PS3 Owners: Would you pay PSN subscription fee?

PS3 Owners: Would you pay PSN subscription fee?

By: Alan Ng | May 20, 2009 | 20 Comments

There has been talk of Sony possibly introducing a subscription fee for their Playstation Network. The fee won’t affect online play, but instead the idea of giving you access to a number of PSN titles each month.

The news comes from Tawkn, after they spotted this questionnaire from Sony, asking users for their views on the possible service. The questionnaire seems to relate to the PSP quite a lot, but it’s pretty certain that the move would happen on the PS3 and then games paid for would be playable on the PSP.

How would you feel about a PSN rental service from Sony? It looks like Sony are not going to introduce any charges for online play, so we think this is an idea that looks promising. The move could also be further evidence that Sony are thinking of bringing the UMD format to a halt, with the next PSP hardware model being disc-less, meaning all games would be available on the PSN.

    Think its a bloody good idea, Sony and game developers really got shafted with the old PSP range and its easily hackable interface, its a brilliant device and even better with Custom Firmware and homebrew apps (especially if you have the original Jap fat psp).

    Sony need to make the new PSP more open to application creation for it, like the iPhone or similar device where you can get and download all kinds of fun and useful apps for it, I don’t think entirely scrapping UMD is clever, but introducing a large digital side to it would be a fantastic idea, I would definately pay a subscription fee if it was a decent price and enables access to decent content and features.

    No way. PSN is like 99% of Xbox Live these days, without the charges, and with generally higher quality content (well same amount of good content, but with none of the piles of crap clogging up XBLIve).

    There is no way Sony would introduce charges on PSN. They might offer additional services (like Quore) core additional cost, but what you get today will always be free.

    @Mak

    The subscription fee wouldn’t be a replacement of what we currently have now, that will always be free unlike Xbox Live, the subsciption would be to allow you to download content for free, kind of like software assurance in a strange sense ^^ Aswell as allowing you access to other content and features.

    I personally believe it would be a great idea. As long as it doesnt cut into the online play and you can still enter the PSN store and get demos and videos. I think it great because the user can have a choice to pay or not and if you pay, you can get an amount of PSN titles a month. Then more people will have games from PSN. I also hope to see more playstation cards as i dont have a credit card and i think most people do not feel safe using it. I also hope u get free DLC so i can finally have the Kllzone DLC map packs

    Are you out of your mind psn does not even have half the content of live. I own both consoles, now if you are talking about a psn Japan account then I would say they are even.

  • Lincoln

    that’s the worst idea I have ever heard….there’s no way i would pay for it! I have to get my father to pay for like random $2.00 things there and he gets SO pissed even when i pay for that. Also, it’s the reason I got a PS3….NO FEES. KEEP IT REAL!!!!

  • spatuluk

    The questionnaire is about the potential of renting games via the store, not making the whole network subscription based – they’re two entirely different concepts!!

  • RandyChimp

    Subscription fee is what’s putting me off the 360. I don’t think it’s fair that you pay a high price for a machine and then you have to pay extra to go online when you’re already paying for internet on the PC. Pfft. Don’t do it sony!

  • Enforcer

    Sony won’t take anything away, so what we enjoy for free on PSN (and what others have to pay for), will always be free. I have no problems with additional services being chargeable, as Sony are a company and have to make money, if it means it continues to subsidize my free PSN, then thats fine by me.

    The only real losers are Xbox owners, getting boned £40 a year for a service that is now equally as good on PS3 (and in some ways better). Of course they will never admit there is little difference, and Microsoft are happy to let the story continue that they have some vastly superior service that warrants the price of a full game EVERY year…

    Admit what, that you are delusional live has 10 times the content as Euro and US psn. Other than Pixel Junk what else do you have, 10-15 psone titles. Don’t even try throwing Home in there its useless. I got on there once waited to bowl and that is it, although I do like the bubble machine. So what else does the psn have? I will admit I do not have a Euro account on live so if the content does suck then I am sorry. The content in the US is great for live and is far more extensive than the psn in all regions except Japan.

    @sinn1

    I think you are the one who is delusional, are you sure you really own both consoles? or do you just immagine that you own both consoles?

    you say that Pixel Junk is about the only game on the PSN, I don’t think you could possibly be any more wrong, Unlike Live the PSN offers FULL HD complete game downloads, has piles of other smaller games like well, Pixel Junk now that you mention it, has previous classics and psp games, plus content for the majority, Almost every Thursday a new game is released into the store, sometimes multiple games. Plus the addition of Home which over the last month has taken massive jumps, and over the next months even more, and thats just SCEE, SCEA has multiple times that content.

