PCMCIA: ExpressCard 2.0 standard with new SuperSpeed USB spec

PCMCIA do not seem deterred from expanding its ExpressCard range following the news that Apple had dumped it from its new MacBook range. PCMCIA has now announced the official release of the ExpressCard 2.0 standard, and with it comes support for SuperSpeed USB 3.0.

The transfer speeds are increased by 10-times, this is compared to the old ExpressCard 1.2. The new ExpressCard 2.0 offers up to 5Gbps bandwidth, this helps it when adding things like eSATA ports as well as high-speed storage, this includes the latest SSDs.

DigiTimes informs us that ExpressCard 2.0 is backward-compatible with previous PCMCIA cards, which means that your current 3G data card will still work with these new sockets. There is still a long wait until we will see these new ExpressCard’s, as they will not hit the market until 2011.
