SilverPac SilverFrame: More than a photo frame

Some amazing new products have been announced at COMPUTEX Taipei 2009, one of which is the SilverPac SilverFrame, and we have to say that it is more than just a photo frame. The new gadget has a number of features; this includes Microsoft Windows Embedded 6.0, which allows you to use Windows SideShow as well as a number of other tools.

The new digital photo frame has a 10.1-inch touchscreen with built-in Wi-Fi. The coolest feature has to be the Windows SideShow, this is what makes the SilverPac SilverFrame stand out from other digital photo frames on the market, which Digital Picture Frame Reviews explains more about.

The first thing that the website talks about is how you are able to connect to a wireless network, and how the Windows Media Player gadget allows you to browse your music and video files and play them on the photo frame. There is also a feature that will allow you to send an email direct from the SilverPac SilverFrame. Read the full review from our source link within this article.

Is it “more than a picture frame” or is it snuffing out the digital frame’s true purpose?

Are the engineers that designed this thinking that just because it has a video screen it needs to be stuffed full of a lot of gadgetry?

At what point do a manufacture stuff a frame so full that it no longer becomes a digital frame and becomes something else?

I can not help but think of 2 famous principals of GOOD design.

    “LESS IS MORE”
    “FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION”

I am not sure this “gadget” adheres to these basic design principals… especially if they really want to call this a digital picture frame.

It looks like a great device to me.

I don’t want a PC in my bedroom, but I would like to have an alarm clock that can display photos of my kids, play MP3s from my home network, stream news or radio from the internet. An FM/AM tuner would be nice too because I do still listen to radio. I hope it has a RCA jack output so I can feed it to my ceiling speakers.

Try finding anything that can come close to that today. As a design philosophy “less is more” ends up meaning a whole lot of stacked components if what you really want is a well-packaged “more”. The idea is to meet a need. I think this does.
