Roundup: Palm Pre Problems

Roundup: Palm Pre Problems

By: Peter Chubb | June 8, 2009 | 123 Comments

The much-anticipated Palm Pre has only been available to purchase for two days now, and as you would expect with any handset that had gained huge hype, there will always be problems with it. Engadget has been looking closely in to this and have given us a roundup of these problems.

There are already a number of issues being reported, and Engadget have wondered how Palm will be able to put a spin on these problems. The first problems reported was with a “splotchy,” distorted, or discolored displays; there are even reports of dead pixels.

One of the worst reports with the Palm Pre has to be the system shutdowns, to resolve this you will need to remove the battery and then place it back on. We are certain that a quick firmware upgrade will put an end to this issue.

These are just a few of the problems that Engadget readers have told them about; if you have any other problems with your Palm Pre, then please add your comments below.

Too much emphasis on the touch screen when there are times when it would be much more convenient to be able to navigate with a directional controller like the old palm’s had. Lack of this feature makes a number of tasks much more tedious than they used to be. The calendar is also terrible. Regardless of its ability to sync with google & facebook calendars, it is very cumbersome. It is difficult to enter appointments and events, and there is no color coding available like the old Palm desktop software had. Because I live off of my Palm calendar, this is a big issue for me. There are a lot of great features. The operating system is really good, and I’m sure that this will evolve into something very useful but right now it seems like a gimmick no where near the functional practicality of my old Treo’s. Very disappointed that so many simple conveniences that were standard on old Palms were left out on this overhyped phone.

I was the lucky one of two who purchased a new PRE on Sat. morning at a local Best Buy(yes, they only received 2!). Besides the manager having to sit on hold with Sprint for over an hour to tell me I was approved to upgrade (10y.o. Sprint customer-aka Premier status..hahhaaa if that means anything) I noticed that the speaker makes a LOT of crackling noise between moving ‘cards’, etc. Has anybody else had a problem with this? Great phone otherwise and thanks for the daily e-m updates!

The Palm Pre’s built in Google Maps app doesn’t support Google’s Public Transit directions. Since the app can’t be removed and every time you go to Google Maps, it automatically starts the app, you can’t even access the Public Transit Routes through the web page. It’s probably not that big of a deal for most people but it’s not something I expected to lose during an upgrade. Overall the phone feels very nice, I love the card interface. The multi-touch is awesome. It has enough features to keep me from buying an iPhone but I do have a few wishes; like a video recorder, and my music’s folder pictures show up in my Photo Roll which is annoying. I wish there were arrow keys or a trackball, why isn’t the memory upgradeable? And how long until we see a Flickr app? or eBay app? Anyway, for the price, it’s pretty cool and it’s definitely the best thing on the sprint network.

I picked up my Palm Pre on Saturday. I have had nothing but problems out of it. It constantly shuts down. I have to pop the battery to get it to come back on. Once it comes back on, the battery is depleted. It also gets very hot to the touch. I’m not sure if its a problem with the battery, phone or what. But it is annoying! I have made 2 trips today to my local Sprint store. They have said they will replace it, but they currently do not have any Pre’s in stock. So now I am without my phone.

  • Sean

I went into the Sprint store after an hour wait, and I have to say, not like going into an Apple store. My god, no customer service showing off this phone, even with the limited number of people allowed into the store at any given time. Then we get to the phone to try it out, I have to say. Not impressed. The youtube and CES demos werent at all like it actually operated. Im reading about the bugs this phone has, ok iPhone had that too on it’s initial launch, but honestly, Palm Pre, sad sad day for both Sprint and Palm. Sorry boys, back to the drawing table.

One HUGE problem is that the Palm Pre doesn’t properly support MS Exchange push mail. They claimed to support it on their hype sites, but now that the rubber hits the road, the car drove right into a ditch.

In order to properly support MS Exchange push mail with most companies and providers that want security, the Pre should support exchange EAS PIN-locking. Every Pre rival (WinMo, iPhone, Instinct, BlackBerry, etc) supports it, and even the old Palm phones (like the Centro) support it. The Pre is going to sink like the Lusitania because the developers didn’t get this basic security item straight.

That’s a shame too. I’d bet there is a 30% return rate (or higher) if they don’t get this fixed fast. What were they thinking? Maybe they weren’t…

  • Widespread Screen Problems

The blotching or discoloration problem on the screen is now being reported all over. Some purchasers of the Pre are putting blinders on since their devices aren’t experiening the same problem. It sounds like it is heat related. Google will give numerous reports at various forum sites. Palm will probably be the last to respond since their company has delayed this project for so long and have invested the survival of the company on the Palm Pre. In my opinion a recall might be in order with this 1st edition Palm Pre if indeed it is a hardware issue. Here is one thread to follow:
    http://www.everythingpre.com/forum/palm-pre/problem-with-the-pre-screen-19249.html
Please report this problem ASAP to the place you purchased your PRE.

Well i have had my pre for 2 days now and the touch screen is broke. I have to tap the power button to put it in stand by mode then hit it again and I can have access to the touch screen for about 20 seconds. Then I have to do it again. Called sprint and they are replacing the phone tomorrow but here we go again with problems problems problems. Can’t we make a phone that works? I agree with John doe and want some of my old treo features back. Also the calculator sucks. I loved the converter on my samsung instinct. Should have asked some customer opinions about likes and dislikes on phones and taken the top suggestions and rolled with it. Maybe palm will open up to att and apple will let sprint sale some more iphones for them. Another day another dollar!!!

  • frustrated

when i slide my phone closed at any time it will usually turn itself off. when it happens the screen colors get messed up then it fades away to a lit but black screen. after a few seconds of that it turns completely off. starting it back up takes a while.

i also have some dead pixels which i showed the sprint store at the time of purchase. they said to come back when they have a new shipment of phones and have it replaced.

one time i had a memory issue and the phone said to close some programs because it ran out of memory to open new ones. i didn’t have ANY programs open at all! i had to take out the battery and restart it.

i’m not even going to mention that i have to charge it several times a day because it goes dead quite quickly. not having over heating issues though.

i can’t get google maps to launch at all. it just sits there and tries to load.

when i tried to transfer files from my computer to my palm pre i plugged it in via usb. then when i clicked on “connect via usb” my mac instantly crashed. not cool in my book!

i have an appointment at the sprint store to return it and go back with my old palm centro which worked great. i just wanted the cool new thing – first releases never go well so i should have known better. oh well, at least i tried.

  • Faith

I called Sprint today to complain about 2 thing the phone gets way to hot and the battery life sucks. After charging all night it lasted from 10am-1pm today. I literally sent 5 text messages and spent 20minutes on the internet. Don’t buy this phone yet. Palm needs to work out these kinks. Oh yeah, and forget about being able to edit MS Office docs, you can’t.

  • Oldoobie

The Pre is not syncing properly with Google contacts. Addresses do not move back and forth properly. After the initial data transfer from my Palm 755P desktop I had no addresses on Google. Sprint responded that it is a known problem and they are working on it! Another friend also has the same problem. Also one of the Sprint technical people indicated that he is have a similar problem where Facebook does not sync changes after initial installation.

Not ready for prime time guys!

  • jeremy

I actually like the phone since I had an htc touch and another windows mobile phoen before that which were the worst phones ever made. the biggest problem ive had with the phone is the freezing. the phone has frozen once a day since i bought it. no problems with overheating, battery life is fine. does anyone know how to fix the freezing problem? taking the battery out to reset is getting ridiculous.

  • kurt

Bluetooth does not transfer files/music/pictures. It is only able to link to headset or headphone (audio). Unable to sync to Palm Desktop! Good music file transfer with USB cable and itunes. The phone does not sit in leather belt case with headset attached because of the plug location.

I was surprised that Palm OS programs were not given as APPS for Web OS. Those programs were great! Also surprised that there is no voice dialing or video. No bang and lots of Bucks…

I will give it a few more days for bluetooth to be upgraded (tech support says doubtful) then returning and switching to ATT/iphone.

I am having problems with the calendar. Unfortunately, when you have multiple calendars, the phone does not let you color coordinate them. According to Palm color coordinating the calendars is a standard feature. My guess was that it had something to do with how it communicated w/ google; however, after I download the calendars from google, calendar preferences gives me the ability to change the calendars to different colors, but it doesn’t work. Moreover, my wife’s palm pre shuts down every once in a while after closing the keyboard. She is just going to go to Sprint and get a new one. Ah yea, almost forgot, and the phone lags at times, “slightly”. Palm please get these problems fixed. Sooner rather than later. Overall, the phone is great. Multi-tasking is unbelievable.

