lynn

I downloaded 3.0 today and now my reception is garbled when I try to talk on the phone. I’ve called several people and had some call me, and it’s the same no matter who I try to talk to. GARBLED. What the ….. ????

  • James

No, problems, except i wasn’t apple to dowload new apps or app updates…It said I needed to agree to the new terms or something like that and when i clicked ok it took me to a blank page that said loading…but it never loaded and said there was an unknown error. However I tried again the next day and it loaded so I agree to these new terms and now it works :D . love the landscape texting and voice recording app. spotlight search is pretty cool, wish there was video though.

  • http://bgmcg.com Bryan

i’m having this same problem… geez.

  • rob

I updated my first gen iphone to firmware 3.0. Now, when i open the email app it checks for new mail and then closes. I have reboot but still no luck. it is so irritating that the new update is flawed. Workout the bugs before you release it.

  • susan

Installed the software yesterday. Today NONE of the touch screen functions work expect shut down. :/

  • Fernando

Man I downloaded the new software to my iPhone 3g 16 gigs and I still can’t send or recieve picture messeges it sucks I went to apple store located by my house n they didn’t help I tried downloadi g it again I still can’t send or recieve mms this sucks can anybody help me please I love my iPhone but this is one of the reasons I hate it

  • Matt humphreys

updated to 3.0 and could not use the phone at all. I mean no phone calls, sms, mms etc. i reset the network connections and all is ok but after a few hours the same thing keeps happening.

    Any ideas?

  • Rich

Ive lost two things with the update – all my sms message are gone, and secondly, the password now makes me input it all the time – in settings the ability to pick an amount of time to keep it open seems to have disappeared

    anyone else?

  • Ross

I installed OS 3.0 last night, charged the phone all night, and then removed it from power at about 7 AM. By 9 AM the phone was very warm and the battery was almost dead. It did go to sleep normally, but something must be going on in the background. I was hoping that this was a common problem so that it would be addressed right away, but haven’t seen any other postings about this yet…

  • Darryl

After downloading and installing iPhone 3.0 my phone re-booted into Danish. Very strange. Luckily I could figure out enough Danish to navigate through the settings to English. Luckily it didn’t set my default language to Korean or Chinese. Then I’d be in real trouble!

I also disconnected my phone this morning, after leaving it plugged in all night, to find that it didn’t charge at all and that my battery was down to 20%.

I also don’t like the fact that all my “purchased” app’s have been pushed off to another page leaving the 2nd page of app’s completely blank.

And furthermore… Why can’t we have the compass app with the 3.0 update?

All in all I like the new features including the voice memo app but cut, copy & paste as well as landscape mode in e-mail etc. should have been available from the release of the first iPhone or at least should have been added last June with the introduction of iPhone 3G.

  • Kevin

    WI-FI is fixed now

    I reset to original settings

found the network and clicked connect

    It asks for your password

Type in the WEP number from the bottom of your router

    and all is ok

Have to reconnect to my Bluetooth gadgets to but it is working

    MMS working as well now

    Good luck

  • Louise

Downloaded the new software two days ago- the battery life indicator is just constantly set on 100% so it will randomly die as I have no idea how much charge is left- any ideas??

  • atanu

have the same problem. wifi gets picked up, then either immediately disconnects, or disconnects a few minutes later. not a full disconnect either, the icon shows its connected, but it won’t let you go anywhere.
the rebooting lets you connect and browse again, so does forgetting network and connecting again. Until it disconnects and starts the cycle again.
I so wish i had not updated. i can’t help but wonder who are the bug testers apple used all this time, what on earth did they test anyway, if even wifi does not work?

  • atanu

Regarding your comment above, I can only presume you never bothered to change the router factory setting password, and left it as open before. Once you change it, obviously the one you need to put in is the one you changed it to. This does not solve the wifi drop off problem.

  • Darryl

In addition to my post above, after trying to charge my phone several times today I have found that my phone is getting hot, charging part way, taking a long time to do so, then depleting to 20% or less very quickly and I’m barely even using my phone.

    This is a MAJOR PROBLEM!!!!

Furthermore the phone is behaving very erratically!!!

While charging it will just pop on and ask me to enter my password. It does this every couple of minutes.

My iPod function also froze up, overall applications are VERY slow to load if they even load at all.

I also have been getting random foreign languages on my screen.

I am very disappointed in Apple. If there were just a couple little bugs here and there I could understand but right now my iPhone is completely undependable and if I can’t get the battery to charge and stay charged it is totally useless.

