GM bankruptcy and your warranty

We reported in an earlier post that General Motors have now filed for bankruptcy, but millions of GM consumers are now asking what will happen to their warranty. This is certainly a good question, one that USA Today has been taking a close look at.

For those consumers who have been asking if their warranty will still be honored, the simple answer is yes, this includes extended warranties as well. The reason for this is that GM has the federal government standing behind them, who have also reassured General Motors and Chrysler owners that they have nothing to worry about.

Consumers are also asking about their GMAC car loan, all you need to do is keep making your payments as normal. For those who have been asking if they will get a better deal now that GM have filed for bankruptcy, there will now be some sweet deals around very soon, so best to hold off for a while.

  1. David Fenn says:

GM might be forced to stand behind their warranties, however, the vendors who supply parts to GM are not.

My 2008 Chevy 3500 with Duramax diesel (36,000 miles), has been at a Tacoma, WA, Chevy dealer for 3 1/2 weeks. The dealer and GM can’t tell me when the vendor will ship the part. For now, I can’t drive the truck and more importantly, can’t pull my 5th wheel trailer anywhere. That normally wouldn’t be an issue, however our family “full times” in our RV and we are “parked” for awhile here in the Tacoma area.

The GM Service Rep told me that my part has been ordered, however “it is not available at this time from the vendor”. The dealer has given me a 1/2 ton truck to use at no cost, but I cannot accept GM just telling me to “stand by and wait”. That is not a way to operate a business.

I’m done with GM. Once I get my truck back, it will be traded in on a Ford or Dodge.
