CBS: iPhone 3GS and Palm Pre Neck-And-Neck

Since the announcement of the new Apple iPhone3GS, the Smartphone war is about to get messy, that is because Palm thought that they would be able to take the fight Apple with the Pre handset. That was short lived, as Palm did not count on Apple launching a successor to the iPhone 3G.

The Palm Pre was launched on Saturday June 6 for $199 after a mail-in-rebate on a two-year contract on the Sprint network. The handset certainly looked like a worthy competitor for Apple and its iPhone 3G. The iPhone lacked a few things, such as a physical keyboard which the Pre has, all though it is on the small side, and the WebOS would certainly give the iPhone OS a run for its money.

CBS News reports that the new iPhone 3G S is said to be twice as fast as the 3G model, as well as an increased battery life. The new handset also has a 3-megapixel camera with video recording. Where it beats, the Pre is with the choice, the Pre only has an 8GB storage capacity, the new iPhone 3G S has a choice of 16GB and 32GB.

The new iPhone 3G S will have to play catch up with the Palm Pre and its WebOS software, but Apple are not worried as the new iPhone OS 3.0 is due for release on June 17, two days before the iPhone 3GS becomes available.

  1. nonsense. Of cause Palm knew Apple were going to release a new iPhone, they just were not worried about as WebOS is far superiour.
And as for claims that the new iPhone is twice as fast, well why have’nt Apple release what processor is inside the 3GS? Maybe because the Pre is faster? or maybe because all the speed increase is due to more efficient algorithms within their software. Would be good to see some real comparisons of iPhone3G running the iPhone OS 3.0 and the new iPhone3GS.
