Prototype Review for PS3

Prototype Review for PS3

By: Alan Ng | June 10, 2009 | 11 Comments

Prototype has just been released in North America yesterday, while the rest of the world is due to recieve the game in the few days. We have a review of the PS3 version for you to read now, courtesy of PS3Informer.

In their article, they explain about the types of powers that are available to the main character, Alex Mercer. Mercer is able to take memories, experiences, biomass and physical forms of the enemies through absorption.

The review praises the great concept within the game, stating that it’s really fun using all the different powers within the game as you take to the streets of New York throughout the game. They comment that the game has a lot of reply value, although disappointed with the lack of multiplayer element.

Take a read of the review in the link above and let us know your opinions on Prototype.

    Cor blimey, guvnor!

Just a couple of reviews on http://www.gamerankings.com but they’re very, very high. I’ve not heard of those particular PS3 sites but it bodes well. If this keeps up, we’re looking at InFamous calibre scores (MetaCritic and the above getting close to 90%) which is something to sit-up and pay attention to. Love that we’re finally getting some sandbox games that aren’t just GTA styled. Top stuff.

I’ve put about 90 hours into inFAMOUS and let me tell you; inFAMOUS is a must have. I give it a 9.7 out of 10. It’s a near perfect game, only losing a few points for the lack of in-game stat menu.

Now that Prototype is available I’m anctious to get my hands on a copy and see how it measures up against a juggernaut like inFAMOUS.

It will likely score higher than inFamous, simply because it’s a multi-platform title (reviewers always downrate PS3 exclusives at the request of Microsoft).

However, I expect Prototype to still be a inFamous wanna-be.

Personally, I thought Infamous was a great game, but not “near perfect”. If the two campaigns played out differently I would have given it higher regard. The fact that the story hardly deviates depending on if you’re good or bad was a let down for me. The NPC’s that inhabit the game world are PS2 quality and dumb as door nails. That said, it’s the best PS3 game I’ve played in a long time, but I’ve already sold it off. Once the campaign is beat on both sides, it gets pretty damn boring.

Prototype *seems* like it has a bit more variety when it comes to combat, and that I like. I also like how Alex parkours better than Cole. I always felt like I’m spamming the jump button in Infamous. Since a lot of this is done automatically in Prototype, I think it will have a slicker feel to the movement. I’ll know in about four hours when the damn game shop opens up!

some people are too naive to know that prototype is not an infamous wanna be simply because prototype was under construction alot longer than infamous was. If anything infamous copied prototype, people don’t realize this because infamous came out first. People also base their votes on graphics and not gameplay. to me that’s bull. In my opinion prototype tops infamous a thousand times over simply because of the gamplay.

    Hi Mak.

Could you provide some unbiased links to articles supporting what you’ve just said. It’s not that I don’t believe you but I’ve not read such a thing before. Be fascinating to see if the press is skewed over to MS because they bully (sorry… “persuade”) game-review sites to support them more.

I’m with Alfred… The game has been in development a lot longer than infamous, and I feel it the gameplay is a lot better…but that’s not saying the graphics don’t look amazing as well, I think prototype tops infamous by far, the idea is better, the gameplay is better, the graphics are better, and in my opinion the game is better…

I have just recieved my copy of prototype and the guy called chase must be smoking something. I only have two ps3 games Infamous and uncharted and i have about 16 Xbox games. Prototype is the ugliest games i have owned this gen. The graphics are poor, nowhere near Infamous. Also the controls are not as tight, you have to constantly lock on or else you kill countless people you had no intention to kill. It feels almost like it was rushed tbh.

No way near Infamous, I do think prototype is a good game but waaay to many problems with refresh rates, and graphics are honestly not good, bland and plain….The fighting is fun and packed with a lot if action but the blipping really kills the game. I gave infamous a 9.5 and Prototype a 6. You will see that the story and missions are boring and do not in anyway compare to a open world experience like GTA or Infamous. I played for about 8 hours and I am not compelled to turn on the game again, I’d rather play Infamous over again even after playing it twice good and evil.

The small-time game sites (and magazines) always seem to load the scores heavily so I’ll let the likes of Gamespot and IGN come into the mix.

Random aside: I find myself in-line with most of IGN’s reviews. They’re quite a bit more positive than Gamespot and it’s pretty much got me down to a tee. I’m fairly easy to please and not too cynical. I don’t nitpick with games (which some review sites really get stuck into) so IGN is often a very good yardstick for me.

People always complain about the graphics. Well, thanks to these average graphics, the framerate holds up remarkably. Considering all the commotion and what not that goes on throughout the game, the graphics are pretty impressive.

And I also think that Prototype was a much better game, I’m still playing it. And after playing through half the story on inFamous I was bored to the point of suicide.

People always said that infamous was better because of the better story (although I didn’t see anything special about it), I personally though that Prototype had a better story. But that’s not why I thought it was better, if I want a story, I could go get a book or watch a movie.

I thought Prototype was better because it delivered what I was looking for in a game: fun. And inFamous wasn’t any fun to me. And I also favored Alex Mercer over Cole, because Cole was a little wussbag to me. Alex was fighting the US Army, City full of Infected Mutants, Special Forces group, and Super Soldiers all at the same time. And Cole almost gets killed by some drug dealers wearing hoodies. That’s just pathetic.

Anyway, this is just my opinion. I hate it when one person says that one game is better than the other, it’s like they think their opinion is law. I don’t know but I think they should first say that it’s their personal opinion.