  • Erik

THE SCREEN KEEPS FREEZING AND BATTERY LIFE LASTS LIKE 2 HOURS!!!

  • Damian

I just picked up my Pre yesterday afternoon. I like the UI and most of the features (although sparse). Came home and plugged it into wall power, it said it was charging- then woke up this morning to find it still on the charger with a “battery low” picture. Had to yank the battery and plug it into my PC to get it to start charging back up, and after awhile it came back up on it’s own. Real nice.

I am a very happy Treo 755p user and one of the first people on Saturday to buy the Palm Pre. I have to say I miss using my 755p. The Pre software is nice and the extra program and features are neat BUT I don’t like the slow response. It takes 10 or seconds just to dial a simple phone call. Every application I try to open it has a lag. This is very annoying compared to 755p where everything is much faster. Also, comparing to Treo 755p ((1)) my Pre keeps locking up. Twice I had to remove the battery to reset it. ((2)) the sound is too low, forget hearing the ringer in public places ((3)) the antenna is weak, 50% of the placed I use to drive and have serive with Treo is not there at all. ((4)) battery life is horrible. I really have to rely on my calendar and make a lot of phone calls all day… I have to charge the phone at least twice a day if not more. ((5)) the car charger does not charge when making a call. ((6)) cannot change ring tone between text and phone calls ((7)) Finally had to upgrade the software and got an alarm clock on the phone ((8))might as well not even have a calendar on the phone, it is slow and tedious to enter information, also it sometimes alerts sometime doesn’t ((9))I uploaded my contact from palm desktop and now it sometime takes 5-10seconds to load the contact because I might have too many…
I don’t know if I am going to keep the Pre… I am VERY HAPPY that Palm is trying to move forward with technology and this is definitely a good start BUT they need more work on thie Pre before it can compete with iPhone. I am STILL a palm fan but am hoping they can update the software of even the phone quickly if they can and fix these issues.

  • le

Yes above is very true battery life sucks and you will need to have a spare ready to go.

  • frustrated

took the pre back the other day. they happily took it back with no questions and even switch me back to my old plan which was no longer available. Pre = 0, Sprint = 1

good luck to everyone else – i will be waiting till the next generation of phones till i get another pre. i really hope they get it right next time around. too bad sprint doesn’t have the iphone. oh well. maybe i’ll get some sort of blackberry after my centro finally kicks the bucket.

  • Mike

Battery life sucks, I have a gap on the right side of the phone and when I hit the power button on top it feels like the button is going to fall through.

  • Danny

My PRe froze several times on day one and after calling the Sprint store that sold it to me, they told me to do the update. After updating I have not had any more freeze ups.

  • Danny

I had issues with the phone freezing up at first. Then it was overheating while on the charger. Yesterday it wouldn’t even turn on. I took it to the Sprint store and they took it in on repair. They came back and told me it was my lucky day that they had 1 extra phone to swap me with and se3nt me on my way with a new one.
CRossing fingers that there will be no problems.

  • R. Miller

I’ve had my Pre for a week now and I see no discoloration or blotchiness except when I’m wearing polarized sunglasses.

  • R. Miller

On my first day the battery drained quickly. That has settled down and yesterday I went from 6am to 8pm and still had 28% left on my battery.

Let’s get something straight people: batteries for ALL electronic devices suck. It is a constraint placed on manufacturers by the laws of chemistry and physics, not incompetence or a conspiracy. High-tech applications use lots of juice. If you don’t like that, then go back to a “brick” cell phone. My first Sanyo lasted all week on one charge.

There are at least 10 tips and tricks people are coming up with to prolong battery life. The simplest ones are:

    1. When you are not using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, turn it off.
    2. When you have Wi-Fi access, use it. Wi-Fi uses less power than the phone’s radio.
    3. Change the download time on your emails from 15 minutes to 30 minutes or an hour. If you’re so important you need to check e-mail every 15 minutes when you’re away from your home or office, you can afford the money to keep an extra battery in your pocket.
    4. I don’t know this for a fact, but if you leave an app running and turn off the screen, it might still be running in the background and using battery. To be on the safe side, shut down your apps before shutting off the screen.
    5. Dim your screen a little. Personally, I can’t stand to do this but if you can, then do.
    6. Buy another charger and keep it at work. You need a spare anyway.

  • pre-distraught

Anyone having an issue with Exchange Servew sync? A random times the email stops syncing and the only way I can get it working again is to shut off and turn back on. Any way to fix this.

  • SKB

Has anyone noticed the “play” of the touch sliding touch screen from side to side?? Even when open it still moves a bit, enough to think it’s a problem. That said, I’ve tested 3 BRAND NEW ones and they all to the same thing..kinda “wiggle” to the left and right?

    Thanks

  • Todd

I agree. I miss being able to navigate like the other Palm. In addition to what you mentioned, I found the following:
    1. Schedule is slow.
    2. Flipping between days on the schedule is slow
    3. Launching contacts list is slow
    4. Global find is not available.
    5. I find I have to keep pressing buttons without a response.
    6. Cut and paste does not work well

The old Palms functioned better and quicker and were more convienent.

There’s a better way to re-boot the Pre. Hold the on/off button down, switch the ring/silent switch back and forth 3 times. The phone will reboot.

  • Jean

Waited like everyone else…told it took so long to get all of the glitches out. I only added my contacts and no other data. My Pre froze then shorted out at full charge. Palm customer service is not prepared for problems with the Pre.Their customer service was following a flow chart and it was taking two hours to deal with and still no service. I couldn’t get past the profile screen to fix the problem. The system reset suggested didn’t work either. I was told by Sprint that I’d get a new phone…none available. Palm told me to go online to my profile and find my back up. It wasn’t there and Palm didn’t know why. I can’t imagine people who loaded all of their data on this phone. My favorite part of this was when Palm said my call and need could be escalated once I could provide a number where I could be reached during the day. Hmmm…my cell phone which isn’t working? Gave them my kids phone number to her $50.00 Samsung that works just fine even after a teenagers use over a year. Hooked up my old Samsung and back in business.

  • http://none bo

this phone is got to be the worst considering the wait time and all there should have been any gigs with the pre. But as mentioned in the other post phone shuts down sometimes when i pick it up, is way to hot to touch at other times, when i slide it open it shuts down man i can keep going but taking this thing back and getting my blackberry back. All this wait for some bs

  • Stephanie

I agree. It is hard to enter calendar appointments. Would have been easy to have a 5 direction toggle on the key pad or on the front of the phone. Palm sacrificed looks for a great feature. I have several different types of events that have daily and repeating. It was nice to have them color coded on the monthly screen. And I miss the today page badly. This kept me most up-to-date on my scheduling. Hopefully some thrid party apps will come to my rescue soon! Also, the world clock is missed. I used this as my primary alarm clock when it isn’t the set time my bedside alarm clock is set at, or when I am out of town, or need a 20 minute power nap.
What I am wondering is if anyone has had trouble with shadowing on the screen? I had to trade in the first phone already when the screen would have dark spots shadowing in different stages of grey to black on the screen making it difficult to see the white pages I was working on. This occured when I went outside in the Florida heat or getting into my parked car. Eventually it would go back to the normal screen. Makes me wonder if this was tested in the colder northern climates or indoors and not tested to the hot Florida weather? Mostly I am really enjoying the Palm Pre.

  • The Facts

Sprint don’t stand a chance with this. Their “customer service” infrastructure can’t handle even their existing lineup. If this is anything like the past, they won’t even train their people on the model, and you will be telling them how it’s supposed to work while they read their service bulletins to you. I would also suspect any fault you report will be entirely “unique”, despite web blogs to the contrary. The bigger sin is in the buyers who okayed it.

Then, well, Palm: Never encountered a more arrogant and unpleasant bunch of sociopaths. Didn’t expect the Pre (the clue might be in the name) to be anything more than apublicity stunt/prototype. Who tests this stuff over there anyway? That’s all.

  • The Facts

…and, before you ask, no I didn’t buy it. Hoped to, but not now.

