Xbox 360 and Blu-ray: Revisited

We have found another Xbox 360 and Blu-ray article for you to read now, as the debate continues as to whether Microsoft will choose to include the Blu-Ray disc format on the next Xbox 720 console.

In this article from Xboxist, they talk about how Blu-Ray has emerged as the number one and most popular choie for delivering HD content, following the demise of the HD-DVD format. Then they of course, mention the Playstation 3 and talk about Blu-Ray being a success on the console, thanks to it’s 50GB storage space.

What are your opinions on the storage format for the next Xbox console? What would you like to see? We have already discussed this topic in a similar story which highlights the possibility of using Holographic Optical Media.

    Blu-ray?

It’s not needed and it is IMO over-rated.

As a game storage device Xbox doesn’t need it, like PCs Xbox can use quality compression and load to it’s HDD.
For instance Resident Evil 5 is 6gb on Xbox and 13gb on PS3 (and many reviewers rate the Xbox version the better one).

If necessary a couple of reliable & inexpensive 8.5gb DVD9s will more than suffice.

Besides, anyone with a decent Blu-ray stand-alone is not going to want to see a chunk of cash used up on an unneeded and unwanted video format, Blu-ray drives are still expensive.

Microsoft is very likely to go their own way with the next Xbox.
I do expect them to use a big optical storage disk (because too much of the world will not quite be ready for digital distribution even in 2 or 3yrs) but it won’t be Blu-ray.

My bet is that they will go with what they already part-own (important for royalty & licencing fees etc etc) and know.
    51gb TL HD DVD disks.
They are still being worked on - as periodic DVD Forum reports show.
    It seems obvious why.
It gives Microsoft an obvious unique & relatively secure media all of their own.

Hell will freeze over before Microsoft make any use of Blu-ray (other than as a customer specifiable PC option).

don’t be such a fanboy, yes the xbox needs blu-ray, in the near future, people will only buy hd tv’s and the movies will all come out on blu-ray, wouldn’t it be great if you buy the next xbox, you will also can play movies on it. If they do not, and sony will do it, than that’s a +1 for the japanese.
