Xbox 720 vs PS3’s Blu-ray

An interesting article has surfaced on the possibilities that Microsoft have in terms of storage capacity relating to their Xbox 720 console. A recent study has found that it might be possible to fit 12TB of data on a single DVD disc.

Sounds hard to believe I know, but the scientists are still exploring this possibility and might of found a breakthrough. Click here to read more on this. But anyway, an article over at GamePlayer has suggested that Microsoft could be (and maybe should be) willing to try out this new method for the Xbox 720.

The article points out the fact that 12TB of storage would be 240 times the capacity of Blu-ray, so imagine the possibilities if this turns out to be true.

How would Sony and their Blu-Ray format compete with that kind of storage capabilities? It will be interesting to see what the storage options for the Xbox 720 will be.

Take a look at the full article and also the ‘new DVD technology’ we mentioned above. We would like to know your thoughts on this.

bluray is called that because it uses blue lasers instead of red. this new tech listed above uses all sorts of colors. i.e more than just red.

standard dvd’s won’t be able to use it because their red diaodes won’t be able to read it.

basically what they’re saying is these aren’t dvd’s as the xbox uses them currently, a whole new tech needs to be built. at a cost of billions of dollars, will be substantially more expensive than bluray’s development costs due to the fact the readers / writers need to cater for 5 dimensions vs. 3 like dvd and bluray do currently.
componenets will cost more to, right from the players through to the disks themsevles.

xbox720 will never use it. maybe the one after that.. but I doubt that streaming will be the delivery method of choice.

verdict, stupid article, and I shouldn’t have bothered commenting on it.

sorry i don’t mean to sound rude but part of what your saying is rubbish. It may cost more to develop then blu-ray and be more expensive but weren’t dvds more expensive then videos but the price came down and the advantages outweigh the price. the only reason they wouldn’t use it is if there wasn’t already hype surrounding it or the technology isn’t ready not because of the price.

The real reason this will not happen is because… WTF do you need 12TB of storage on an optical drive for?

Lets be honest blue-ray will most likely be the last commercially viable optical drive used because of the of the advancements in flash memory physical drives. And more importantly the increasing penetration of broadband (as well as increasing speed)

If Blue-ray can comfortably hold 1080i, and we are quickly moving toward broadband systems that can comfortably stream 1080i what is the need for another optical medium.

By the time this technology is ready everything will be done through “the cloud” and we will have no need for optical drive.

        my 2 cents

The researchers are still working out the speed at which the discs can be written on, and say that commercial production is at least five years off.

Used in the 720? Err, no, not a chance. Unless Microsoft want to wait at least 5 years for the tech to evolve fully.

I think that hell freezing over is more likely to happen than Microsoft being able to have this in the Xbox720 at an affordable cost for how fast they like to push stuff out.

The thing is…There is discs being developed based on the Blu-Ray technology, that will increase the storage capacity, while still working on existing blu-ray drives. So, people won’t have to buy all new hardware. Whereas with this new “dvd” technology, everybody would have to buy all new hardware.

this is why you hack your systems…you dont have to buy ur games…