  • Larry

I love the Pre. I think its very innovative. I’m not buying the hype, but the thing is pretty easy to use. I know a few minor glitches should be fixed within the next software update.

The only problem I do have is that if I close the phone more than “super slow and super gentle” it shuts off. Its weird. I’m taking it back to Sprint to see what happens.

  • nelson

my problem with the palm pre phone was that the second roll in the key pad didn’t type only every other key works

  • Barry

    Many difficulties with Exchange.

Mail seems to be working more or less ok. However, my contacts are only partially synched and Calendar does not synch at all..

Have completely reset the phone several times and created new profiles, but no improvement.

  • JCStalin

Some things to note about the Pre

    1. Software is slower than anyone would like compared to the 755p. If you are a on-the-go, fast mover, sales person, you might rethink purchasing this phone. It takes a longer than expected time to navigate the software.

    2. BATTERY LIFE – Not great but certainly should be expected with all the bells and whistles.

    3. MEMORY ISSUES – The “card” feature is good, but not when I can’t view things that I want when I want on the phone. I tried opening some pics, and couldn’t due to a “discard cards” error message. Not cool, and extremely frustrating.

    4. HARDWARE – This is something that hasn’t been talked about at all. When compared to the iphone, (which everyone is clearly comparing it to and should, it’s not as solid as I would like. When the phone doesn’t have its keyboard expanded, and the phone is shut, it slides back and forth when it’s in your hand when operating the web etc. The phone doesn’t “lock” into place which gives it a certain cheap feel. What concerns me is that over time the slider action will become even more “loose” and maybe loose function all together.

The good about the phone are numerous but I’ll highlight a few. The internet capabilities, the interface, and the camera should be praised.

I haven’t had any screen issues regarding discoloration or even any restart issues.

Bottom line, needs faster software and a little better hardware design and we’ll be in business.

  • MrMurphy

Got my pre on the release date and had zero problems up until the following Sunday. My ear piece stopped working. I could only hear calls thru speaker. Took it back and exchanged it for a new pre which worked great until about 4 hours later. My new pre shuts down if I close the keypad slider too hard. Well now I got to take this one back tomorrow. At least my Sprint store has them in stock. I’ll keep swapping them until I get one that works perfectly. Once I get one that works I think I’m going to be very happy. Its an awesome device.

  • Ali

I returned my Palm Pre after 6 days of constant issues.
    1. Horrible battery life, Had to charge 2 time during the day.
    2. I also experienced the same slider/crash issue that Frustrated mentioned above
“when i slide my phone closed at any time it will usually turn itself off. when it happens the screen colors get messed up then it fades away to a lit but black screen. after a few seconds of that it turns completely off. starting it back up takes a while. ”

    3. Randomly the phone would power off. Sitting on the desk or in my pocket it would be off.

I also recommend not purchasing this phone until Palm works out the obvious hardware kinks and software kinks. I also think that Palm misjudeged the power management of this phone and the battery can not keep up with this device. Whats the point of having a full featured phone if you can’t use it?

Im back to my bulletproof Blackberry 8830 and will wait for the next version of the pre to come out or a newer Blackberry model.

  • ArthurUSMC

    MY PRE BRICK
WEll, i was very happy to get the pre. i liked the features, and it worked fairly well…..
EXCEPT: would not stay paired with headset, batt life, ringer volume. and a few more. stuff i could live with.
CAN NOT live with is: sunday it stopped answering calls, (saw it ringing, had to call ppl right back), hour later stopped making calls, then was freezing up so i couldn’t do anything with it????
but it came back sun night? would make and receive calls, no keyboard. well talked to sprint, they said try hard restart. after that it asked me to type in info, well still no keyboard, can’t enter any info. so i now have a brick. after 6 calls today(monday) finally got a sprint corporate store in my area with a pre in stock, they said they would not touch it since i bought it at a best buy. best buys are out so i can’t exchange it. thank you Sprint in Vero Beach FL and thank you sprint for wasting hours of my time in NO CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!

  • TONY

Palm Pre – Just like Sprint itsself is another huge dissapointment. I have missed so many calls ! I also have been leaving very long voicemails on other peoples phones..it doesnt always hang up when you tap and close the phone !!! Not a very good thing

  • E Shaw

I am having the same issue with the heat…and battery life. Also…if you happen to go somewhere that it looses it’s normal EV connection and happens to Roam…it gets extremely hot then as well. I think because it is constantly looking for a connection. Of course the batter craps out then quickly too.

  • http://aol Len B

Couldn’t agree with you more. I am unable to get my work email to send. I have battled with Palm tech support to get it fix and after 4 different attempts over 5 days, they finally advised they have a problem which is being worked on. How Palm can launch a product with this kind of problem is outrageous.

Also when choosing to repeat an event in the calendar in July, say the 3rd Tuesday of each month eg from 7/21 forward, it does not give you the 3rd Tuesday to repeat as a selection, instead it gives the 4th Tuesday.

Also my Google maps is not able to register my current position.

I am ready to “make time fly”, by throwing this phone out the window!

  • Rachelle

Returned my first Pre because the battery was on fire all the time. Google calendar sync caused all my things to be duplicated and triplicated – very frustrating.
Will try new phone with new apps for a week and see if it works any better. Right now the Treo 755p is way smarter! Might go back to it or try the Centro!

  • PatTrick

I’ve been lucky enough to not yet have any of these problems. I’m suprised, however, to find no one complaining about the touch screen during calls. My ear/cheek is constantly hitting buttons whenever I’m talking to someone.

  • Roger Myers

I just replaced my Treo 755 with the Pre and have noticed a much weaker signal with several dropped calls in places my Treo worked fine. Anybody else experiened this?

  • Brad

Monica – I have had the SAME exact issue with mine… yesterday I accidentally dropped the phone, but it was a short drop on soft padded carpet…so it wasnt anything major that should have effected the phone. When I picked it up it worked fine for about 30 seconds (I was listening to Pandora at the time)…then it just cut off… I got the charging icon and it kept displaying “palm” and then would cut off…it kept repeating this. I took the battery out and put it back in and it was fine… Last night I let it charge over night… When I unplugged it and put it in my pocket after about 10 minutes I felt it getting hot… by the time I got to work 40 minutes later I had already lost 20% of the charge and I hadnt even used it yet… I tried to charge it when I got to work this AM and it will not get fully charged…
Im going to take it back to the store and see if they will replace it. I have the insurance so hopefully there will be no issues with Sprint.

  • Justin

This keeps happening to me too, and it’s irritating! is your new one better?

  • Hector Vazquez

I have the same problem; comparing this phone with my last one this one had no signal at all. With my last phone I had full signal inside my home, right now I can’t get one bar.

  • poi

You can set up the 3rd tuesday in custom repeats. go to custom, then click where it it says ‘daily’, it should give you the option to pick ‘monthly on 3rd friday’. Kind of a pain, not as easy as it was on centro, but hope this helps.
Also, if you set up an appointment on Google calendar on google website, you can set a reminder for any amount of time, days, weeks, etc beforehand. That’s my workaround for the calendar reminder choices on the Pre.
I’m still trying to decide if I want to return it :(

  • Aaron K

I don’t know all of the technical jargon. All I can say is my IT person has worked on this for 2 days and it is costing me a ton of money to get this phone to work. I’ve heard how this phone is compatible with MS Exchange. We haven’t been able to find a way to get this to work. Especially with the security certificate. At least we got my email to work through POP. Can get my contacts to sync.
    So frustrating!!!

  • J Maine

“Apple wanted a percentage of the monthly cellphone fees, say over how and where iPhones could be sold and control of the relationship with iPhone customers” – Verizon Wireless exec, 2 years ago.

Now you can see why Apple insisted on this. Palm should have used this as an example, but unfortunately does not have its own stores.

It’s official boys and girls. The Pre is a failure. =(

  • Bill

Actually, it looks like the biggest initial issue with the Pre was simply the resets and lockups due to the batteries not being conditioned properly upon being shipped. After a day or two, most people had time to charge the phone for a couple of cycles, which allowed 1) the batteries to get more stable and 2) the charge-level-detection circuity to become “trained” to know the battery charge level.

Palm has already released a software update that fixed some of the initial issues with the phone, and is working on another update. They appear to really be supporting the product.

