The news that Apple were still to offer the iPhone 3G but at a reduced price of just $99 has come as a shock to Palm Pre users, or those who were considering purchasing the Sprint handset. The question is now being asked as to how the handsets compare, but one thing is certain, this could be the demise of the Palm Pre even before it had a chance to get off the ground.
Electronista have been looking closely in to this, and have warned that Palm and Sprint should be very worried. The news that Apple will offer the iPhone 3G for $99 came of the back of the announcement of a new iPhone 3G S which will be launched on June 19. This will now put pressure on Sprint to lower the price of the Pre, but not by much.
The iPhone 3G is almost a perfect match for hardware features against the Pre, and now cost half of the up-front price. Both handsets have 8GB storage, 3G, GPS and Wi-Fi, although there is a little more screen space on the Pre.
The Pre has the choice of a QWERTY keyboard and touchscreen, where the iPhone 3G just has the touchscreen, much to the annoyance of others. The Pre has a replaceable battery and a 3-megapixel camera, the iPhone 3G only has a 2-megapixel camera and a built-in battery.

Ummm..the author of this article is kind of ignorant. Almost a perfect match? Even the new iPhone 3GS doesn’t match the specs of the Pre. Maybe you should compare actual specs.. like processor speed, ability to multi-task, integration with email ..including Exchange, screen quality..etc etc.
I’m not saying that the trade-off for the price doesn’t make the old iPhone 3G the better deal but coupled with AT&T’s network, at least in my area where coverage is poor - Sprint and Pre win though maybe the best bet would be a non-smartphone plus an iPod Touch which is the combo I had prior to getting the Pre and most likely will go back to since the Pre does NOT have voice dialing or auto-answer with Bluetooth.
