WHEN is SONY going to release a MAJOR update to play the different AVI/Mpeg files that are on the market today.

Difficult to imagine that one of the largest corporations in IT cannot make a CODEC for the PS3 to play our files…

No problem with my ps3 . But it pisses me off how they do little updates which dont do anything, we want something big sony!! Like in game private gat and voice messaging!!

Its ridiculous. The firmware update team have the ability to make the PS3 a very powerful piece of kit. Imagine if you could select a friend from your list press X and it would call them, even if they are playing. The voice chat is too complicated at the moment. Its not worth the hassle. If you could make quick calls I wouldnt be using my phone half as much to meet up with friends. People in your friends list should be able to look through your photos. View profile should be secondary to sending messages too. Pressing X on the persons name shouldn’t bring up a slow loading profile that is completely useless information. The chat room was a step in the right direction. But I cant use it that much because it slows down online play. It should be better located in the menu because it can be hard to go in and out of if someone is also sending private messages. Is there an official forum that people can voice their opinions on what they’d like in the next update?

i feel the same way you do man… hurry up and do a MAJOR update so we can play all videos that are out.

I hate it how you morons that post things like “the little updates aren’t important.”
The little updates are a LOT more important than the big ones.
Without things you call ‘minor updates’ Ps3 software would pretty much suck, without small patches, some major updates wouldn’t be
available or wouldn’t run right, and it wouldn’t be as secure.
Any update is a step to making the Ps3 better… I’m sure bigger ones will come later.

I think if anything, an instant messanger (for yahoo, hotmail, AIM, etc…) should be installed along with a more recent Java and Flash player.
It takes time though…

I just wanna be able to play some damn music during actual gameplay. If my eight year old PC can handle playing music while playing DMC4, and the 360 can play music during game play…why cant the PS3, with all its “processing power” do the same?

My update worked fine – no issues (Australian 80GB PAL version)

Don’t understand the complaints about file formats – all my XVIDs and DVIX work fine – only MKV playback doesn’t work.

It is annoying trying to chat to friends online – if a friend is online I wanna be able to talk to him and tell him to join me for a round of Killzone

IT BROKE MY PS3 TO! SOMEONE HELP!!! after i downloaded the update, my ps3 won’t load any disc’s! no games, dvd’s, blu-ray’s, nothing! why the hell would sony release such a useless update! now i can’t play call of duty!!!!!!!!! WTF!

Everything freezes now. I can’t reply to messages or load multiplayer games.

You can play with your own music on some games, it depends on whether the developer makes a patch… However the only one I can play with my own music is Skate 2 (I only have 4 games though). You can also play songs off your pc via wireless connection.

I still cant CHAT out side of chat room (use the ps3 for anything else while chatting)?

Most of the time I use my browser it gives blank pages.

Im still waiting for some basic functionality on my PS3.

It broke mine too…mine won’t read any disc I put in it and the bitch from sony told me that hers works fine and she doesn’t know where I’m getting my information from when I told her other people had the same problem but that I’m wrong so if I want them to fix it they’ll charge $150. Fuck Sony!

Nothing happened to mine or any of my friends’ Playstations (11 of them, counting mine) nor my cousin (so 12) plus everyone on my friend list (around 20 people). So…that’s 40 systems that are perfectly fine, and they’re all from different places around the world. I just think you guys were doin somethin illegal with your systems and that update booked your cheating asses. if downloading an update is illegal then thats what i did my system has never been tampered with and had only light use. Just cos u have been lucky and updated (as i have every time til now) without hitch doesn,t mean myself, and other people on here, who now have basically a web browser can,t voice our opinion that this 2.76 update has stopped our machines reading discs.I do own a 360 which has broken down twice but at least microsoft repaired it free of charge cos they acknowledge it was there fault it happened in the first place.

believe me mate its no joke when they force an update on you then it kills ur system and they want me to pay to have it repaired.Sony are trying to tell me its not happened to anyone else, which looking round on the forums is a lie, maybe its the type of laser we have or some hardware specific to our machines i dunno but i,m certain this updates killing ps3s

It doesn’t recognize BR games anymore.
BEfore fixing this pb (i think it’s only software issue) i’ve foud a solution to be able to play games.
Insert you DVD br game, launch a demo downloaded from de the ps network. when the demo is loaded, press the middle button of you pad, go back to the dashboard and now, oh surprise, your game is recognized and you can now launch it.
That just proves that it is a software issue.
Hope it’s gonna work for those who have the same problem than me.
Im calling the hotline today to get more info.

yep tried everything been on the phone to sony again and they say its gonna cost me 99 pound to have it sorted theres no issues with update 2.76.my ps3 is a year and a half old i,m proper sick

Like I said before, my system along with about 30 others I know of are perfectly fine, so this update isn’t killing PS3s in the hopes of making money from repairs.

ever since I installed this update, my PS3 has locked up 4 times and I’ve probably played it for about 5 hours since I ran the update

2.60 killed my PS3, had to buy a new 80GB PS3, had no problems with updates so far, hearing that 2.76 kills ps3, has put me off updating!

Same thing happened to me (60GB PAL) after downloading the new update. Have done a full reformat, twice for good measure, still no good. When I check the HDD from the repairs screen, it says it has a corrupted hard drive, so I ask it to fix, it does but still no joy.