  • Rob Nelson

The only problem I have had so far is a pretty major one, besides the battery life which I understand in a phone like this will be short, today one of the hinges broke so when I slide the phone up to use the keyboard is is loose, I have had the phone two weeks, has anybody else had the same issue?

  • Meg

I hate the copy and paste. It doesn’t work.

I hate that you can’t forward text/picture messages.

The battery doesn’t last long at all.

The phone gets hotter than hell, too!

    Sprint, DO SOMETHING!!!

  • SprintEmp

Well Sprint is telling the call center employees to lie about issues – or be fired if they tell the truth. All Pre users are to be told their’s is a unique problem and that the rep has never heard of the issue before if asked.

    Frequent calls are:
    1) Distorted screens
    2) Hot when charging – so hot some people have complained of blistering
    3) Short battery life
    4) No Exchange certificates supplied – so it doesn’t work. There are ways to fix this, but employees are told not to address it and refer callers to Palm. Palm tells customers to call their IT department. I guess you are out of luck if you don’t have one and use a service like GoDaddy -as they don’t know how to fix it
    5) Built in mic for non-speaker phone use failing. Oddly there is either a software issue or two mics (???). When this happens you can still talk fine on speakerphone mode.
    6) Lot’s of complaints about calendar
    7) Some o the early handsets had 1.01 of OS on them. Later ones have 1.02. First thing reps are told is to upgrade OS. For example 1.01 did not have an alarm clock in the software features. Also many glitches are said to be fixed in 1.02. Experience is not many of the glitches customers call in with are fixed by the OS upgrade. But at least we ‘look’ like we are trying.

Original beta handsets (called Alpha) were high end devices that were built virtually by hand. Rumor is the units cost $2500 to build – though that seems high – but metal housing, glass screens, etc. Product v1 handsets are plastic – including a plastic screen (most distortion issues are caused by warping from excessive heat). Rumor is this handset is targeted to cost under $50 to manufacture when ramp up is complete.

Sprint and Palm knew about the major issues prior to launch. The v1 hardware was in queue and too late to fix and meet the targeted launch window. The v2 hardware was just getting to manufacturing with its fixes to some – but not all issues. Decision was to launch and replace handsets with v2 30-45 days later. That is why you can’t get a replacement from Sprint call centers – v1 is not being shipped and v2 is not in yet.

In the meantime if you switched you have three choices: 1) wait for v2 in mid July if you are lucky; 2) switch back to your old phone – sorry for the hours or days of tortured inconvenience; 3) asked to be transferred to cancellations.

Sprint is losing 20-30 people a day from their call centers – many fired – but most are quitting in frustration. I know it is unethical to tell your employees to lie – but doesn’t that cross the line to illegal?

Oh, and I noticed not much coverage of the month leading up to Pre launch when 118 cities were having all or most of their data cards not working or sporadically working. It was a Pre upgrade issue related to expected increased data traffic. Sprint knows some people were out for 2-3 weeks in extreme instances. They know who. They know how long service was out. Guess what the policy is? No refunds, no automatically adjusted bills. Make the customer call-in, do not offer the refund unless they demand it. Again, a bit unethical.

  • palmpre – not for business

Not for business use is what I was told yesterday.
I received my Palm Pre last Fri, spent 2-1/2 hours in the store. But I wanted to make sure every thing was set up before I left.

Starting receiving emails, when I open 1 email, it either deletes it immediately or you can read it and then it deletes all emails pending.

They are deleted right from the phone, not the trash folder.
They are just gone from the phone.

So after several phone calls to *2 over the weekend, and several steps.

Back to the Sprint store on Monday. 1:45 mins later, I was informed that the PRE is not intended for business use.

I do not understand how they can roll out a product and not expect people to receive and send emails?
Unless you have a very basic GMAIL account.

They tell me its not the phone, that its our email system, which just happens to also be powered by GMAIL.

How can the emails show up on the icon, but once you open the inbox folder they just delete?
How can this be the server and not the phone?

They did offer to switch me back to my Treo, which I just happen to keep. And cancel my new contract.

After 15 years of being a sprint customer, I think I am going to ATT.

  • palmpre – not for business

Its seems that putting RECENT: before my account name, which is my email address, has resolved the problem.

I just tried this 6 hours ago, and now no problems.
That is how my outlook is set up with gmail, so I figured I would try it.

No help from the 6 hours I spent with Sprint techs.

  • Janiqua

I am having the same problem Larry. Any suggestions anyone on how to solve it? Is there an update out there? I really like my phone, but this is getting to be ridiculous.

  • Jacob

I have been a Sprint customer since June, 2001. I upgraded to the Pre today. I couldn’t even get the phone activated after spending 3 plus hours in the store. They said to wait a few hours and turn it on and it should be fine. They said they were having network problems.

I turned it on a few hours later and still couldn’t get the Pre activated. I called Sprint *2 and spent 2 hours on the phone with the tech he was able to get my phone activated by it can’t connect to the Sprint network during the profile creation stage. They say I have to swap it out now. Thank goodness for their 30 day return policy. You don’t like it for any reason? Take it back! It’ll call customer service no problem, but I can’t call anyone else, except 911. What a joke!

  • nash

I agree that they should recall the pre … the overheating can eventually get dangerous as in the past phones have exploded from over heating and could be harmful in ways not experienced yet …..

  • max

I am not pleased with the pre at all. The battery life sucks, it heats up, my all day events are all one day off- anniversary, birthdays etc. It’s annoying as hell and no help. I do miss my today screen and the fact that it does not sync with outlook. And where are the apps. I miss my games. Multiple numbers in contacts for google and palm. Very disappointed.

  • kenl799

My keyboard stopped working after about 3 days and I have been waiting for a replacement for the last 5 days. At first a restart would bring the keyboard back, but now it will not come back. It is so frustrating to not be able to answer test messages or enter any information anywhere. Phone also has the discoloring in the lower right of the screen and a handful of dead pixels, but I was overlooking those issues. I still love the phone though. Need my keyboard working again and more apps though!

  • garth

jeremy: when your phone freezes, does it eventually go through like a million things at once? i’ve had mine just freeze for a while, usually i don’t notice when i’m driving or at work or whatnot, and it just rushes through everything i tried to get it to do, and shows me any calls that came in when it was sitting there as if they were calling right then. like i’ll click around, and nothing will happen, then suddenly it’ll show someone calling…and i can’t answer, then it’ll show someone else calling, and i can’t answer, and it’ll show messages, apps, whatever…and i can’t do a thing until it finishes. it’s like it’s fast-forwarding through the last hour or so.

anyone else have this issue? It’s making my phone unuseable.

  • L Massiah

I purchased my pre on June 6, the day that it launched and I am on my second phone! It has been a headache and a didaster. There are several key issues. The battery life is extremely poor. I can talk for an hour total and use the internet for a half hour and my phone will tell me I have 10% battery life and my phone will shut down. When I’ve gone to uswe my charger when the battery is low, unlike other phones the pre will just shut down and a random battery with a question mark will appear for hours with no charging occuring. Other times in the middle of charging it has just shut down and will no longer come back on. Also if I am charging and talking on the phone at the same time it will just randomly turn off. I had so many issues that I exchanged the first phone and then got a new one that acted even crazier! Due to the pre I’ve missed many important phone calls as well as calendar reminders. I’m frustated and ready to give it back for good and wait for the i phone to come out!

I have this problem. When my ear touches the part of the screen near the earpiece, the menu in the upper right corner drops down and sometimes activates. One call was dropped because my ear apparently put the phone in \”airplane mode\”. Also, frequently during or after calls, the screen goes black and is unusable for up to 10 minutes after the call is finished. This makes the phone unusable until the screen reappears. This happens randomly, but frequently. I received a replacement phone because my 1st Pre had the same problem.

  • http://ProductReviews Stephen

I bought the Pre last week and noticed the screen unpredictably turned off frequently during or after a call. This happened on multiple occasions, and while I could still talk, the screen (and thus the phone) could not be accessed (for example to punch in a PIN, dial an extension, etc.). I couldn’t even end the call, because I could not see the screen button to terminate the call. This problem occurred randomly, despite updating software, removing and replacing battery, and resetting phone. The screen then remained black for up to 10 minutes. If another call came in, I could not answer the phone, because the screen remained black. This happened the 1st day I had the phone. I brought it back to the store and received a replacement. The replacement phone did the same thing. I spent 3 hours today with Palm Customer Service (in the Philippines). I spoke to 4 separate “Pre Specialists” who had no clue how to deal with this problem. I have had multiple other problems including that my ear against the earpiece will engage the drop down menu in the upper right corner and inadvertently turn on or off Bluetooth, WiFi, or airplane mode. This phone looked good on paper, but in reality is a disaster. I plan to return it tomorrow, 4 days after I bought it.

