EA: Xbox 360 maxed out while PlayStation 3 has not

By: Daniel Chubb | June 6, 2009 | 18 Comments

Most times when we hear news about the Xbox 360 verses the Sony PS3, it comes from gamers or in the form of a game trailer.

Today we’re hearing that the Senior VP of EA Games Europe – Patrick Soderlund – has said at E3 2009 that the 360 has been “maxed out”.

Making things worse and according to oxm.co.uk, he goes on to say that the PlayStation 3 hasn’t been maxed out yet. It’s our feeling that both the Xbox 360 and PS3 have more to give depending on how the technology is used.

Just looking at the recent news of Project Natal and the fact that it’s a while until it’s release, shows you that the 360 has more to give.

Do you agree with Patrick Soderlund, has the 360 been maxed out?

I’m not a developer, why would my opinion matter in this situation?

your opinion matters or you wouldn’t be reading this article.

you have to take his statement in context though, it is all dependant on how the consoles are used.
I don’t personally care if it is maxed out right now because they are still making sweet games. if ps3 starts having better games than 360 in a couple of years then i will care.

soon I’ll be able to say “computer, begin program” to the xbox 360 and it will start my favorite game or music or whatever. in a few more years we will have holographic projections that we can interact with in our living rooms. maybe for xbox 720!!

The xbox will get maxed out sooner than the PS3 due to lower capacity discs and an inferior processor. There are more possibilties with the PS3s multiple cell processors and more ways to think around carrying out tasks when programming for them. Just look at the PS2 for example if you compare the original release games with newer ones the developers have managed to get more out of the hardware and its still going strong. The original xbox is over and done with.

I’m not going to get into a fanboy argument here but the term “maxed out” can be misleading, you can run a piece of software that’s using 100% of available processor & memory and technically that’s maxed out, however code can always be refined, better more efficient engines can be designed and optimized and software tools evolve.

You can see from just about any game console’s life cycle that as long as it’s still the developers main project or source of revenue, the the devs will continue to find that litle bit more.

Certainly the improvements are more obvious early on in the life cycle as the devs are getting to grips with new hardware but there will always be little optimizations as long as the market for it is still strong enough to reward the effort.

scott u dont even know what your on about dude so jst shut up

  • Ray

the fact that Uncharted Drakes Fortune looks better then Gears of War 2 says it all.

  • kyle

Scott in case you didn’t know, the original xbox was way more powerful than the ps2, and no one really knows, or for that matter even cares about the cell processor, it’s jus you throwing a term out there.

360 games are still looking better and better… storage is a non-issue, you can use more than one disk you know.. the 360 download times are 5 to 6x faster then the PS3′s.
Considering some of the best PS2 games came out the last couple years before next gen consoles cam on the market, the 360 has many years ahead of itself, and ahead of the PS3…
Sony’s best games are single player, MS’s are multiplayer, … and considering that it’s multi that really sells now…well, you get it.
Articles like this are written by fanboys that don’t seem to be aware of the US numbers and how the 360 is trouncing the PS3 here.

I can write simple code that can “max” out your quad-core cpu and “max” out all of your available memory. Does this make it a great application. No! rather a useless inefficient application. The lesson is that it all comes down to the tools available to make great games for the Xbox 360 and the PS3. Both consoles are evenly matched, although from a developers point of view I think the 360 is better for development as we have the extra 2 cores that the CPU has and the better memory bandwidth. Not to mention the better SDK and support from MS.

There are currently great games on both platforms. That a manufacturer of cross-platform games has come out and said what many have contended for a long time is telling.

The ability to have additional horsepower to run software is important, and will provide better games. The ability to have the equivalent of more than 5 DVDs on one BR is important to scale and textures — those things that make games immersive. Consumers do not want to have to switch through 5 DVDs to play just one game, and developers don’t want to have to go through the hassle of figuring out which bits fit on which discs.

Sony needs to work on improving their development environment to make this excess capability easily available to developers. Microsoft has a clear edge in the ease of programming department.

Microsoft needs to look at upgrading the XBox line to again leapfrog the PS line. They need to seriously look at including BR and a hard drive as standard across the line this time, so that developers have a consistent target to code to. (And to those who say “but you can d/l games!”, I say I’ve got 16 BR PS3 games in addition to my d/l’s — are you going to d/l 800+GB anytime soon? Is the farmer in N. Dakota or the family in the RV going x-country going to do that over a dialup line?)

It’s a continuing contest, a continuing back-and-forth — such is the nature of competition. I for one am glad we have competition.

Advantage: Sony. Now, can they capitalize on it before MS comes out with a platform that can compete?

apparently you have no clue what you’re talking about. do a little reading on the specs and cell processor, because he’s not “jus throwing a term out there.”

  • Adrian

Wow, way to express opinion as fact… ridonkulous.

Comments like this are written by people who don’t know how to read the source so spout crap about fanboys… even though they are obviously fanboys themselves.

    Does the irony escape you?

Source for your 5-6x faster Download? Or is that just something you made up on the spot?

  • paul

“the 360 download times are 5 to 6x faster then the PS3’s.

What a load of crap. Its mainly dependant on the download speed of the consumers internet connection. V small factors such as amount of servers and their load have a little bearing.

I expect you are talking about the DVD drive in the xbox vs the blu ray in the PS3.

Well the dvd drive is quicker by 5% at the edge of the disc only. Slower at the rest.

Blu ray uses CLV (constant linear velocity) meaning speed of reading from the disc (not spinning speed) is the same regardless of where the data is on the disc.

    Hello paul , from paul.

You are correct in assuming code can be optimised. However, if the developers are already using very optimised code to being with (ie using the SDK correctly) then little can be done.

Cell is a much much faster processor than the Xenon in the 360. Fact.

However, not much optimisations have been done for that as its a new way to program and the developers have been stuggling. Sonys SDKs didn’t use to be as good as MS – however recent games (ie Killzone2) suggest they have got better.

sorry man , not even close, 360 has a tri core, 3×3.2, the ps3 has a total of 8 x 3.2 in which they are not even using one of the processors yet, the ps3 has more memory and a faster graphics card, 360 @ 500 ps3 @ 550, not to menction many other apps that are better for gaming, if you would like i can email you the stats from microsoft and sony, the ps3 is much more powerful, i have a 360 and ps3 like them both, but it is what it is, also ahve developers in the family who develop for just 360 , ps3 and wii, i would love to be able to say what they have told be about the ps3 being superior but i cant, you are seeing this start to happen now and will see it more this year, that is why microsoft wants to bring a new system soon

  • http://google.com Billy

man i just dont get 360 fans but i must say that i somewhat respect them for standing by there system even if they see that the playstation 3 is clearly better. multi platform games don’t mean jack its the exclusives that counts and this is where the playstation 3 kills the 360 just look at god of war 3, killzone 2 and uncharted 2 oh yeah throw mgs4 in there to nothing on 360 is even close to these games only gears 2 is even in the conversation and that as good as the 360 gets. i own a playstation 3 but i had a 360 for a whole year and i have to say the playstation 3 is superior but 360 fans are going to keep their bitter arguments going