    Now don’t get me wrong, I think the Xbox 360 is a good system with plenty of Microsoft games that are great for it, it does have a decent system behind it, but trying to battle out this price thing is stupid, lets say you buy an xbox Elite console for £220 (its the closest you can get to the ps3 in the xbox range), then you get a wireless adapter for around £40, and then you get 3 years worth of Live GOLD membership for 3 coins under £120 (3 years because thats the length of the Xbox warranty thanks to law suits bought against Microsoft for their unreliable unit). Now thats £380 without even downloading a single piece of premium content from Live or purchasing any games. For that price you can pick up a PS3 which has a blu-ray drive, free PSN, built in wireless and all the usual stuff plus a free game, plus you can add in a 3 year warranty like the xbox’s and still come in at £30 the cost of the xbox setup, now that cash could be spent on a new game, or a whole bunch of games in the PSN Store. Go figure.

    I own a 360 and fortunately I get all my hardware and software for free so it would seem pointless me not having one when I get it for free (including live subscription), if it wasn’t for that I can’t see why I would spend money on one, I mean sure you can pick up the base unit with no frills, no wireless, no HDD etc for 125 quid, but your gonna have to start spending money on it soon, nobody can stick with a base unit for long.

    @everybody else

    Everything you currently get on the PSN would still be free, nothing would change, except if you wanted you would be able to get a subscription which would open up some extra content for you, plus allow you to download x amount of games each month, its just additional, all the usual stuff would be free.

  • RandyChimp

    you seem to know quite a bit about the PSN. Im assuming you only own a 360, since you are defending it like it was your child. Other than the crap you read on news sites about it, how would you know what was on the PSN, Europe or US? If you have a ps3, Im sorry, but seriously, wheres the point in buying it if you’re going to attack its quality and its features on a review site?

  • Bridger

    You didn’t actually read the article did you?

  • sinn1

    You claim to own one but don’t know its features, very sad. I have a ps3 and I have a psn account in all three regions. I own all game systems, I am a true gamer. I get tired of ps3 only owners like yourself that don’t know what you are talking about. I only said that live was better than the psn with its content, I said nothing about the ps3′s features. I attacked it because until it does become better or as good as live then its not worth the cash. The ps3 in itself is a nice console with lots of bells and whistles. The hdmi is better`on the ps3 and the blue ray player is great. I love Killzone, I just wish that there was more communication. Another thing cool guy I did not even say the word xbox , you did. So go on the psn and make a Japanese account and see what I am talking about. Thats what I want my psn experience to be like.

  • sinn1

    RandyChimp are you serious it is extremely easy to make a Japanese account and Euro on the psn. I own all game systems because I am a true gamer. I also said nothing about the ps3′s features, nor did I even mention the word xbox or 360. Nice try though, I think the ps3 is an excellent console with good content. I love Killzone 2 it has some of the best graphics I have seen ever. I also like the blue ray player. The reason I post an attack on quality as you put it, is because I would not pay for psn. I will pay, and continue to pay for live because it is better in every way. So in conclusion it is not my fault you have no idea how to use your console, its your own stupidity.

    @sinn1

    Who was that response actually aimed at?

    P.S- You keep contradicting yourself ^^

  • Fabolous643

    No,Sony can’t let us pay to play because they’ve got like over 3 million users and I don’t want it to be like it’s an XBOX 360 where you have to pay. I wouldn’t even pay a cent for 10 secs.

  • tevin

    you filled your argument for the 360 with opinions and nothing else. unlike you i enjoy home a lot and log on nearly everyday so Yes you can “throw in home”. Also there are over 7 million people playing HOME so why not included that as a better experience than XBL What makes you so sure that XBL have 10x the content where is your stats making your point. Also dont try to blast the ps3 for supporting the psone when MS stopped ALL support to the xbox. You have no clue of the true extent of the content on psn especially in Japan. And to blast your opinion one more time XBL is downgraded in every region outside the US. You state that even though you do not have a Europe XBL account you still state that XBL is “far more extensive than the psn in all regions except Japan.” To anyone who is not a Fanboy of any system your argument is useless, basis, and ill informed.

  • tevin

    You say that XBL is better than PSN in every way. You sir are an idiot. That statement is 100% false even to a basis fanboy like you. Not saying you are a complete fanboy just basis toward your 360. For starters XBL is not better than PSN in every way because it charges. Therefore PSN is better than XBL in price and that is just one of many.

  • Seraph

    i don’t think anyone in their right mind would pay a fee for PSN. it’s why im so harcore ps3 when it come to extreme fanboism :) fee based psn is a bad move cause i dont want to pay for it… but if they are talking about rental subscriptions… that’s not a bad idea. and as some pointed out, if it subsidizes the free stuff we get right now i dont see it as a bad thing. just don’t screw us like microsoft screws their users:

    Pay all that f’n money for a system, then pay for internet… then have to pay to play online??? does that f’n seem right to you? hell no.