I too have been a Palm user for a very long time. I was so excited about the Pre and had high hopes for it for many reasons; to wipe the smirks off i-phone users, for the stock to go up, to finally be able to upgrade to a more functional phone than my Treo. I mean I REALLY wanted to love the Pre. But alas, the Pre just isn’t ready for prime time yet. I have had almost all the problems others have mentioned. The case gets uncomfortably hot when using the phone. In fact, the case gets a bit warm at times for no reason that i can ascertain. The battery life is amazingly short, even tho I do not talk that much, have the Blue tooth turned off, the Wi-Fi off when not needed, etc etc etc. The case on the phone is very flimsy. There is lateral movement when it is closed. When I press on the keyboard on the right side it compresses and makes a squeaking noise. I would hate to think what would happen if I dropped this phone! My screen display sometimes goes on and off for no reason at all. Ironically it happened once when I was showing the rep at my local Sprint store about the case movement problem. I was surprised and disappointed about the lack of Aps available. And although i have had he phone for 2 weeks now, a lot of the programs (particularly the Calander) do not feel intuitive. I know there is a learning curve with all things, but this one seems a steep curve. I have ordered a replacement Pre due to the sloppy case, but I have decided to chuck it all and reconnect my Treo. I’ll wait to see if the 2nd edition of the Pre is any better. Let’s hope they decide to go with a metal case this time around and perhaps a glass screen.

  • Ana

I bought the palm pre 4 days ago and these are the reasons why I plan to return it if the upgrade to 1.0.4 doesnt work:

    - Tried to open an application, being asked to discard cards to have more available memory, closed ALL cards, and still showing the same message. For what is the multitasking feature if you can’t even open 1 card?

    - GPS not being able to identify my current location.

    - Google maps doesn’t know where I am, the blue dot doesnt follow me, but stays in the start point.

    - Takes too long to launch applications

    - I have a facebook event from 5.30pm to 6.30 pm and it shows as an 8pm-9pm event in the calendar.

    - Once it freezed when using google maps

If these keeps happening I will ask to discontinue service, return phone, and getting an iphone with ATT.

  • allforpalm

Noting all the problems published, will wait for the new version before buying Palm. Palm need to make the new phone better than the treo, otherwise it does not make sense to upgrade. I have proposed a landscape mode screen multiple times to Palm but not getting anywhere.

Palm need to make the Pre synch seamlessly with outlook to become a business machine. In the treo, it did not do that either, so I purchased beyond Contact from dataviz, which is wonderful add-on with all the categories you needed, and all the phone numbers you need to add on. Talked with Dataviz, and they have not made a version of beyond Contacts for the Pre.

When doing spreadsheets like all business people do, it really have to be able to view on the landscape mode like the old Palm TX or T3. I will wait for that to happen. Nokia did it right with their landscape machines.

  • Mark

I purchased 4 palm pre phones last Friday I have had to call sprint for support every day and still no help. Today I decided that the phone is not worth the trouble and will be returning them to the sprint store. I am greatful for the 30 day return policy. Beware of promises by the sprint people as they will tell you anything to sell a phone.

  • ginxs

if i may please agree and add to john doe:
yes the calender is awful the addressbook is not much better and the directional keys are a monstrous oversight! it is almost impossible to put the curser where you want it, it takes a lot of time and patience. the calender hides your events off screen because you cant compress the vacant time slots.
but all of this comes second..
(although these are the primary functions of the phone for the last 10-15 years ive used one, its seems backwards to abandon the Greatest asset the phone had to offer)
.. to the fact that you cant sync with your desktop and ………..
THE PHONE SYNCS ALL YOUR INFO WITH THE CLOUD WETHER YOU WANT IT TO OR NOT! WITHOUT WARNING! IT RESETS YOUR DEFAULTS TO SYNC WITH THE CLOUD AND GOOGLE. you can not erase it. i know you think you can but you cant, i know they said you can but you cant.
my info came back to me after resetting all to zero… shouldnt have been able to… but it DID.
    can you say class action???

and cut and paste is a joke.

  • Tina

This phone is a piece of crap. I’m about to go on my 3rd pre. I’ve been having so many issues with this phone. I’ve talked 3 of my friends out of buying this trash. If it wasn’t for my stubburn husband not wanting to leave sprint. I’d have an iphone along time ago, and return this unnecessary headache.(his pre has worked fine from the start). All my issues with the pre has def made me want to leave sprint completely, I have never wanted an iphone more than having a shitty experience with this pre that wanted to give the iphone a challenge… But more than failed.

  • Joe

Long time Palm user. The phone has worked flawlessly since 6/10/09. No lockups at all ever. The keyboard slides perfectly. No problems with talking and touching the pad to my face (you can actually see it turn off the screen as you move it to your face). The screen resolution is amazingly clear, even the smallest text from websites can be read. The heat is to be expected with a 1150mAh Li-Ion battery. I just slide open the keyboard and stick it to my cars AC vent for 30 seconds and its cool again. Heat is rarely an issue in the house at around 79 degrees. And of course its going to heat up when charging!
I cannot believe that the “universal search” does not look in the calendar, or tasks. How are you supposed to find a calendar event from say a month ago or last year for that matter. I am sure it will be resolved in future updates. Sometimes there are delays opening or switching between cards, I attribute that to; playing pandora, browsing the web, checking four email address’s and constant chatter via the gtalk and aim. Battery life at first was terrible but seems to be getting better. I can talk, IM, email, check the web, google map or sprint GPS whatever all day long, 8a to 5p and still have 30% bat. life. The youtube app, pandora, craigslist, fandango, where, and twitter are fantastic apps. You couldn’t ask for an easier method for getting your pics and mp3′s on it, just copy and paste them right into the pre via my computer. You can use your mp3′s as a ring tone as well, Nice. My ring tone is an mp3 that goes from 200Hz – 2Khz, yeah I can hear it from really far away even at lower ring volumes. Wifi works perfectly, it connects every time. I found all the “free wifi” spots and never have issues with connecting. The built in speaker is loud enough, if I need more then the headphones go on. I like how it will pause your youtube, pandora or mp3 playback to answer a call then resume again when the call is over. There are just way to many things that are kicking about this phone to get hung up on the “little things”. I admit that I have not used the I-phone, however the folks I do know that use the i-phone are jealous of how the pre multitasks and is almost 100% usable with one hand (left or right) not to mention not having to use ipuke to sync the music, pics, etc. Overall I am very happy with the phone, and sprint service works wherever I am no worries. Hope this helps some of you on the sidelines, don’t let the negative posts fool you, most of these peoples problems are ID10T related.

  • Ferran

Same exact issue. Began doing it 3 days after I got it. at first I thought the power button had been pressed in my pocket or something, then when my leather case came in, I thought the problem would be fixed. then come to find out It did it again. and now it does it like 4-5 times a day. It could just be sitting there on my desk and then I go to pick it up and its blank, nothing, won’t turn on…have to reset it!!! WTF!!! For now I’m glad I still have my old treo (the third one I’ve had, and they never broke down, and only had reset issues when I would upload certain (bad) thrid party apps) but never with the basic pre installed apps… this is ticking me off!!!

  • D. Bentworth

I have now spent $500 with a computor consultant trying to get the pre to synch successfully. We have tried every available software. There appears to be no immediate solution. The old Palm claender and contact array in my Treo’s was just fine. It was nice to have one’s contacts listed with last name first…otherwise Outlook and Google are really annoying. I agree with the complaints about the touch screen..it requires too much precision and patience. Access to everything is slow and multi layered. I cancelled my AT & T program for Sprint and the Pre. Big mistake. I will try to return..but expect alot of bs. Plus I ordered all kinds of accessories. Stay away from the Pre. it needs too much refinement. They rushed this one probably to try to not be crushed by the iPhone. The Pre is a bad product.

  • heather

    Hi,
I have NEVER written a post before but since I am on my 3rd Palm Pre in less than 25 days I wanted to share my experience and frustrations….

