New iPhone 2009 3GS vs iPhone 3G with OS 3.0

New iPhone 2009 3GS vs iPhone 3G with OS 3.0

By: Daniel Chubb | June 12, 2009 | 9 Comments

The new iPhone 3GS – that’s also know as the 2009 iPhone – may be the fastest phone yet from Apple, but is it worth an upgrade for current iPhone 3G users.

We already featured some information on “Upgrade vs. New buyers”, but lets give you the basic info you need to make an informed decision. How does an iPhone 3G S compare to the second-generation phone with OS 3.0 software?

The new iPhone 3G S has improved performance, a digital compass, voice control and video recording, a 3-megapixel autofocus camera, and the new 32GB storage option.

Current iPhone 3G models may lack the above hardware, but they more than make up for it when you look at some of the main features in iPhone OS 3.0 that will be on both phones.

The new firmware will give the iPhone spotlight search, MMS (simple but lacking until now), peer-to-peer gaming, landscape keyboard, improved calendar, Internet tethering, shake to shuffle, stereo Bluetooth, Cut, Copy & Paste and a lot more that you can see here.

So are you really in a rush to upgrade and pay the big fees that come with ending your contract early or will OS 3.0 be enough for you?

I spent $600 for the 1st gen iPhone and felt snubbed then they dropped the price 6 months later. Got a 3G now so I’m staying put for now. It won’t be long before iPhones are in the bottom of cerial boxes. Cheers!

I got my 3G when my wife washed my Sony Walkman phone. I like my music. The original iphone and the two follow-ons seem to have the same music capability, except for the 32G on the “s”….For me, I’ll stick with what I have, although I really miss my built in FM on the Sony.

If I need a compass, I have one, use it with a map. We still teach 11 year old boys how to navigate in cub/boy scouts.

And Brad is right, for as much as cereal costs, they should throw in an iphone!

    Jerry,

You can install free apps which will play local radio and internet / international stations. I too will prob stick with the 3G with 3.0 software (as from tomorrow) I think this os upgrade will be as good as a new phone for now. As commneted maybe look around Xmas when the prices are slashed. However I have been offered £200 for my 16gb 3g so I am thinking about it still

Hahahaa!! Cereal boxes! That’s FUNNY! ;) I’ve been thinking about getting an iphone 3gs and I want to know – Can you download ANYTHING to your phone on any website? (Like with winmo and blackberry phones, smartphones in general etc.) OR is it just anything you want to pay for (and the selected “free” apps) from the itunes/apps section??? I don’t want to buy one of these phones and then be very disappointed once I have it! Also do you have to own a computer to do “everything” with it (updates, restoring, etc.) Thanks for all your help!! :)

Well, I have always been a nokia user. Never had a smart phone until my 25th birthday this year. This phone is golden and I am sticking with it but just upgrading the OS. It’s just like going from win xp to vista or . The only difference is that with this upgrade it will feel like a true upgrade! 
