OpenGL ES 2.0 support for iPhone 3G S

Due to the betas for the Apple OS 3.0 firmware, many of you will know that OpenGL ES 2.0 will be one of the new features. What you may not know, is that the current iPhone 3G only supports OpenGL ES 1.1, meaning that a selection of Apps may only be compatible with the new iPhone 3G S.

As reported from Engadget, the graphics processor in the iPhone 3G S sports the PowerVR SGX, which supports hardware acceleration of both OpenGL ES 1.1 and 2.0 versions. The original iPhone 3G however, contains the PowerVR MBX, which only supports 1.1.

Could this be a significant factor in upcoming gaming titles for the iPhone 3G S? It could well be a reality that future games from the likes of EA, Ubisoft and so on, only support the iPhone 3G S.