1st Palm Pre was not holding a charge longer than 3 hours and also was getting etremely hot! Returned due to needing a phone with a longer charge…was not a big problem.

2nd Palm Pre- same problem with charge, overheating and now I have a CRACK in the screen near the charger after 2 days – AND NO SPRINT, I DID NOT THROW MY PHONE AGAINST A WALL.
    NOW IT GETS FUN…
We back to Sprint store and they right away said call insurance (which costs $100 per claim and they will give you a refurbished phone) and wanted nothing to do with me- manager was on vacation.

So I called Sprint 1-800 to be told to go to a “Corporate location” as the store I bought my phone was a franchise and they are not connect to Sprint. So I went to the corporate store and the tech said it was to hard to tell if it was physical damage with the crack and I needed to see a manager who only works 9- 5pm (I DO TOO!) I called and spoke to the manager who told me if I pay $120 he would switch it out and they were in stock. I went in the next day at 7pm and they told me they had NO PHONES until I got upset they found one magically but they could not give it to me because I did not buy the phone from their store…OMG!! Why am I getting more and more pieces to their story everytime? I made them call the manager who I spoke to and he agreed I could have the phone for $120.TAKE MY MONEY!!!!

Good news is after 2 phones this one works!!! Sad news is Palm Pre obviously has issues and I think Sprint needs to learn how to take care of their customers.

  • Jennifer

My Pre keeps shutting itself off? The battery is fully charged, yet it keeps shutting itself down. It takes FOREVER to turn back on, so this is VERY inconvenient. I am glad my company paid for this phone because I am pretty disappointed with it and would be furious had I spend that kind of money.

  • Sean

I just purchased my Pre Last week. For the last couple of days I have been noticing an issue with the screen being “ghost touched.” What I mean by that is while holding the phone in my hand and NOT touching the screen, applications begin to open up, phone calls are made ( a few to the police), airplane mode is activated and deactivated and those are just a few of the problems that can come up. All of this happens while multiple touch “indentions” pop up on the screen. There is no way to control this or to stop it. I have to shut down the phone in order to get it to stop. That does not fix the problem though. For now I wait to see what new and exciting things my phone will do. Seriously considering a return. Never had these problems with my Instinct.

  • Gerry

I think I like the phone. But it often says too many cards are open. I have to constantly be charging the thing or it will run out. It seems inconvenient to enter things into the calendar. Apps like evernote seem often to be unable to update. Problems and duplicates syncing with Google Contacts And the headphone feeds back. I miss the speed of the old Palm desktop and feel like a beta-tester but I still think I like the phone (may switch to (yikes) AT+T because the iphone is so together

  • Calesuar

Yeah, ok, JOE, we get it, you work for Palm or Sprint.

  • Calesuar

I’ve been a Palm user since Palm Pilot. My last one was a Treo 650, holding for a long time for the PRO or PRE, or iPhone. Decided for the PRE to stay away from Windows (on the PRO) but like the PRO looks a lot and the rest of the Treo features. Went with the PRE because of its keyboard, AND because I thought I would be getting basically a Treo but with the new cool synergy features of a new product. I was so WRONG. The PRE is NOT a TREO, couldn’t have been possibly designed by Palm, no way; it is as if the design went to an outside design house. Who cares about synergy when the basic functions have been taken away?

If you are used to driving a BMW 700 series automobile, you would expect the next higher 700 number to be even better than it predecesor, wouldn’t you?

Well, what the hell happened to the PRE? All it’s got is new cool features that work half-ass at best, and it has none of the essentials.

It sickens me when people are so accustomed now to pay for services that are halfass and just take it, hoping for the product to improve over time, maybe. Well, that mentality would be ok if I would have also paid them $200 with a 2 year contract, but then somehow my $200 would kick right back to me half of it, and I would quit my contract in one year without any penalties. Woudl Palm/Sprint think that would be acceptable?

Let’s see, the PRE Pros/Cons (compared to its competition):
    1. More than one program working: Cards that flip
    2. sliding Keyboard, but buttons on edge is a problem.
    3. Synergy, but works half ass.
    4. 3.0 mpixels with flash, but no dates on pics, can’t change sizes (no zoom), can’t label them, can’t bluetooth/share this way. Can’t do squat with them unlike its predecesors, except upload a picture into Facebook but with no comments, no re-touches, just virgin like that. Dumb.
    5. NO VIDEO period. WTF?
    6. Battery last half day (half ass?)
    7. Calendar is MEGA SLOW. Can’t search. Pain to move cursor where you want to. Can’t pick a particular sound for its alarms. Nice accordion feature. Copy and Paste is just for show, a dummy feature, a joke. Highlighting is a joke. It needs a central button like its predecesor to move cursor.
    8. Contacts: yeah its nice to group easily from other sources, big deal when compared to its pain compared to its predecesors: Can’t categorize; all your contacts go into one big mess. And it Can’t search its notes, can’t search by company name. So, you can’t find restaurants if you don’t have a person name attached to it, how do you like that? And yes, it is unlike its predecesors. Can’t assign a ringtone to a category, you can to a particular person, but I have 400 contacts so does PRE expects me to remember 400 tones? Ringtones for known, unknown callers? NO. Ringtones for work related people? NO. Ringtones for your ex-wife? Thankfully YES. Ringtones for clients? NO. Can’t lock or hide particular contacts if you wish. Can’t share contacts, can’t bluetooth them. Could the previous Treos do this? YES. PRE? NO!!!
    9. Notes. OK. different, but can’t list them. Can’t forward, or bluetooth them either. Can’t lock particular ones so they can be hidden from view unless you use a password like its predecesors. Workaround, you have to lock the entire stupid thing so every time you want access to the PRE for any other feature you have to enter a stupid pin, even if you just turn the screen off for one second, every time you turn if off, you have to enter the pin numbers. Useful/helpfull? NO!!!
    10. EMAIL: nothing to brag about , ask blackberry folks. Annoyance #1, you have to delete every gosh darn email by hand, one by one, then go to the TRASH and delete again one by one. Could you delete a whole bunch at once with its predecesors? YES!! Was that a Mega stupid design flaw? YES!! Special ringtone for email alerts? NO! I get 70 emails daily, bunch of schedule events, plus text messages, I’d like to be able to know which one to ignore or answer based on ringtone, like I was able to do with previous Palm device.
    11. Short TEXT Messages. Nothing extra to brag about. Bitch about? Doesn’t use ringtone chosen in the Contact application, can’t choose one anyway at SMS app either. Can’t forward a SMS. Can’t bluetooth it either.
    12. GPS. Oh, GPS! BFD! Ok, new feature if you had a Treo 650 like me, but, is it practically useful on the PRE? NO! Ok, picture this, you get in your car, set your PRE’s Sprint Navigation app to take you somewhere in San Francisco 1 hour away from where you are. Done. You rev your engine and take off, hook up your PRE to your charger of course otherwise it would be dead by the time you get there. You put your earpiece on so you can answer phone calls while you are driving and also so you can hear the instructions of “Bitching Betty” telling you where to get off the freeway, right? WRONG! It seems the outside designers are from another planet where they have dog hearing, and not bright enough to figure out that the rest of the driving population on EARTH DON’T. So, here you are trying to focus on your driving, Bitching Betty is saying something but of course you can’t hear shit over the car’s engine, and tire noise (I have my windows rolled up naturally), and you can’t see crap either, for one the screen is too small for you to see clearly and for two, you are supposed to be paying attention to the traffic, not your stupid phone device. Yeah, Driving GPS, but it’s useless.

My advice: Stay with your current TREO.

  • Brent

I am now on my 3rd Pre in 30 days and it looks like this one is going to die as well. I am in agreement with every comment I have seen here. This phone was sold to me with the promise it would work with the Palm Desk top software, supprise it dose not. I have been with Palm devices for 8 years and now have had to redo all my stuff. After 5 hours on the phone with coustomer service I was finaly able to get my contacts and calender transfered to the Pre. The loss of HotSync is really disapointing. Overall I would not recomend this product to any one. Dose any one know if the new Treo will use Palm desktop software or will it be windows os based? Looks like a BlackBerry could be in my future.

  • Andrew

I had 3 problems with Pre. First, within 2 days of purchase, the screen would go dead on a received phone call. You could hear the caller, but see nothing. I returned the phone and had them replace it.

