Palm Pre and New iPhone Release: smartphone market bubbling
By: Peter Chubb | May 9, 2009 | Leave a CommentWe mentioned recently that BlackBerry Curve from RIM outsold the Apple iPhone in the first quarter of 2009, and this has shocked many in the industry. The Apple iPhone has been the top selling smartphone for the last two quarters. But is seems as if Apple is not worried, this is because the smartphone market is bubbling with excitement, as it is expected that a new iPhone is on the horizon, along with the much anticipate Palm Pre.
The top five best selling smartphones in the first quarter were in order of sales, Curve, iPhone, Storm, Pearl and T-Mobile’s G1. PC World said that NPD reports that the reason for strong Curve sales was due to a “buy-one-get-one-free” promotion by Verizon Wireless. That and the fact that four carriers support the Curve, while the iPhone is just tied to one, AT&T.
Although the industry is shocked, Apple is not worried, so they must know something that we do not, and we are hoping that it is a new iPhone handset. If and when a new iPhone is released it will easily beat the competition, but it could have a fight on its hands with the much-anticipated Palm Pre, which should be launched in early June.
