How much is Tesla Motors worth on the open market?

Questions have been asked as to how much we think Telsa Motors are worth on the open market, and AutoBlog have said that this figure all depends on whom you ask. The website has said that if we work on the fact that Daimler paid $50 million for nine-percent of Tesla, then the automaker should be worth $550.

This is a different figure than the one that SharesPost have come up with, the company reckons that Telsa Motors is actually worth is actually worth around $1 billion. They came up with this figure with the help of Next Up Research, who it seems takes into account revenue that Tesla has made through the sale of its Roadster, along with future sales of its Tesla Model S, and Blue Star, its future electric vehicle.

Next Up has warned that there is a lot of risk when investing in a startup automaker like Tesla. One reason is because of their “lack of significant cost or performance advantage” over other more conventional sports cars. There is also expected to be a few safety issues with the use of their advanced lithium ion batteries.

Electric vehicles in general are high risk investment. I have a relative who works with electric commercial vehicles and he says that things are not good with the company due to the recession and technical problems. Sales are poor and potential customers want just to survive let alone invest in new technology. IMO battery technology has years to go before coming close to competing with the internal combustion engine. Batterys perform poorly in cold conditions. Just look at the state of your own computer lithium battery after just three years and there is also the question of residual values.
I havent heard anything about cars though – they may be a different kettle of fish.