After about 3 weeks, when charging the phone, it would go through a system reset never completing the charge greater than 60%.

Ultimately, I returned the phone. My Palm treo 755 is great. I just thought the pre would be similar to the Iphone. It is not.

Too bad, perhaps when ATT loses its monopoly on the IPhone sprint will pick it up. Oh well, until then . . . .

The cute and paste does not work very well.

  • 245piggy

I loved the phone, except for the phone features. If the phone is in silent/vibrate mode, you cannot make or receive a call. You have to turn speakerphone on. That defeats the purpose of silent mode right? I agree that the calender is not very user friendly, but felt that it may grow on me as time goes on. I am on my 2nd phone in a little over a week. Switching to the Palm Treo Pro. If that fails…Blackberry here I come.

  • 245piggy

I forgot one more thing…Bluetooth. It does not stay active. I have a bluetooth in my truck, so when I get in and get a call I can talk without holding the phone to my ear or speakerphone. This phone does not stay active. I have to turn it off and then back on to turn the bluetooth on in my truck. Not like the Centro I had before. Such a cheap phone that did everything. I used to laugh a people who spent a ton of cash on a blackberry.

  • PSGILL

I AGREE WITH MOST YOU. I LIKE PRE. IT HAVE POOR WORK, LIKE IT WAS CREATED IN RUSH. I LIKE KEYBORD AND TOUCH SCREEN. ALSO HOW IT CAN SYNC WITH OUTLOOK AND GOOGLE WITH SOFTWARE AND APP. MOST OF ALL PLAN WAS VERY VERY CHEAP BUT YES COPY PASTE, BATTERY, SCREEN(SCREEN IS NOT VERY TCIGHTEN IT MOVES) LOOK, TOUCH STONE ALSO HAVE PROBLEM(pre keep beep charging sound when on it kills my sleep) all need work. o I AM ON MY 3rd PRE AND GOING BACK FOR SOUND PROBLEM.

  • Benjamin

I recently purchased the Palm Pre and immediately realized that its functionality and ease of use was truly all just “hype” because the battery life sucked, the touch screen really is of no convenience at all. I got a Blackberry Curve 8330 and it has everything I need and then some! I can even do voice-activated dialing and it is so user friendly and the battery last all day with a single charge,..I mean over 12 hours plus of use (no kidding).

  • Sore thumbs

cant stand the small keyboard. fingers are killing me. anybody had problems with random contacts being deleted?

  • Michelle

I have had my Pre for awhile now, and thought I wasn’t going to have any problems, and was happy with the choice I had made to switch from the Treo to the Pre, which was a hard decision for me to make. I loved my Treo. Then all of the sudden it just keeps shutting down for no reason. 4 or 5 times in a row, multiple times a day!!! Then once it loads back up… which takes forever .. as soon as I launch an app… it goes right back to a blank screen. Drives me batty!!! I am afraid to make any kind of business call in fear that I will be cut off right in the middle of my conversation. I am headed to the Sprint store today to see what they say. And this was the phone that was suppose to save Sprint? WOW!!!!

  • Joey

Totally different problem: On my 2nd pre in 30 days, this one has the same problem as the 1st. The audio speaker almost silent except for pops and crackles. I guess I will just get a new phone every 15 days until the permanent fix comes out.

  • Prevstour

I had a pre and switched to the Blackberry Tour after returning the pre four times for multiple reasons.
I have to say I liked the pre better, if it weren’t for all the problems. I sell real estate and can’t miss calls, with all the shutdowns the pre didn’t work.

  • Meg

My problem is that the damn phone keeps turning off. i think its locked, but i have to hold the power button. its happened a dozen times in the last 3 days, and seems to be happening more frequently. also, i don’t like how i can’t chose to lock the screen, and i can’t forward text messages!!! oooh, that irks me!
other than that i love it!

  • Amy

I had the same problem with mine randomly shutting off for no reason. I took it to Sprint and they said it’s a problem with the connection by the battery because of the slide function. They tightened up the connection, but it still happens if I slide the phone open too quickly.

  • Angel

I also have the issue with the phone turning off when I least expected. I pick up the phone and it is off. I take it out of the leather pouch and it is off. I do not know for how long it has been off – very fustrating. I will be try to see if it is the battery loose or if I press the on/off button as expressed. The phone also gets very hot. I had some problems at work and had to be on the phone for a long time and it burned my ear. Not funny. I burned my ear very bad. The little metal bar in the ear part got very hot. This worries me that it can be a health issues with the phone if it does this. Has anyone experience this?

  • Danny

Well I feel like the minority here today, but I just absolutely love my new palm pre. I really think it is what a person wants from a phone. It does all my business and personal stuff without a hiccup. Now I sure hope they do come up with more ringtones for text, and email.I agree with the short life span of the battery, pretty bad actually.

Other than that I love it

    Anyways,

  • Michael

I had the same issue w/ the cursor, but if you hold down the orange button(the one that changes letters to numbers) then u can move the cursor back and forth and it’s much easier. Now saying that I still took mine back because of the calander and contacts(why have a b-day in the contact if it does not remind you). Hope this helps you.

  • Emelet

    Well, Well, Well!
I wish I had read all these comments before upgrading to the Pre. I would have never decided to giveup my Treo. The only feature on this piece of crab that has been very attractive and fully functional is its multi tasking ability…other than that, dont bother. For the past two days, a new phone that I bought less than a month ago, has kept me unreachable by my biz clients. When I make a phone call the intended receiver and myself hear nothing but static and loud noice which is very disturbing to the ear. You cannot even hear what the other is saying. Secondly, this piece of useless equipment just shuts down, and all calls routes to voice mail. I have to push the power switch to get it started just toooooo frequently! The phone is just tooo slow to boot up. I can go on and on with the problems with this phone that I have had for less than a month. It is outrightly USELESS!!!!!! Palm could have done a better job than this!!

I got a the much hyped Palm Pre on Saturday, I quckly relaised that, I made a big mistake. It is “Nice” phone, but too much emphaise on style and not functionallity, It doesn’t sync with Outlook, without going through a major preamble of having to export contacts and calenders; after this it picked up the Contacts but has still not picked up my calender. I previously had a old school Blackberry, which was a bit of a brick, but it was tough and more importantly worked, for email and calender, contacts and phone, which is all I need. The Pre seems to be a case of style over substance. I am going back to the O2 store in the morning, to go back to the old Blackberry. Unless they get the basics right, all the gimicks in the world are mere fluff!

  • John

My palm pre is dropping calls like crazy and I never had that with the Palm 755. Mime goes back tomorrow

  • N Vive

Mine is currently blinking on and off. Problems started yesterday. Otherwise it is still working, but it seems possessed. I will likely go to the Sprint store to get it checked out.

  • Chris

I’ve been having problems lately with my screen coming on and off by itself. Even more recently, on top of the existing problem, the “turn off” option keeps popping up as well. I’ll be typing a text message or just looking at something on my phone, and my screen keeps turning off on me.

This is the 2nd time Sprint has replaced my palm pre. The first time, the pre constantly dropped calls… and now after abotu 6 months, it is doing it again. Supposedly, if you put your ear or your finger on the oval plastic like dash on top of the phone (where your ear would lay), it would turn the screen to gray, in order to speak on the phone without interruption. They say, it happens even during speaker phone feature — which is a bunch of bull really. It still does it!! even after the replacement.

The pre does heat up even after a few minutes on the phone!! I am just waiting to develop brain cancer. Yes, I agree on the battery life – totally sucks!!! Needs to recharge after a few minutes on the internet, or use of pandora or video etc. Sprint says that I would need a extended battery, which would cost an extra. of course! I like the compact size, and the finger touch screen, much like the i-phone, however, it has no protection whatsoever, without the only leather case they offer at the store. I bought another at Fry’s, which was this flimsy plastic coer, and it broke within a week, from a couple of drops. what a waste of money.

and the GPS? heaven forbid I’m going to see a client, or consultation or wedding, and getting lost somewhere I shouldn’t be. It was lured me into places that was opposite of where I was going. Good grief!!
I’ve come very close to flushing it down the toilet or throwing it out my car window.

I am really planning to change to the Blackberry 8330 curves as well! The Pre would’ve been great if all the gliches were corrected before it was on the market.

    Disgruntled Sprint customer

  • PRE SUCKS

I had my pre for about 5 months now.