There are serious problems with this release and Apple should be ashamed of themselves for putting something out that is this problematic! This is stuff that should have been addressed during beta testing!

I am in the middle of a complete Restore. I hope this corrects my problems. Otherwise we have a serious problem on our hands!

  • Ryan

Lsamu I have a sim pin, but after the reboot I was able to enter the pin to unlock the phone and compleate the INS. My problem is that it will not allow me to send a voice memo. The MSG just Sita in the outbox until I delete it. Any ideas

on the ipod touch, the 3.0 OS is largely a bust. The performance of everything is noticeably slower to the point that scrolling in an app is choppy. normal wifi is fine but VPN use is broken. Not only does it not let you input a password into the config anymore thereby forcing authentication every time instead of retaining the password, but if you use the VPN your wifi shuts off about every 45 seconds and reconnects, which constantly causes internet operations to fail. I encourage others to hit bugreporter.apple.com and lodge their issues to speed up a 3.1 patch that fixes this albatross. Until then I think I’m upgrading back to 2.2.1 and demanding a refund for 3.0 since it’s faulty.

  • MO

Just did the update. So far the only thing I can find wrong with it is the inability to text pictures. Why is that?

  • Reece

    Hi,
Since I’ve updated to 3.0, I’ve had nothing but disappointment. Yes, the new features are good but what Apple forgot to mention is the fact that the phone becomes much slower and sometimes does not respond at all. Secondly, whilst powering on the device, between the Apple Logo and the Slide To Unlock screen, a black screen is seen for approximately 10-20 seconds. I really believe that Apple has not lived up to their standards with this update and a new update is required a.s.a.p to fix all of the above problems. Until then however, Is there any way to fix any of those?

  • http://www.performancedatamanagement.com Doug

    1. All but the basic app icons, were separated by a blank page after update and needed to be moved;
    2. PNC Bank App drops out right after login;
    3. When slecting Stocks App info would not update;
    4. Control panel did not fade out when viewing movie previews from iTunes;
    5. Search suggestions include e-mail info long since deleted;
    6. When Optimum WiFi was running Internet & e-mail contact did not work. Had to disable WiFi in favor of 3G;
    7. Who knows what else?

  • Troy Boy

I downloaded 3.0 and around 10:00 no sound was playing. Music played but no keyboard clicks, when someone calls no ringtone, and all these features are turned on in settings. My Iphone is only a week old. So thanks 3.0 for SCREWING up my new Iphone!!!!!!!!

  • Rick

Ok, I think I found the problem with the Wi-Fi not staying connected.

I have been connected about 20 minutes so far and what I did was go to Settings > Wi-Fi and when my Wi-Fi name was an option I refused it and removed it as available.

Then I left settings, and tried to open a Wi-Fi connection which naturally offered my network as an option. I accepted that network and entered my WEP key and it’s been working fine ever since. Actually the length of time it took me to type, proofread and correct this normally would have dropped my Wi-Fi long before now!

I hope this helps other with a very frustrating problem

  • Galerne

Downloaded and installed quick and easy, my contacts are fine, so is Wi-Fi. Problem arose in apps, Puzzle Quest lags to the point of unplayability, i lost sound in Ishoot, i can’t seem to access some links in a few web pages and a few apps just shut down on me at random for no reason. Other than that its going great, i get ZERO features i actually wanted, and stuff i really needed doesn’t work anymore.

  • George

I have the same problem too. Seems that the only option is to return the iPhone to an Apple store and have it replaced!

  • Geoff

Anyone having problems in SMS getting the send button to show the keyboard? I can look at my text history, but although I have the camera and send buttons at the bottom of the screen, the send button does nothing and doesn’t display the keyboard.

The only way I can get the keyboard up to send a text message is to start a new text every time!

  • foo

having the same problem on the new 3GS phone. deleting and re-adding account doesn’t help.

  • Jason

It doesn’t say SMS anymore as it’s SMS AND MMS

  • Jason

Well…. cut & paste is good, so is SMS on O2 in the UK, (90 seconds between the ‘we’re sorting it’ text and MMS up and running)

    Wifi however is a pain.

The signal strength is drastically lower than it was before updating, the range from my hub is hugely less and it takes an age to find it even when it’s nearby. Sky email doesn’t appear to be able to push to my phone either, so the option is yahoo mail or a costly mobile me account. No thanks to either.

The wifi is the worst it has been by far since I got my iPhone.