I have a 60Gb PS3 that is over a year old now. I have ran every update available and have never had a problem with it. Ran this update and no problem. If a system update which is I believe mandatory for online play breaks your ps3 then Sony are liable and would have to fix or replace your ps3. However I find it very difficult to believe that a software update would in fact damage your ps3 hardware. Perhaps a file was corrupt or whatever but surely a system format and reinstall would fix that. If I had a £1 for every time windows broke and I had to reinstall windows to get it working properly again then I would be richer than Bill Gates. However everytime the software broke my pc or laptops hardware was never damaged. The same applies.

yeah that may be true but its seems strange that 6 people on here and many others on other forums updated and bam no discs are picked up. If a lasers on its way out it usually shows some signs of going(skipping or sticking during gameplay) mine was perfect as ive only really used it 6 months of owning it.It may be coincidence but seems strange and i,ve updated all updates since ive owned it and sony told me that another update did cause machines to fail so i still think its possible its this update.A dvd drive has drivers and if they are affected the drive won,t work.Yes a format will clear the hard drive but does not get rid of updates

2.76 broke my system (60gb) I am on the internet with it right now but if i do a connection test or sign into the network or even do an update check the system freezes. otherwise it works fine its only when the system interacts with the playstation network in ANY WAY even send a score through the network freezes the darn thing. sony just told me to send it in. HAAA i know its not broken. the 1st minute after i downloaded it i got kicked from the network an since have not be able to sign in w/o it freezing .

Did the update, was playing Guitar Hero World Tour and locked up twice, hard freeze… thanks Sony, you tard nuggets!

2.76 killed my playstation as well. No discs can be read now. Can’t play nothing. Everybody whos says we are lieing , eat a dirty aids dick and die. I have no reason to make shit up. Sony ****** up some systems cause they lost mad money this year in stocks and tech. So why not *** the ps3 owners to buy more. *******. This new update hosed my system. I had connected PS3 to my NAS box as a media server, it used to play all my ripped avi and mpeg files, movies just fine before the upgrade. Now it shows as unsupported format. WTF????

I thought updates were pushed out to make the system better. I am pissed. Now i need to find a different way to stream or rollback the latest update (which i can’t.). ASS HAT!!!

This update messed up my 40gb playstation as well. I was playing the Infamous demo when it froze, i turned it off then on. Since then it cant play ps3 games. However, it plays CDs, DVDs perfectly fine.

How can a system in which all the software, hardware, etc have all the things you guys want AND MORE, AND sony has copied some of, been created in 2003-2004(yes im talking about 360), and the playstation 3 which has been in works since before ps2, still been unable to do these things?

However i have ps3 also and wish my ps3 would work like my xbox music/video/messaging/update/online wise. Only thing i see sony doing good in is getting the ps3 to be best for videos after they finally master their codec issues, and youtube soon works smoothly on it(will help for people who DONT want to afford buying a computer).

No response from Sony. Over 1000 people with the same issues and Sony denies everything. Wants everybody to pay $150 to fix. 2.76 firmware has caused systems to lock out blu-ray drivers. Causing DVD, CD’s and Blu-rays not to play or reading with older first gen-playstations, Basically the ones that have the backwards computability hardwired. Newer systems are having all types of weird online and freezing issues and even the no disc errors. Sorry to tell everyone. If your Ps3 is not playing any disks or even some…… Theirs no fix you can do. Only if your Blu-ray lens is burnt. But thats not our problem Our problem is firmware 2.76. IDK people.And for the fan boys that might attack me saying how you know the lens is not burnt… Well I checked with my a friend of mine, who basically has a lab that can rebuild a lens from scratch. no bull so…. like I stated before, Fuck Sony with a dirty AIDS dick. 100% spot on. I have tried every thing. I even took my HDD out and put it in my mates PS3, did the update and the HDD worked fine and played disks, put the HDD back in mine to see if it would work, but as the code for the OS is in the flash memory and not the HDD (so I am told) it still boots using the dirty system and then tells me that the HDD is corrupt, even though it will work in another PS3. Nice try Sony, now fix it.

2.76 FW broke my ps3. Since the day of update and flawless completion of the download, my system does not read any form of media disks. No its not the blu-ray lens. I had it checked. Actually I had it checked for all the fan boys that stated to me that firmware can’t disable your blu-ray drive. WOW were all those idiots wrong. Well I expected that, figure half the people on the ps3 forums are like 12 and up. To everybody with this problem, your ps3 not reading disks after 2.76, all I can say is wait to see if the new update will fix your system. DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT pay Sony 150 dollars to fix unless your a jackass that likes to waste money or rich and money doesn’t matter. Personally I am both, but one thing I hate the most is being lied to and cheated out of money. Oh and by the way I have been able to simulate the problem with 4 other ps3’s. From my testing I believe that 2.76 was created to get rid of 1st gen ps3’s that had Backwards compatibility hardwired into them. Now being that I am a lead designer for APPLE, I can say that my findings are more then just a hypothesis.Unfortunately there is no way for me to fix this problem cause of the PS3’s horrible internal design. Wow I thought PC’s were made like shit…..I was wrong. Damn I wish everything worked as well as my APPLE COMPUTERS……. SOny, stop being cheap and pay people to do your testing.

Well I’m gonna stick with the firmware I already have in my system which is the 2.60 firmware which has been wonderful =)

I have also heard some PS3 games have the firmware built into them its not a requirement that developers have to do that. But this saves people that hassle of having to down load the firmware off Sony site specially if you have dial up because it could take 7hrs to down load lol ouch

After the update It would only play sound from a DVD and now it is not even playing the disc. It won’t even turn off unless unplugged.

I fixed it in safe mode, with option 3.

Fried my ps3 as well. I had to restore it because nothing else worked. It is fine now, but all 300 gigs of stuff I had saved is gone. Fxxking bastards.

This crappy update broke my ps3 too , i bought skate 2 , installed the update , played for 10 minutes , and then it froze and my ps3 cant read any disc anymore :’(

My 80 GB ps3 did fine downloading it but i also want to play music while playing some games it kinda sucks that the Xbox360 can do that stuff but the ps3 cant

the reason your ps3s are faulting is because of the model not the firmware. i have 120 slim and it worked fine