For the first two months I had my screen die on me several times but now I am having something different. I’m a sales person using over 6000 mins every month thats why I use a hand set rather than a bluetooth. Now everytime i try to use the pre without the handset it keeps on opens the handset mode even though I dont have the handset plugged.

OMG MY PALM IT WUZ FINE TO MY KNOWLEDGE AT FIRST ILVE NEVER DROPPED IT NEVER GOTTEN IT WET I DOWNLOADED SUM APPS THE OTHER DAY MAYBE 2 or 3 my fone started running slow freezing then toadd insult to injury I can’t get this volume increase thingy to go away you know like when you turn the volume up the little bell shows up then at times I can’t even cut my volume up or down then wen I’m listening to music the music is still playing then the volume cuts off an when I use my maps they load so slow even the internet runs slow….SO I performed a partial reset it worked fine for maybe 30min I thought problems were resolved but the volume icon came back blockin all notifications its hard to push a card back from the screen..I have to double sumtimes triple click the the center button to navagate away to another card..I can’t see my main screen icons I have to make them hover over the volume icon..I took it to sprint today they jus “cleaned it out” its still awful an I’m not eligible for an upgrade for a yr an to think..I raised hell to get this phone I’ve only had it since sept an I hate how I can’t save images directly from the net to my pre I can’t even get ringtones directly from a source I have to plug it in to my laptop go inside my phone an re-arrange my things the way I want them its crazy an such a hassle!! • Travis

My plam pre will not unmute … it plays music and and I can adjust the volume for music but when it comes to calls all I get is the vibrate and when I try to turn up the volume it keeps showing a speaker with a slash threw it (muted)…

  • baf-barros

I read through some of the comments and I don’t quite understand why some many people are having all these issues with the Palm Pre. The only one I concur with is the Battery Life – truly disappointing. Other than that, I have had no problems with my Palm Pre.

I can sync with Outlook/MS Exchange for my Calendar, Emails, Contacts and it’s like a breeze. I have all the corporate contacts at my finger tips. I can send/receive emails at whatever time interval I choose, flag emails for follow up, accept meeting requests. It all works.

Copy and paste works fine. Not sure what the fuss is about.
Calendar was a little slow but that has been fixed.

I don’t quite understand but maybe it’s just me — out of the thousands and thousands who have purchased this phone.

Keep in mind as well that this v1 of the phone. Any v1 software, no matter how much testing is done, is going to have some issues.

  • Kimberly

How did you get the contacts and calendar transferred over?

  • Dan

Problems ha with the palm pre i have always had issues since I owned it. the wifi doesn’t work to well on it my phone tries to shut off all the time by itself. The touchscreen is starting to not work as well. My popwer button doesn’t work i have to remove it and put somethign down there to turn my phone off when the turn off wont show like it usasly does. The other night my screen started flickerling on and off while i txted and most of the buttons i hit didnt even work when this was going on.

  • rodney donovan

I love my Pre………except…It does power off occasionally, locks up, and I have to remove the battery at least once or twice a week. Just recently, when I make/receive calls, I can hear the other end perfect. The other end gets nothing but static. I have also noticed my signal indicator bar as barely lit up with one bar. It will occasionally get two or three, but for the most part, only 1 or maybe two. I have had it for about 3 months, so it is back to the Sprint store. Sadly of course.

  • rodney

Yup, same problem here. The Pre is a neat phone with many uses. Personally, I would prefer a side sliding keyboard with larger keys, and better quality.

  • Terry

I have the same problem –my phone will not ring–I have had this Pre for about 5 months and the first one for 1 month because of the battery problems I was given the lemon I now have–I am in Vancouver BC and dealing with Bell–I am sick of having irate clients because of a phone that won't ring—I am unloading this boat anchor tomorrow-

  • Bob

This phone sucks problem with the phone cracking from the charger port and palm nor sprint is stepping up to the plate

  • taff

I have had problems with my palm pre first it tells me to dicard some of my cards when I try to run a app, when I have no cards out. Second pluged my headphones in and listened to my music all da today now I can't hear anyone on the phone unless I put it on speaker.

  • brian

    vidieo does not work

  • Stuart

Palm Pre is absolutely crap. Had it 2 days, battery on first day died at 1 pm after being charged all night and used from 8 a.m. Second day, battery didn't last till I got home from work and I hardly used it. The phone also turns off whenever I shut the slider. The screen resolution is far behind most of it's competitors. If an MMS or sms is unable to send, rather than the phone defer sending and retry automatically, I got endless returned messages with could not send error. Never happens on my nokia. Phone also gets very hot. The camera may be 3 megapixel but the phone seems to have no auto focus so pretty much, every picture is poor and it has very few features , if any on the camera, just push button for photo. The sound from the phone is very poor when pitched against my N95 and Blackberry Storm. Only decent thing I can say is the idea of the operating system is on the right track but I think they need to look about their competitors a bit more and they should see were they are going wrong. Screen too small to be truly effective. Don't buy one folks!!

  • Sam

I have 2 Sprint phones, i tried both of them plam pre one really low voice to hear.. how to fix this??

  • Ken Tonseth

i am having a problem with mine idk what to do…. ive had mine since easter and now the sounds dont work, cant hear people through the ear peace so i have to go on speaker phone, go to record something and the sounds dont work. what do i do? does anyone know how i can resolve this? there is no bell deal in my city…

  • Chuck

My issue is that once the battery gets so low it requires a recharge it takes a very long time to charge enough to be turned on and then it takes for 1-3 minutes to boot up.

  • Sarah

I've had my Palm Pre for less than a month, and about a week ago the touch screen completely stopped working. As you know, you can do basically nothing when this happens. The only time I could use the phone was when it was plugged in and charging. Took it to my Sprint store, where I waited an hour just to be told my software had "serious problems" and that I would have to take it to a corporate store where it could be replaced (I'm still within my 30 days). Made a special trip to the corporate store, where they told me they couldn't do anything because I had purchased it at a Sam's Club. They told me the closest one was in New Jersey (I live in New York City). I had to spend 90 bucks to have it overnighted to be fixed, then another $120 to get a temporary phone just so I would have some way to even have a phone. Don't get this phone.

  • KLEIN

Ive just received a 3rd "refurbashed" Palm Pre from the Sprint store after having issues
with the last two. And after useing this 3rd one after about 6 hours, the volume control stopped working! I purchased this phone Oct, of 2009…Palm seems content to continue giving- out refurbashed hand-me-downs even though I paid for a brand new one?…Shame on me!…Anybody out there thinking of purchasing a Palm Pre…DON"T.
My wife has had an I-Phone for the last couple years, and no problems to report. Very reliable. Oh I almost forgot, I got a hold of Palm tech support. THEY CHARGE $16.00 FOR BASIC TECH SUPPORT< AND THE PRICE GO'S UP FROM THERE. YEEE HAW. I'll be going back to the Spit store for a 4th Pre,maybe after the 4th, i'll get one that works???

  • Not a Palm Pre Fan

I have had my Palm Pre for just about a year now. Over the last couple of months things have begun to go downhill. Of course the battery life is nil if you actually plan on talking on the phone or using any apps. My alarms have to be reset every week. The phone will not charge with a TouchStone. I have begun dropping calls, even sitting in the room with my Air Rave box and sometimes it simply won't ring. Voicemail has gotten intermittent with following commands when I punch them in on the touchscreen so I have quite a few saved messages since it saves them as default. My touchscreen has completely quit working when the phone is plugged up to charge and today it stopped working completely for an extended period of time. I couldn't even power down. It tells me that I have too many cards open and won't perform whatever function I have requested even when there are no cards open at all. These are just a FEW of the problems I am having after having owned the phone for a while. Palm doesn't care, Sprint won't help me out and I am ready to flush the phone down the toilet. DO NOT BUY A PALM PRE, IT IS A CHEAPLY MADE PHONE. There are too many problems and no interest in taking care of the customer.

  • Desert_skiff

Hello, everyone. I recently got a Palm Pre 2. When I got it, everything worked just fine. Fabulously in fact, but when I plugged it into my laptop, it started acting funny. I think a lot of it had to do when I tried to put in a password that I thought was mine, but apparently was the wrong one and then I tried to sync it to my computer. Well, it displayed the dreaded “Offline Phone Error that cannot be resolved message.” Any advice in this regards will be gratefully appreciated and many thanks in advance.