    Come on Apple, sharpen up.

  • Chuck

Can’t say for sure if this is 3.0 related but I am having connection issues with AT&T within my work building ever since the upgrade. Nothing has changed with my building and could always get a good 3G signal before. Anyone else having a similar issue? Also have had the turn data roaming on message a couple of times. I’ve always had it off in the past. Phone works fine outside so maybe it is the building? Or maybe something is up with the antenna? Thanks.

  • http://www.yahoo.com NickW79

Yep, I have the same problem too!! No Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and have tried all the suggested fixes to no avail!! Apple Store here I come..

  • Ross

Battery problems with iPhone 3G upgraded to OS 3.0 continue; phone runs hot and the battery dies within 90 minutes. After restoring the phone and reinstalling the backed-up software the problem was unchanged. Went to genius bar this afternoon and was told that they thought that maybe the problem was with certain third-party apps. So this evening I removed all of the apps via syncing only to find that the problem was perhaps even worse. Should I bother to restore it once again? Is that any different than removing the apps during syncing? Apple clearly has no idea what is going on; I’ll have to bail back to OS 2 until they get it together. If someone figures this out please post a solution!

  • AJ

Ok anybody got a solution for me?
My story: I downloaded it,tried updating it. Then it said it could not update because an unknown error has occured. Then it says to retry the update I have to restore it. So I restore it and then it still says the same message. Could not update iPhone firmware on “iPhone” because unknown error has occured(1013).

    So what now for me?

  • Apple User

The battery life has dropped to just a couple hours. The phone gets hot when it is not being used. My e-mail crashes the phone. The “update” has made my iPhone useless to me.

  • Jason R

My iPhone is now very slow. iTunes does not work and the app store takes minutes to load on a wifi connection. Also, while in the app store, updates that are showing up in iTunes will not show. My phone is vibrating well before I’m able to view my texts. I’m tempted to spend the two-hundred dollars to get the iPhone 3G S just to stop all of the problems.

And to anyone who wants to send MMS for free before AT&T will allow it: go into your photos, and click send (via email), or hold your finger on the photo until the “copy” button comes up. To send it to a verizon user, simply type the 10 digit phone number in the “to” box and include the suffix, @vzwpix.com

    Ex. 3025555826@vzwpix.com

The recipient will receive a standed MMS message that includes any picture you send at no expense to you

  • Mark

I have installed Apples 3.0 software and kool … the landscape mode now works with txt. However the screen only shows two lines. And to boot … it only uses half the screen since those bright engineers at Apple decided that received txt comes in on the left side and what you send shows on the right. This is now unnecessary because half of the critically needed available display space is wasted. I also have a weird problem with not being able to hang up after a call. The accellerometer most of the time doesn’t sense movement as you terminate the call. Time for Apple to go back to the drawing board and come up with a series of patches.

  • Jason R

Your best bet is to take it to your nearest apple store, let them know that your phone won’t update. They will do one of two things, switch your iPhone with a new one (possibly one that is already equipped with the update), or tell you the problem is with your computer. It is my experience that the latter rarely occurs. Most likely, if you have a problem with your iPhone that isn’t water induced, they’ll replace it as no cost to the owner. Hope this helps

  • Jason R

Everyone knows that when a company releases a new software, you are bound to have problem that even “specialists” can’t solve. When they released the iPhone 3G S, Apple was forced to provide 3G customers the chance to send and receive MMS. With that being said, the 3.0 firmware update was rushed into development and pushed onto market as soon as the 3G S hit the stores. By the end of the summer, Apple will have a resolution to the 3.0 update problems. Time will solve all, but if you are truly dissatisfied with the 3.0 to date, downgrading and waiting for the new software to surface couldn’t hurt.

  • Aneworanin

I am having the same wifi issues with this 3.0 ugrade. Hoping someone from Apple is reading this post.

  • Barb

NOW you have to tap the text box instead of the “send” key to get the keyboard to pop up.

  • Nigel C

I have been using 3.0 for about a week. Some of my experiences:

    1. generally seems to have slowed down the phone with many delays in the middle of the apps. Is certainly not as fluid as the old release and often feels sluggish

    2. Battery usage has accelerated considerably.
    3. It seems to lose the carrier network regularly
    4. Power on and power of are slower

I am running a simlock free 3G on Vodafone NL.

  • Nigel C

    Additionally:
    5. The phone will not hang up sometimes.

