E3 2009: Next PS3 firmware update and new feature

There have been talks about a possible Sony PS3 firmware update during the upcoming E3 event. The source comes from a dutch gaming site who say that the new firmware update will bring with it a brand new feature.

As Playstation Lifestyle points out, it’s unsure as to the reliability of the source. The dutch website in question is PS3-Sense who have stated that their sources are reliable.

However, if the story does indeed turn out to be true, then it’s set to be a exciting E3 event for PS3 owners. Sony usually save their big announcements untill E3 so maybe we will see a new firmware.

The cross-game voice chat debate is re-opened for discussion guys. Do you think Sony will bring a new firmware to E3?

i can’t see why not, we are about due for the free music/video streaming service though so it could be an firmware update that includes that. not fussed over cross game chat, nothing could be worse than experiencing some tense in game moment and having a knob shouting down the mic like a gibbering monkey. no tah.

I WANT MY PLAYTV!… in the u.s.-and cross game voice chat and, return bacwards compatibility AND, better use of ps eye (where’s eye pet?) AND, better usage motion sensing abilities avail since day 1..AND lastly update the browser! as is, it wins compared to netflix on 360(vs hulu, youtube etc.) why not finish the job and add to validation of current pricing? …I WANT MY PLAYTV!

<<has the backwards compatible ps3. I love it.

Five things I would like to see

1.I hope they change the firmware to let you multitask more, and listen to your own music while playing a game. Buy it from Microsoft if you have to.

      2. Tournaments for money/a small fee or even better straight out gambling. add features, do your thing.

      3. Private tournaments for money, register through home, top 50 players or skill level based etc.

      4. A home that doesn’t suck. With better interactive locations and games that involve your avatar. take a shots at the wii..just cuz

      5. Can play downloaded Sony movies (other than psp) on other portable Sony devices like the Sony Walkman.

  3. drag_racer says:

I hope part of it means the movie rental/purchase thing coming to Canada.

Oh and Bruce, I think that the backwards compatibility thing was partly hardware too, not just a software thing and they had to scrap it due to costs.

ps3 network is really annoying me, i’ll play a game for about an hour then i’ll be kicked of the net work due to a DNS error. after this i’m not able to sign in for the rest of that day. is it worth it? i rang playstation who blame my internet provider, i rang my internet provider who blame play station….. update this before the filmware. or you can keep the playstation and i’ll move 2 xbox!!!!!

    • CC says:

yeah DNS errors happen on my ps3 but not my PC… i hate it

    • Xav says:

      Hi,
If DNS errors occur, just restart your PS3, or restart your router, then it should work! :D

    • Shane says:

I read about people having this DNS error and I use my ps3 on the internet all the time and play games online. And for the 2 years i’ve had my ps3 i have never gotten this error. So, maybe it is in the routers or their internet providers. I’m using DSL at the top speed i can get and mine is fine. Maybe running too much on the internet (like on pc’s, messengers) at the same time would cause this… I dunno. I have 3 computers on my internet with messengers running and still have no problems… So, i doubt its the PS3.

    • Nick says:

I had DNS problems too, but then I got wireless phones that run on a 6.0 wireless frequency to replace my old ones that ran on a 2.4 frequency and then I have not had a problem since. Older wireless phones, as well as older wireless devices of any kind could interfere with your wireless internet connection for your PS3, make sure you have the latest in wireless technology for all of your devices to prevent interference.

  5. Luke says:

Get a cheap new router or something richard you can get then for about £15 now

  6. Duncan says:

Since cross-game voice chat is, essentially, a VoIP service, I doubt that Sony will get into that for free, when they could easily charge for it.

I’m in favor of Sony putting that in their pay-DLC, since I have no use for it and don’t want something that could be made an optional add-on bloating up my OS. Let the people who want it put their money where their mouths are.

What I’d prefer is for system updates to be background downloadable, and executable at system shut-down. I’m tired of getting a message telling me I need to do a system update when I want to play, and then having to wait 10-15 minutes for it to download and install. Let me play while my console gets updated.

For all that, though, I love that we get updates and improvements a few times a year.

  7. carl says:

i want to be able to listen to my media library while playn burnout seems to be the only game that duz it so far

    • Harry says:

i agree. you should be able to play YOUR music while in a game. by the way warhawk has this feature too ^^

  8. Peter says:

A CODEC fix for playing (at last…waiting for years) my AVI/MPEG/Xvid files…

come on Sony, give us the best mediaplayer in the world ;-)

  9. nathan says:

I have heard of the new update, and from what i hear its gonna blow the wii out of the water.

I heard the are making a new playstation remote somewhat to that of the wii. but better, meaning if you move closer, it can sense it, if you move backwards it can sense it. if you turn your hand it will sense it. I hope you understand what im getting at. We are basically combinining the XBOX and the Wii gaming system together with the playstation system. making it the best system out there. if it can do what the XBOX and the Wii can do, everyone should throw away their red ring of death systems and their non-HD having systems and get with the program.

  10. Foose says:

A couple big things i would like to see on the PS3

    1) How bout reading something other than FAT32 for storage of external hard drives. Would love to put 1080HD movies on external however can’t (without converting) because of the 4gb per file on FAT32.

    2) Better music sorting from internal/external sources. Or better multitasking of music files. In game etc…

    3) More reliable network. Im tired of DNS errors.

Could care less about cross game chat.

    • Brad says:

I agree I have both 360 & ps3 and its alot easier to navigate through massive amounts of music on 360 so surely sony can fix this
