IPhone OS 3.0 : Background streamed internet radio

By: Peter Chubb | June 17, 2009 | 4 Comments

With just a few short hours until the iPhone 3.0 firmware software update is made available to download, we thought that we would take a look at a cool feature that the update will bring. The new OS will now allow you to stream internet radio in the background.

We already knew that the new IPhone OS 3.0 would allow for HTTP streaming video and audio, but we did not know that it would allow the streaming of HTTP audio to run in the background. This new feature will now allow an iPhone user to multi-task the Safari browser.

If you view Matt Raskin’s video below, you will see a simple demonstration of this internet audio streaming still working after the home button has been pressed. There is still one problem with this though; you have to go back in to the Safari browser to stop the audio.

Background HTTP audio streaming is already available in iPhone 2.2. Just try it :) . I can stream past BBC Radio 1 shows through Safari and return to my home screen with the music still playing.

really cool, hopefully it wont stutter about when more demanding apps are running (even the ipod bit currently does this, which makes me rather angry) but still very promising that these bits are getting opened up