  • jason

I have the iPhone 2g or the first iPhone. ever since the update I found the phone to be hotter than normal. battery life has shortened. the other main problem is that the phone stopped working properly. when the phone is in sleep mode I am unable to receive calls. it only works right after I have used the phone app. I’m not pleased with this update

  • alfie dreifuss

Wifi on the the 3.0 update Sucks!!
Does’nt pickup wifi in usual rooms in my house…
    Why does’nt Apple fix this?
    Dorks!!!

  • Hussain

I upgraded IPhone 3.0. Everything works fine, just I noticed some problem with battery usage. Wh I use my phone and turn it off by pressing top power button, then everything is good. But when I receive any call and and after other party drops call my phone automatic goes power off. In this way it remains on somehow, because when I check the usage from Setting, it show me the time inclusive of the period of then and time I received the call.

This consumes the battery and by the night all battery drains.

Anyone has this kind of problem or check you iphone for this.

    Thanks

  • sandyshore

Here in the UK many of us (iphones 2.0 and 3 on the o2 mobile network are having major problems after the 3.0 software update. We are finding that we just cannot get an o2 signal anywhere and, if we do, it drops almost immediately.

What use is an iPhone that can’t be used as a phone – then it’s an iPod. Only difference we are paying £UK 35 per month for a phone that you can’t use as a phone.

This is a major mess up – heads should roll somewhere.

  • Ray

I have a nice issue. Well a couple that are related. When I’m in my car and the phone rings the bluetooth on my Nav system pops up the answer button but when I hit it the phone continues to ring even though the nav bluetooth app shows it answered. Also my wife called my cell phone earlier from her cell phone…and realized I wasn’t go to answer so she hung up and called me at home. I answered the home phone and looked over at my iphone and it was still ringing from her call minutes earlier. So I’m talking on the landline with her and the iphone still thinks she’s calling me. Blackberry is looking pretty good right now… It wouldn’t be so bad if they’d at least let you downgrade back to 2.2.1, but now I’m stuck with this until they get around to fixing it. It’s a phone guys, the PHONE part should be flawless…..

  • mee

WIFI Stopped working on my 3G once upgrade to 3.0. Made appt at apple store to which they said, “yes, this is a problem and the only fix is to wait for 3.1 and hope they fix it there. sorry.” They briefly checked the hardware and said it was all checking out ok. They also noted that even if they gave me a replacement phone, all their replacements had been updated to 3.0 and it was a one way upgrade, ie. cant revert without complete overhaul. So now we wait I guess. If anyone comes across fix, PLEASE post.

  • mee

I see that turn data roaming on occasionally too. I simply figured it was because of crappy service in the building at work. I also lost ability to connect to home wifi, to which Apple store simply acknowledged is a problem and instructed with regret that I simply have to wait for the next SW update to hopefully fix it. ugh.

  • Simon

After my 3.0 upgrade the phone is extremely sluggish, hangs much more often than before and it now won’t connect to iTunes. This may be unrelated as for some reason my iTunes is difficult to start up.

From the looks of it others don’t seem to have these problems?

  • Shafy

My batry is having problems lose charge 2x faster than 2.2.x on 3.0 so now it became like shit n bluetooth 2

  • Alaina

Two months ago I raised hell in my local apple store after a “genius” but no so much told me my phone had water damage in the middle of replacing it due to a broken silent button. So I got a replacement phone after which the “genius” was shaking and had broken out in hives. I downloaded the 3.0 software and I cant get any of my songs back on the phone. So I’d really like to figure out how to fix this without going back to the store.

  • Mulero

2)same problem with my iPhone, after upgrading OS 3.0 + also 3G does not work any more. WiFi is OK

  • Dutchie71

WiFi workaround: Change from DHCP to fixed IP address on your iPhone. Also change channel from Auto to 11 on your router. No wifi issues anymore. Never drops now and I have full strength all the time now!

  • Stewart

I am having this same problem on a new iPhone 3GS running iPhone OS 3.0. At my university we have to use VPN (PPTP) to get on the wireless network. My WiFi cuts off and instantaneously reconnects every minute or so, which is very annoying. My friend who has an iPhone 3G with iPhone OS 2.0 does not have this problem, and another friend has an iPhone 3G with iPhone OS 3.0 and he says he has not noticed this problem either. My university IT department changed my Encryption Level to Maximum but that has not had any effect. I am very annoyed by this bug, and I have not found much coverage or discussion of it on the web, but I’m glad to know I’m not the only one.
