Project Natal and PS3 Motion: merits and criticism of new tech

Following on from our earlier post, we have more feedback now on Project Natal and the PS3′s Motion Controller, both of which were showcased at this year’s E3 event. An article we have found discusses the pros and cons of both devices.

The article comes courtesy of Kokugamer, who have explained both devices in detail. They start discussing Microsoft’s Project Natal first, stating that the videos shown were amazing and highly impressive. However, the author of the article remains ‘dubious’ on the technology, stating that only tech demos were shown of Project Natal and not enough ‘live’ proof, that the technology will work as stated in all of the videos.

Then comes their opinions on Sony’s Motion Controller. While the technology didn’t seem as impressive as Project Natal, the main difference here was that Sony demonstrated all the new technology live, unlike Project Natal.

One potential issue with Sony’s Motion Controller is the price. It looks as if you will need to buy an Eye Toy along with two of these Motion Controllers. Given Sony’s reputation for starting with extremely high prices, this could turn out to be a problem for many gamers.

I never expected it to be cheap anyway… it just sucks that you have to buy a lot of peripherals. Can’t they just make one thing for all?

Personally, I think that the PS3 Motion system will be much more successful than Project Natal. The reason I believe it will, is that some things are simply not possible without buttons. Unless the camera for Project Natal is able to pick out a very subtle movement such as moving your finger to pull the trigger on a gun (which I highly doubt it is), then Project Natal will have no chance at being effectively used on a FPS or similar type game.
