XP mode on Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 7 Release Candidate will allow the beta release version of the software to open many older Windows XP productivity applications, direct from their desktop running on Windows 7. However, it seems that select processors from AMD will not support Windows 7 “XP mode”, unlike Intel.
The Windows XP Mode stand-alone feature has been developed to help small businesses that still use Windows XP applications to move to Windows 7. Larger businesses will use Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization (MED-V) MED-V 2.0, this builds on top of Windows Virtual PC and providing a centralized management of Windows XP Mode.
An AMD spokeswoman told Cnet news on Wednesday that “All CPUs AMD is currently shipping, except Sempron, include AMD-V and therefore support XP mode.” AMD Opteron processors shipped by Rev forward do include AMD-V, so will also support XP Mode.
