New iPhone 3.0 Applications in 2009 and Palm Pre development

Smartphones are like computers, great software sells hardware. We will have to see if this is the case with the Palm Pre when it is released on June 6. Applications normally help to sell phones, so the lack of apps on the Pre could prove to be a nightmare. Things will be different with the new iPhone 3.0 when it will be released some time in 2009.

The new iPhone is expected to run on the new iPhone 3.0 OS; PC World believes that this could be just a few days after the launch of the Palm Pre. The new handset that is heading off to Sprint certainly has a long hill to climb when it comes to application, unlike the new iPhone. It seems that developers are already building new apps for the latest Apple smartphone.

Palm has a bad history in many circles, and this could prove to be bad news for Palm as developers could be slow to support the Pre. If you was a developer, the easy money would be to develop apps for the iPhone, the rest are just playing catch up, a race that they just cannot win.

What would you choose, the Palm Pre or the new Apple iPhone?

I think most smartphone producers are going to be playing catch-up for at least the next 2 years, all the while Apple is going to be coming out with the next big thing. There’s a reason their market share just keeps growing.

I used to be a die-hard pc fan, but after owning a MacBook Pro & an iPhone - I can safely say I’ll never go back. Unfortunately I still have to deal with those PC’s and other MS stuff because I’m also into security. Most security experts use a Mac or some flavor of linux to perform their duties. The ONLY thing they end up using a PC for is to type up the report to management about how vulnerable they are.

What is there to win when it comes to applications? Of the multitude of applications that the iPhone touts, how many are more than frivolous eye candy, occupying someone’s need to say they came up with them or have it consuming desktop space on the phone to justify it’s worthiness to them. However unused they may be. Those of us that actually use a smart phone in any kind of useful, productive manner look at these apps and dismiss them for the real estate they occupy on the phones’ resources. I truly wonder who writes these diatribes; maybe they should step out of the their box and consider those of us that want an alternate product that doesn’t yet fit the mold the iPhone has broken (shatterd) and look beyond the fences of its limitations and conformity as well. I would be the first to say I have always admired the iPhone and it’s element but I, like obviously others, look to my personal needs and say there are options yet that meet them that the iPhone is not capable. It is all subjective; when I read these “blerbs” I can’t help to think of who the entity is, that wrote them, and what their actual agenda is. If you’re objective is to deter me from other products, you’ve inspired me otherwise.

why do u always say palm pre is behind in apps? the pre will run an palm os simulator so we can run all of our old apps right out the gate. there are at least 30,000 available apps so why r they behind?

You’re right! A company (MotionApps) has developed an app that will run classic apps on the Pre. But of course, it’s not included in the stock rom, and will set you back almost as much as the phone itself. I can’t track it down immediately but I saw a video of Classic being demoed and they said something about $150….

Im just about to give up on the iphone. I think the way the iphone handles doc files is ridiculous. Cant they just create a doc repository on the phone and allow all programs to access it. As a business device the iphone sucks!
