GM Plant Closings could help transmission plant outside Baltimore
By: Peter Chubb | June 2, 2009
Plants and dealerships have all been worried that they could appear on the new list from General Motors, but thankfully, a transmission plant outside Baltimore has been spared. GM had already announced a huge number of plant closures, but yesterday as the automaker filed for federal bankruptcy protection, they announced a new round of plant and dealer closures.
General Motors said that they would close 12 plants, this is in addition to the previous two that was announced, they will also idle another three by the end of 2011. Plants affected were assembly plant in Wilmington, Del and the powertrain parts facility in Fredericksburg, Va. Powertrain’s transmission factory in White Marsh was spared the same fate.
The Daily Record reports that GM spokesman, John Raut said that the White Marsh plant would benefit from the other plant closures, as they will pick up the production of torque converter clutch plates, which the Fredericksburg plant used to produce. The White Marsh plant currently employees 250 workers.
